~Persona~

Personality:

“Ill say it outright. I’m a coward. I don’t like to fight because there is no money in it. You cant make a profit if you’re being buried” ~Quote from Oko to Jester B

Oko is a coward at his core. Unless he knows he can win a fight absolutely, he’ll run at the first sign of problems. But despite this, the other Joybringers have come to like him. He is friendly, but arrogant, and amongst the small troupe he’s gained a small notion of notoriety. But he is a thief first and formost, and that line of work requires the charisma to be a good liar, and to use words as disarming weapons. However, Oko is extremely greedy and has found untapped reseviors of bravery in the presence of large bills. This tendency has given him the nickname “Courage for hire” amongst some of the other Thieves.

Likes:

“Oko, he’s not hard to please. Just give him money, or give him a job so he can make money. Really, he’s a unilateral guy.” Boss D

When he wakes up smiling, the greedy Oko probably dreamed about one of two things; the perfect heist, or the money that the perfect heist brought. Those are his two greatest passions in this life, thieving and the money that can be made doing so. But, every thief knows when to take it easy, and Oko is no fool. When he isn’t plotting or planning a new job, he plays the flute, hangs around with the acrobats, or goes out to meet other people. Many think there is a secretive part about him that drives him to meet and connect with others only to break that connection later when the caravan moves.

Dislikes:

“Oh dear me no! Oko would never become one of those. Just the mention of them turn his eyes that lovely shade of blue.” Jester A when asked if Oko would ever enroll into the ninja academy.

Oko doesn’t like shinobi. Having witnessed his fathers death was a small part of it, but the brunt comes from their methods. They are loud and destructive, two qualities that have no use for a thief. Added on to that is the ten years spent in an orphanage where he made few friends, only to have them up and join the ninja academy. But as his passions, the things he dislikes are wide and varied.

Favorites:

-Food:

Stewed tomatoes with garlic and oregano, served beside an herb basted chicken breast over a bed of al dente pasta.

-Color:

Gold, copper, bronze, brass. The warm, glowy metals that usually have some tie to wealth.

-Music Genre:

Oko isn’t much of a musical connoisseur, preferring quiet natural sounds. He views music as a distraction method, and hasn’t really learned to appreciate it.

-Hangout:

Where there is a crowd, there is Oko. Even if he isn’t working, Oko loves the feel of crowds. There is a strange life force to it, and Oko thrives in it. When he is in crowds though, he keeps a small wallet with no money in it, just a note written inside that says “Fooled you, didn’t I?”

~Background~

Some things just aren’t meant to be. That is what the man in the suit had told the young Oko on the day of his father’s funeral. Then ten years old, Oko tried his best not to cry, an attempt that ended in miserable failure. He would be taken to a new home, one that wasn’t located in the middle of an evergreen grove. The man in the suit knelt down, meeting Oko’s green eyes with his. “What’s your birthday son?” He had asked. His tone bespoke sincerity, but his eyes lacked that quality.

Oko did his best to look tough, to look strong like his dad used to be, and puffed out his small chest. “I was born on the longest night in the year. I’ve seen that day come and go five times now.” The answer seemed to satisfy the man in the suit, who stood up to go talk with another suit-clad man.

“The boy doesn’t even know his birthday. What was this man thinking, trying to raise a child out in the woods like that?” He whispered to his counterpart, a man in a burgundy suit. “This is obviously a case of child neglect. Any news about the mother?”

“No sir, there was just Yohida and this boy. What should we do with him?” A question voiced without emotion. “He will probably just be sent to the orphanage with all the other children. No doubt there are hundreds more with his same story. He should be safe there, and at least he will be fed and kept care of.”

The two men shook hands, before the man in the suit returned taking little Oko by the hand and pulling him away from the small grave that his father was interred in. “Come on son, everything will be fine.” Oko looked up at the man in the suit and smiled weakly. “You promise?” He asked. The man nodded, and the young boy gingerly grabbed his outstretched hand.

~An Unnamed Orphanage: Somewhere in Konoha 10 years later.~

Ukate moved away today. He said he was enrolling in the ninja academy in the main city. I have to ask myself, “Do these kids really know what they are getting themselves into?” The more I see of this shinobi way, the more I question the wisdom of turning young children like us into weapons of war. Something about it all seems wrong to me, but no one seems to question it. Maybe I’m just being paranoid. I’ll admit, I do seem to be the only one who doesn’t trust them. Everyone else looks up to them as if they were some sort of god or savior, coming down from on high to shower their benevolence on us lesser people. Children talk of learning ninja arts like it was learning their alphabet. It is saddening. They are called heroes, but if those are the heroes…who are the bad guys?

