Yea, you can go on a date with someone, and not be dating them, just go on a date with someone else...its called ebing single, you date everyone.

Couples "go out."

Dates are the time in which a couple does the "going" of the "out."

To say that if you go on more than one date with a person and are suddenly going steady is pretty rediculous. You need to think of yourself as taken, so you don't go out with others.

Basically, you need to just be with that person--you never even need to go on a date once to be a couple. In fact, the people who actually hang out and don't bother going on tons of dates usually have stronger, longer, and more meaningful relationships. On the other hand, you have those little fifth graders (and mind you, this can go all the way up to senior year) who say they are going out and all they do is wave at each other and giggle.

The entire concept of going out with someone is pretty complex, not something that can be answered "Yes" or "No."

<PS>

Looking at his question more closely, I see another meaning...

Do you mean specifically to this one date, or would this be a general question? It makes all the difference. Since you seem to be speaking about terminology.... "going out" wouldn't be a "date," but rather "dating."
