In the Fall of 2104 a terrorist group using the name of Akatsuki infiltrated the upper levels of the Iwagakure no Sato and swiftly took control of the village. The Tsuchikage at the time, Kinsa Natari, was captured and imprisoned. He would later die while in imprisonment. The invasion would last until the Summer of 2105 when a team lead by Alchem Syaoran from Konohagakure no Sato would effectively infiltrate and assassinate the Akatsuki leader within the village, Oketsu. The invasion is remembered vividly in the minds of the village residents due to the violence and death that occurred during it, the most drastic being the near genocide of the Alchem clan.

Many believe the reason Akatsuki was able to hold the village for over nine months was due to the combination of police state, high profile hostages and the use of terrorist tactics and guerrilla warfare tactics. The village was not prepared to handle such an attack from the inside and its own defenses proved to be its own worst enemy. Once the enemy was inside it took months to get them out.

Alchem Clan Genocide

In the first few weeks of the invasion, many Alchem clan members attempted at the cost of their own lives to overthrow Oketsu. The terrorist leader gathered the entire clan together and torched the district with the families inside as a message to others who thought to overthrow their rule. The message was loud and clear, many ninja fearing for the lives of those they loved, continued along their daily routines. The Alchem clan estates, its members, and all of the knowledge they had gathered over centuries went up in flames in a single afternoon by the order of Oketsu. The only known surviving members were Alchem Syaoran and Alchem Sanji who were outside of the village at the time.

Konohagakure Rescue Mission

A team of ninja lead by Alchem Syaoran was taken from Konohagakure no Sato into the heart of Iwagakure no Sato with the mission of rescuing the Tsuchikage and assassinating Oketsu. The team was a coalition of ninja pulled together my Konoha to aid their ally, coming from many different nations but finding a common purpose in the Land of Fire.

• Sunagakure no Sato — Akasabure Genome, Akasabure Suien, Ikimichi Tabuto, & Tsuhiiro-Hi Kata

The team assaulted Iwagakure no Sato, finding passage into the village with Syaoran and Sanji's knowledge of their home. They swiftly made their way through the village, engaging in small skirmishes with lower level Akatsuki members before finally confronting Oketsu. With their combined power they were barely able to overcome the demonic Akatsuki leader and his cursed blade Hinshi. In the battle Akasabure Genome was slain by Oketsu while trying to create an opening for the team. The defeat of Oketsu freed the village, allowing the Alchem cousins to finally return him after nearly a year outside the village.
