NS3

NS3 is an extremely rare terminal illness with no known cause. It's aggressive ability to damage and destroy internal organs results in an extremely short and painful life expectancy once the disease manifests.

Cause

The exact cause of NS3 is unknown, however most classify it as a non-inheritable genetic disorder. Symptoms generally appear without warning in the mid-to-late 20's, though the youngest confirmed diagnosis was only eight years old. The only acknowledged common trait among all carriers is that they were, in some fashion, shinobi, which causes some to speculate that the disease is triggered by a chakra-induced mutation of a genome. Others disagree with classifying all confirmed patients under the umbrella of one disease, due to the difference in family history, location, gender, age and bloodlines.

Symptoms

Once the symptoms of NS3 have manifested, the illness progresses rapidly with a life expectancy less than one year. The disorder causes an almost autoimmunity like response as vital organs begin to aggressively deteriorate, especially the heart, lungs, liver, and kidneys. It can also causes severe damage to tenketsu pathways, making it difficult if not impossible to mold chakra. Since the disease progresses so rapidly it's hard to tell if the symptoms start to fail simultaneously or if something sets off a chain reaction seeing as by the time it's diagnosed several of the body's internal organs have already begun to fail. Brain function is relatively unaffected, however mental duress due to pain or other stress factors is common.

The study and knowledge of long-term effects is almost entirely unknown, as only one known recipient as lived more than a few years.

Cardiovascular System

Inflammation of the lungs and heart results in a chronic cough with blood-tinged mucus, shortness of breath and poor circulation. Breathing becomes increasingly more difficult,

Digestive System

Nausea is a common complaint from those with NS3 due to difficulty digesting food and liquids, resulting in little to no appetite and weight loss. Damage done to the kidneys and liver causes complications with metabolizing nutrients and medicines. Most patients are anemic to some degree.

Treatment

There is no known cure for NS3, and due to the damage that is done to the internal organs it can be very difficult to treat. The deterioration of the kidney and liver makes it difficult to metabolize most common medicines, and further complications with the digestive and cardiovascular system means that most recipients experience side effects that are as bad, or worse, than the symptoms they are trying to combat. Because the illness is terminal, medics primarily focus on palliative care so the patient can maintain as much of their quality of life as possible.

Trivia

• The original inspiration of NS3 (including it's name) is derived from cystic fibrosis, though it is not an exact comparison. The cause and several of the symptoms were changed to reflect how they are represented in roleplay. Other influences are include autoimmune diseases (such as myocarditis), and treatable diseases caused by bacteria (tuberculosis).
