Appearance

Height: 6’3"

Hair Color: Dark, brillaint pink. Long and shaggy, falling past his shoulders
Eye Color: Emerald Green
Clothing: Not exactly the traditionalist, he can usually be seen sporting a loose vest-style jacket with no undershirt, a necklace of prayer beads, and dark shorts or a styled loincloth when he is working in the dirt. He’s been kicked out of several affairs for refusing to wear shoes and is never seen without a gourd of sake on a sling, where he keeps his hitai-ate secured. When he is out of the village or on a mission, Koji wears longer shorts with a chain weave inlaid for defense and trades his trademark vest for a long cloak, partially armored in a similar manner as his shorts. On top of this, he wears a large goose-neck style gourd filled with rye liquor or barley wine across his back in addition to his smaller sake gourd.
Physical Description: A hard working youth, Koji’s skin is darkened by his long days in the sun. His deep crimson pink hair is uncut, hanging over his shoulders almost past his pectorals. A large young man, wiry and strong of constitution, Koji has brilliant green eyes, the only defining feature of his ancestry in the Hanamajo clan. He wears a swiping of dried mud under his chin and swiped across his face when working in the heat, both to keep the sun off and to limit the access of biting insects.

Koji’s feet are calloused and hard from the rocks and dirt of Suna’s rocky plateaus, depending on the day of the week he may be seen with a half grown beard and reek of mud and grime. When he is involved with his garden and fermentation he often forgets or has no patience to return to his home in the village to bathe. Instead he partakes of mud and dust baths until he has time to leave his garden shack in the outskirts.

History

As a child, Koji was a boy full of wonder. From a young age he reveled in exploring every inch and mile of Sunagakure and the surrounding mountainous wilderness. As a member of the distinguished Hanamajo clan, Koji was taught the balance of life and the beauty of every living thing at a very early age. He was taught by his parents the ways of farming and while he grew to appreciate the art of horticulture, he also grew to despise working on the clan farms that produced food in larger quantities for the village.

At the first chance he got, Koji found a small patch of dirt away from the hustle and started his own small garden growing whatever random seeds he could convince to sprout in the harsh climate of Sunagakure. For the young Hanamajo this was initially only hardy desert grasses and the occasional cacti. As he grew and learned the proper techniques however, he began to grow and produce plants that were considered exotic in his locale. The young boy would haggle with smirking merchants for any seed he could get his hands on, wanting to test his mettle at growing even the most swamp-loving plants in the arid climate. Many of his early attempts were met with failure, but the skill of the village's most talented horticulturists flowed through his veins and he eventually prospered. Despite this apparent talent for gardening, even among his clansmen, Koji still flaked out of work whenever he thought he could get away with it.

Koji was eight years old when the Empire rose to power across the known world. As a result, his academy training was put on hold. Koji retreated into his gardening more than ever before. The occupation scarred him less than it did others of his village and clan. He became something barely above a hermit in those years, seldom seen anywhere but his family home and his personal garden. When Sunagakure regained its independence from the Kumo Empire, Koji barely noticed. He never returned to the academy.

When his twelfth year passed by, the young Hanamajo decided he wanted more than a corner garden tucked away in the clan estates. He was entering the rebellious years of youth and knew deep down that what he really craved was solace. He’d made few friends in his life, and those he had were not close. Nonetheless, he possessed a deepening empathy for everything and everyone around him. The two years of suffering that had gone on around him hadn’t affected him directly but every day he felt the pain from those around him. He yearned to be free of it. So one late fall day, he did just that. He put his few belongings into a pack and left home, walking alone into the harsh mountain ranges of Kaze No Kuni.

He was gone for months. His family worried for his well being, and some even made a passing attempt to search for the rogue youth. When he finally returned, on the eve of his thirteenth birthday, he was a changed boy. Though questioned at length about his absence, the best his family could get out of him was that he had been living deep in the mountains alone, renewing his love for horticulture. In reality, Koji had gravely misunderstood the hardships of the harsh wilderness. Three weeks into his trek he’d found himself out of his food stores and dehydrated in the parched desert mountainscape. Koji had eventually collapsed from exhaustion, near death, only to awaken at an odd establishment hidden away in a low canyon. The Ochiru bath house would be considered an oddity by most people, but Koji was more than thankful to them for saving his life. The bath house was perched atop a natural hot spring deep in the mountains of Kaze No Kuni and surrounded by bubbling pools of churning muds, the perfect place to come and wash your cares away. The young Hanamajo quickly earned the friendship of the bath houses proprietor in a sly, wisplike woman named Touma Yui.

As thanks for saving his life, Koji worked at the Ochiru house for many months, tending the hot springs, cleaning, and most importantly gardening. He taught the chefs of the establishment some of his knowledge on growing non-native plants and in turn the head chef, a pasty man with a swirly mustache named Namazu, taught Koji the way of the kitchen. Of all the tasks Koji had taken to, he took to cooking the fastest. He found he had an innate talent in a niche corner of the kitchen, where Namazu fermented grains to make Ochiru’s “world famous ale.” Over the next couple months, and indeed through the rest of his years, Koji learned the ways of the brewmaster from Namazu and the art of the mud element from Yui and her amphibious friends of the Nyuuyoku Clan. Koji would forever feel the pull of Ochiru, and over the years began to spend more and more time away from the village and learning the new and interesting arts he was so fascinated with. Eventually, Yui surprised him with a shack in the bath house that he could call his own, and the young Hanamajo was content for a time.

It would be years before Koji would return to the village for any real length of time. When he did, he elected to complete the village academy exam, officially joining the ranks of the village’s genin. He did so with some hesitation, knowing the duties of a shinobi would take away from his preferred occupations at the bath house. Nevertheless, he accepted his responsibility as a protector of Sunagakure as tensions rose across the great countries.
