Akatsuki

Akatsuki, as they exist in current times, is an organization that resembles but it not connect to the Akatsuki of historical significance. (See Akatsuki (historical)). Their only known activity in resent years was the Akatsuki Invasion of Iwagakure no Sato in 2104. Though little is known about their organization, size or goals, it is suspected that many of their members still roam unchecked throughout the continent. In 2105 the organization was eradicated from Iwagakure no Sato, all of its occupants within the city either being killed or captured. The members who were captured, seventeen in all, were of low membership knew nothing of the leadership or of the goals of the organization. Fourteen of the prisoners mysteriously died within holding cells within Iwagakure no Sato while the remaining three have been put under top security hold within the village.

Akatsuki is not thought to have any ties to the Kumogakure Empire or the N.C.I.A. as all prisoners within Iwagakure no Sato were held during the occupation.

It is theorized that this group of Akatsuki was merely a terrorist group using the historical name as a means of bringing fear upon their opponents. Because of the silence and relative lack of any information on the organization since 2105 it is believed that they have either disbanded or have switched their identity to one of the many other known terrorist groups, possibly even merging with other factions. There is a committed team of shinobi with the Country of Earth that are constantly on the search for Akatsuki and other terrorist groups, though their findings and actions are strictly confidential.
