From the Neirol News:

Early this morning a team of reporters set out to discover why our great ninja village had gone silent in the night. What they found would tear at their souls. Approximately five kilometers from the village itself, they came across a line that cut the ground in front of them. At first it just looked to be a change of color, but upon closer investigation the reporters would find that everything across that line was dead. (See below image) All plant life and animals had simply ceased to exist. The line left behind was abnormally precise, cutting a very clear cut in an arc. Early indications and followings seems to show that this arc actually makes a circle, a five kilometer radius (ten kilometer diameter) of lifelessness all the way around the village. Our reporters have yet to venture further into the forest to see what came of Kusagakure no Sato itself, but the worst is feared.
Late last night around the hour of 21:00 all communication with Kusagakure no Sato stopped. No distress call, no indication that anything was wrong, all communication just halted. Believing it was just a downed wire outside the village as no direct lines run to the village, only outposts around it, the city officials waited until morning to send out a team to investigate. The Neirol police division along with their ninja correspondence who went to the site have yet to release an official comment. We can only speculate what kind of vile ninja magic caused such a disaster to occur.

Neirol News update:

Late yesterday investigation teams went to observe Kusagakure no Sato. Their official reports indicate that no bodies were found anywhere in the village. Possibly the most eerie finding was piles of clothes all across the village, in homes, in the streets and stores. It appeared as if they people wearing them had simply ceased to exist. These reports are incomplete and the investigation is on going. We will continue to update you as we find more information. One of our reporters was able to get a hold of an aerial view done by the investigation team. As you can see in the below image, it appears as if all plant life was destroyed in the event as well. As indicated in reports, no living organic material was found anywhere within the five kilometers of the village. Trees now stand as lifeless hunks of wood, once grassy fields are now only dirt and dried composite. This is truly a tragedy beyond words.
It has been confirmed that it appears that the hidden village was ground zero, based on the radius and positioning of what the reports have begun to call the "dead circle". Please tune in to radio station Hara K103.2 for ongoing updates in this case.

Aftermath

Border outside Kusagakure no Sato, approximately 5km from village

The demonic devastation of Kusagakure following the Chuunin Exams held in Metropolis caused irreparable damage to the village's infrastructure. Haramatsu Korin was not within the village when the incident occurred, and returning from a failed task in the Lorien, came upon a barren and abandoned home.

With the help of the Kaitou no Totsuka, Korin managed to destroy the withered Harakage's tree and now resides petrified upon the remnants of its stump. Korin's energies were then merged with what little was left of the tree's deepest roots, and she has given up her life as Harakage, wife, and mother to live on as the rekindled spirit of Kusagakure in hopes of regrowing the tree and ultimately the village. She leaves a last message to what remains of her displaced people:

"I’m afraid that I don’t have the power to be concerned with who or what did this. What I can do is lay down the foundations to begin this land’s restoration.
"Remember that the sun must set to rise, that oak forests will age and perish unless flame tempers their seedlings to sprout. In turn those seedlings are fed by the ashes of their forebears and the forest strengthens. The fall is a part of how life goes. Beginning anew isn’t the worst thing to happen- sometimes it’s for the best! Kusagakure will return, I promise that as my final duty as Harakage.
"So maybe I wasn’t the greatest Harakage, but it is now that I am ready for my vocation and now I turn unto my calling. It has been upon my honor to to serve this village to the very end. I have no regrets- shinobi and civilians alike have died for Kusagakure, and I am lucky to be able to live on for it. I could never, ever have asked for more."
