Cellar Door Posted April 22, 2014 Posted April 22, 2014 Genius Of Hard Work [ --- ]Effect: When taking this skill, characters must choose 1 Taijutsu Style, Ninjutsu Element, or Genjutsu Archetype. At each ninja rank, characters with this skill may purchase a number of techniques of the chosen Style, Element, or Archetype that are 1 rank higher than the user's rank at their normal cost. Up to 8 JP worth of techniques may be purchased in this way at Genin rank, 12 JP at Chunin rank, and 20 JP at Jonin rank. Upon reaching the rank of a chosen technique, the base damage of that technique is increased by 10% + 10% for each rank above the rank of that technique.Description: Not all ninjas are born with natural talent, and there are some who are so untalented that they must work very hard to become passable shinobi. Those who put in effort, and train every day though, find that they can surmount even the largest obstacles and become great ninja, able to go toe to toe with even the most gifted.Techniques: Example JutsuCost: -1; 15-Post Training Quote
Rei Posted July 11, 2014 Posted July 11, 2014 -shrug- I think we disagreed over the post count, but not enough to hold back the skill. Approved. Note: Can you put Genius Of Hard Work in the title? Easier to search for. Quote
cntrstrk14 Posted June 3, 2017 Posted June 3, 2017 Pulled back, this needs one of the following two things. • This needs a clause that says "This may not be Talent Shifted". • Needs a rework so that its not just a dead skill when the player reaches Sennin level. I prefer the first on something like this since no matter what you do the bonus you change it to will not be "strictly better" most likely. Meaning that there is a possible scenario where a player could want to get rid of this skill once they hit Sennin. I have a really large bone to pick with skills like this that lose all value at end level and then can be removed from the character. It's more like the player is putting SP on hold and getting it back later for massive mid game bonuses. That rubs me all kind of the wrong way. Also, if you know of other skills that fit this description point me at them. Also, smaller note, but Gifted and Genius also now get this bonus normally. You can probably remove their special training. Quote
Cellar Door Posted October 2, 2017 Author Posted October 2, 2017 Bam. Gave this a face lift after some heavy thinking on it. Quote
Princess Posted October 2, 2017 Posted October 2, 2017 Quick question: Are you required to possess the element/style/archetype used by this? Say could someone pick gravity, which obviously they can't get until level 30 without path of the shaman, at character creation and just sit on it until they can get gravity? Obviously it would be janky and wasting SP in the short term, but there are ways it could be almost worth while. Also, can you back buy with this? Say I get this skill at jounin, can I buy a chuunin technique and give it the +20% base as if I had bought it as a gennin? Not to say either of those are bad or balance concerns, just legitimate questions. 1 Quote
Cellar Door Posted October 2, 2017 Author Posted October 2, 2017 First Question: This skill in no way qualifies you for any technique. You must be able to purchase it as you would normally.Second Question: This does not grant bonus JP in the conventional sense. You may spend 8/12/20 of your own JP. That JP doesn't come with an additional double JP cost for being higher rank. So... yes. You can use your own JP to buy whatever you want, but if you take the skill and then do not purchase the techs, you're kinda shooting yourself in the foot. Quote
Peregine Posted October 2, 2017 Posted October 2, 2017 If a Jonin takes this skill, can they retroactively apply it to chuunin or jonin techniques they have already purchased? Quote
Kouta Posted October 2, 2017 Posted October 2, 2017 (edited) Are we breaking the Damage Caps with that Damage? A Chunnin Jutsu will get +30% Damage, a Jounin Jutsu +20% and a Sennin Jutsu +10%. So if we're not breaking caps, then it encourages you to spend this on Status Heavy Jutsu with less than maxed out damages, which is fine by me. Also hows the intended combo of this with something like Shiva the Destroyer? Shiva lets you break damage caps for Shiva's effect, so if you use Shiva, can this break caps? And without it it cannot? Cellar Door Posted October 2, 2017 Author Posted October 2, 2017 Breaks caps. Stacks with other stuff. Quote
Cellar Door Posted October 26, 2017 Author Posted October 26, 2017 @cntrstrk14 Tell me what you think of this new version when you get a chance. Quote
cntrstrk14 Posted October 27, 2017 Posted October 27, 2017 So basically at Sennin level you can, at best, have a 880 base damage jutsu that you learned? And a handful of more cost effective damage jutsu from lower levels? I feel like that is maybe not worth -2 sp? I feel like people will still want to talent shift this at level cap. Quote
Cellar Door Posted October 27, 2017 Author Posted October 27, 2017 How about we push it down to -1 then. Quote
cntrstrk14 Posted October 29, 2017 Posted October 29, 2017 No you misunderstood. I think the main effect is certainly worth at least -2. I don't think the "take over" effect is worth the -2 SP. To clarify, one of my largest issues with this skill is that I believe most people will talent shift it away at sennin rank. I don't like skills that give early game advantages that just get dropped later on. So we can either increase what the secondary "sennin" bonus is, or we can just do the simple fix of slapping on "This skill may not be Talent Shifted." Quote
