Her grandmother aimed to ensure she would never become a shinobi, however, she aspiration to become a ninja was so strong her grandmother enrolled her into the Academy. To this day, she loves being a shinobi and aspires to be the best shinobi she can be.

Family

Father: Yamada, Ryuu [DECEASED] - A former Kumogakure Ninja who specialized in Kenjutsu. Ryuu was never seen without his sword, Burūdoragon (Blue Dragon). Ryuu died while on a mission protecting his village. It is said to be that the only things he loved more than his sword, were his wife, Yuki, and their unborn child.

Mother: Yamada, Yuki [DECEASED] - While alive, Yuki was a server at a local BBQ restaurant in Kumogakure. During her pregnancy, she ate most of her meals while she was working at the restaurant. Aoi believes this to be the reason for her love of BBQ. Yuki died while giving birth to Aoi.

Grandmother: Yamada, Wakana [DECEASED] - Wakana was Aoi’s paternal grandmother, and primary caregiver for most of her life. Wakana worked as a manager in a BBQ restaurant until she retired. Once retired, she took to gardening. Wakana became ill shortly after Aoi reached age 15. After nine months, Wakana’s illness took her, leaving Aoi with no more living relatives.

History

Ryuu and Yuki longed for child, and tired to have a child for two years. Finally, after two year, Yuki became pregnant. Once pregnant, she continued to work until it was time for her to have her child. However, 4 months before Aoi expected birth, Ryuu was sent on an A rank mission. On his mission, Ryuu encountered missing-nin who attacked him, killing each member of his team. When Yuki heard the news, she did all she could and collapsed to the ground. In response, her mother-in-law and co-workers promised to help raise her future child to ensure she grew up in a large family unit. During childbirth, Yuki experienced some complications, killing her in the process of Aoi’s birth. After she was born, Aoi was sent to live with her grandmother.

Five years later, Aoi was still living with her grandmother, and being raised by Wakana and other employees of the BBQ restaurant. Aoi tended to be a bit of townboy, often playing shinobi with other children around her own age. After the death of her son, Wakana aimed to shield Aoi’s interest in becoming a shinobi one day. In said attempt, Wakana brought in Aoi to work within the restaurant in any odd jobs she could find for me. However, Aoi was still a child and would often get in trouble. While working at the restaurant, Aoi would often crawl on the floor under the tables. One day while crawling on the floors, she overheard shinobi discussing plans of some mission. She was unable to hear in detail what they were saying. Instead, she just fantasized about becoming a shinobi herself one day.

Less than a year later, the Kumogakure Invasion occurred. She did not truly understand what was happening. She would overhear villagers sharing stories and rumors that had heard from the battlefront of each nation being invaded. At the time, she did not care if they were true or false, because in her mind the shinobi were powerful and fighting for a cause. Her grandmother tried her best to shield Aoi from everything, but again, was unable to stop the imagination of her granddaughter.

No matter how old Aoi became, Wakana prohibited Aoi from joining the academy. Until one day, Wakana changed her mind and enrolled her in the academy. Aoi states this was the happiest day of her life. However, Wakana knew she was dying, and decided to do so to bring her granddaughter some happiness before experiencing inevitable sadness. Six months before Aoi would finish up in the academy, Wakana died. Aoi almost lost the will to live. She knew that her grandmother would want her to continue doing what made her happy. She emotionally retreated from world, but put on a smile. She promised she would be terminally delightful. Thus, causing Aoi to smile and try to be positive as much as possible. She knew her grandmother would want her to be happy.
