Ikiryo Uta

Ikiryo Uta, the only current inheritor of the ancient Ikiryo clan's medium bloodline, is a devoted servant of Otogakure. He is a chuunin and the recent leader of a foreign team from Sunagakure as tensions rise in the world, and he wants them to see the best of the darkness before the world is once again deprived of light.

Appearance

Hair: Uta's hair is a brilliant mix of pastel blue and ethereal lavender. It remains long and wild, standing out at irregular angles as if supported by some invisible force. In spite of what those around him might believe, Uta doesn't dye his hair. Ever since his eyes were returned, the unlocked genetic code in his body has triggered this transformation from its previous ash grey.
Eyes: Uta has ghostly blue iris, surrounded by a smokey black sclera that gives him a consistently unearthly appearance, especially to those who don't know him. The skin around his eyes is heavily scarred as a result of continual surgeries in his youth.
Attire:

• Ninja [General]: Uta wears a half length white robe over a pair of standard Otogakure ninja pants, which are tucked into his high black boots. Over his robe he wears his black chuunin vest with the neck guard fastened in place over his shoulders. The right sleeve of his robe is absent, allowing his bare flesh and the intake valves of his implanted air pressure device to be exposed in case he requires them for combat. He keeps his flute hidden in his chest pocket, and proudly shows off the blackened limbs which mark him as one who has walked the other side and returned.
• Ninja [Travel]: Uta wears his general ninja attire when travelling, but supplements it with a heavy travel cloak which pins in place over his neck guard on the right shoulder. Because of how it is pinned, he can still keep his weaponised arm free for use if ambushed or otherwise waylaid, plus it makes a helpful tool for intimidation.
• Civilian: When not worried about combat at all, Uta tends towards a simple white tank top over his Otogakure combat pants. He is proud of his role as a ninja, and even when off duty he still likes to project the role he cares about. If it is particularly cold, he might wear his robe open over the top to provide some warmth, but in general he prefers to be free when outside of a combat situation.

Physical Description: Uta has a thin build exacerbated by the perpetual drought of his homeland. He is covered in surgical scars, but nowhere are they more apparent than around his eyes. He isn't particularly tall, falling on the shorter size of people his age, but he carries himself with strength and pride. Uta's arms and legs are all, up to the major joint, blackened by his contact with the afterlife. His right palm has a metallic ring which allows his air pressure device to exert high pressure wind and sound attacks, and several rings lining his arm allow him to intake and vent air as necessary.
Ghost Form: Uta also possesses, thanks to the Reikai no Hansha, the ability to convert his body entirely into ectoplasm, and adopt a ghostly form. He turns transparent and glows a ghostly blue, his blackened limbs fade into nothingness for any who can't perceive the world beyond sight. In this form, Uta levitates above the ground, his hair moves like it were under water, and his iris transforming into pinpoints of unearthly light.

History

Unwanted Youth

Unlike many ninja, Uta was born into a family of demi-competent ninja who comfortably survived the Kumogakure occupation unscathed. Born with the family name 'Jikken', he had no idea what the future would hide for him, and if they knew his parents surely never showed they cared. Hana, his mother, resented Uta for holding her back from promotion while she was pregnant with him, and his father Dai just straight up did not care for his son. It was only his grandfather that showed any true affection for the boy in his infant years, and was the only one to protest when in search of a quick few hundred ryo Uta's parents sold him to a shadowy organisation of shinobi ninja in Otogakure's underground at age eight. Used as part of an experiment, the scientists cut into Uta time and time again, removing and reimplanting his eyes over and over again, as well as cutting him up all over in many ways. For four long years he was brutally experimented upon, leaving immense physical and psychological scars from which the boy would never truly recover. Eventually, through the intervention of his grandfather, Uta was returned to his family and allowed to complete his academy training quickly, but things were a little different now, Uta was blind. His eyes were left behind, and he would have to start his journey without them.

A Drunken Mistress, A Gennin in Distress

Uta was teamed up with Hagemasu Kikuya, a sound eater and prodigious alcoholic who always happened to make sure whatever training Uta was undergoing, there was a club nearby. In his time since the academy, Uta worked hard to develop his capacity to echolocate, helping him to understand more of the world around him without his eyes. Interacting with her infrasonic powers gave him hope for the world, and together the two completed much of his training before the growing shortage of high ranking ninja forced Uta to bid his teacher farewell. Just as he was left alone again, his grandfather returned with a promise, he would help Uta recover his eyes, believing there was something important awaiting Uta if he found his eyes. Unbeknownst to Uta, his grandfather had worked on the team that tortured him, and this gave him innate knowledge about the goings on that no one else could have. Reluctantly, the gennin snuck into a compoud, recovered his eyes and underwent full surgery to restore them. He was unconscious for three days.

When he awoke, his eyes saw the various spectres that haunted a hospital as...historically unsuccessfully.

Chuunin, Teacher and the Unwinnable Battle

Since regaining his eyes, Uta took to attacking countless missions, desperate to show his renewed worth to the village he adored. He set off on a number of high rank missions, interacting with the wider world helped open his eyes to some of the darker excesses of his hometown, but also helped ram home the desperation of Otogakure's position. He hated working with other villages, relying on them and begging them for aid. He dreamed of a solution to the ills of the rice field country, but found no solution. He kept trying, but got nowhere, much to his continual despair. Eventually, due in no small part to how rare jounin were becoming, Uta was tasked with taking on a leadership role for four new gennin, not from Otogakure but from Sunagakure. These gennin were lacking in the strength that made Uta and other sound warriors unstoppable, but he was confident given time anyone could flip to seeing his way of interacting with things.

Trivia

Public Knowledge; IC

• Uta changed his surname to adopt the family name of his ancestors, making him the only current person named Ikiryo in Denchi no Kuni at the moment.
• Uta is fast catching up to his parents in rank, and they make it very clear to any who listen they resent him for that.
• While the exact nature of his surgical scars in generally unknown, it is Otogakure. People have drawn a lot of conclusions and rare are they wrong.
• Uta claims to be able to see and communicate with the spirits of the dead. This does not make him popular among his fellow shinobi.
• Uta had a team mate under Hagemasu Kikuya for a short period and the pair did not get along. That boy has since gone missing.
• Uta became a ninja as a youth with no eyes, and while the exact circumstances of his retrieval of his ocular organs is unknown, the vast physical changes it made to him are hard not to notice.

• Uta may be the only current Ikiryo, but his grandfather has instructed him to seek out others who also have the latest genes to join the clan. He doesn't particularly care for it.
• Uta has a strong aversion to alcohol after his gennin training with Hagemasu Kikuya.
• Uta has a crippling fear of medics, which comes from his years of being experimented upon by underground scientist groups theoretically loyal to the village.
• Uta broke into the laboratory where he was experimented upon to retrieve his eyes and killed some of the scientists there. He could be declared as a missing nin for that, but then the village would need to acknowledge its agents were working there. Thus far, they haven't moved against him.

• Princess' first character, and one of the longest lasting characters in Otogakure due to its tiny population.
• Princess could not tell you what inspired Uta originally.
• More recently, in spite of everyone saying 'Man Danny Phantom' whenever the Ikiryo clan come up, they are based off a Monster High doll, Spectra Vondergeist.
• Princess is working on the Doki summons Tayuya used in the anime, Uta already has the air pressure device Zaku used built into his arm, and Princess has had a couple of shots at designing the sound amplifying gauntlet of Dosu. Uta just absorbs cannon Otogakure material.