Oko set his pen down on the writing desk, closing and locking his journal as he had done nearly every night for the last five years. He’d found that by keeping a journal like this one, he could keep his thoughts in order without blowing up at the other children. None of the others knew that his father had been killed by Ninjas. Only a few of the higher ranked members at the orphanage knew anything about him. To the other kids, he was just Oko. Just plain unremarkable Oko. And that was fine, He didn’t want to be anything else. Being special drew attention to you, and Oko hated having attention focused on him. Over the last ten years he’d had very few encounters that resulted in trouble finding him, and those were very minor incidents.

With the sun well on it’s way to setting, Oko replaced the locked journal inside of his footlocker and changed into his pajamas. Tonight would be his last night at the orphanage. He didn’t know what he was going to do, where he would go, but he was not going to stay here and watch another family pass him by. He closed his eyes, and waited patiently for the sounds of footsteps on the hardwood floor. He could hear the door creak, as the noxious smelling night man opened the door and peered inside. The door closed, and the smell faded, and Oko slipped out of bed and set his feet on the moonlit floor. He put his clothes back on after removing the night uniform that was issued to all young children at the orphanage.

To many who look upon the young man, he seemed unremarkably average. Not too tall, not too skinny, he just exuded an aura of plain-ness. However, when the lights were out, and people were at rest, Oko wasn’t so plain. He was invisible. His soft soled shoes didn’t make a noise as he prowled over to the one window on the attic floor. He walked right past five other boys, and not one of them stirred. Green eyes scanned the attic room again, double checking to be sure his captors were still unaware before sliding down to the padlocks that held the window shut. There were two of them, that required two different keys to open, but Oko was prepared for even this eventuality. Slowly and carefully, he dug a series of hooked pins from his shirt, and in no time at all, the locks opened with a soft “Click”. A dab of butter on the hinges ensured their quiet compliance, and a moment later, Oko had slipped out nearly slithering down the brick wall with incredible agility.

By the time the night watch was making their second round, Oko was already long gone.

He traveled for a week, avoiding the main road when he could, and keeping himself discreet when there was no other option. It was as he was sitting down, picking the last few crumbs of a stale loaf of bread out of his bag, when he saw the caravan that would change his life. A gaudy wagon, covered in red and green fabric, was rolling by. He watched them pass, letting them get ahead of him. His stomach gurgled angrily at the lack of nourishment, but he kept his pace slow. Oko knew he could catch up to them when they made camp.

That night, the wagon stopped and made camp. A cheerful orange glow was accompanied by the smell of cooking meat and beans. It took all of the young man’s willpower to hold back a little longer. But he knew his patience would be rewarded, and in time the livelihood died off. The troupe sat around the fire sharing humor and companionship, while Oko lurked just outside of the fire’s radius. One by one, the caravaneers went to their tents and bedrolls and Oko knew it was now or never.

He kept his step to the balls of his feet, moving slowly and surely to keep his weight evenly distributed. His eyes darted across the small camp, making sure he was unseen, before he made his move. He snatched a bowl that had been left untended, dipped it into the remnants of the meal in a small kettle, and turned to make his escape.

Two men clad in orange and green jester garb stood before him, each one staring at the other. “Well now boy,” said the first his face hidden behind a smiling mask. “It seems you wandered into the wrong camp. Isn’t that right B?”

“It would seem so A, it would seem so. Whatever shall we do with this one?” The jester named B replied. “Perhaps we should introduce him to D?”

A, if that was his name, clapped his hands giddily before lacing his fingers beneath the porcelain visage. “Splendid! We’ll introduce him to D!”

The mirrored jesters moved toward him in flips and tumbles, and before Oko could move out of the way, four strong hands grabbed him tight. “Oh,” chimed B “I think D will like this one!” And without another word, he was dragged into a tent.

~Present Day~

The crowd was enormous. It seemed like half of the country had poured in to see the performance. After all, the Alphabet Circus was of no small renown. Acrobats and tumblers, flame dancers and contortionists. The spectacle was incredible. Citizens and visitors alike flocked to the grand tent, watching fantastic feats of skill and daring. And moving unseen amongst the crowd, were the Joybringers. Purses, wallets, jewelry, all of was swiftly and quietly gathered whilst the onlookers gawked in earnest pleasure. For the last two years, Oko had been one of the Joybringers. The Joybringers were a group of pickpockets and thieves that followed behind the Alphabet Circus acquiring things that didn’t quite belong to them., be it from the enthralled crowd, or from their estates while they were gone. And Oko was good at it. The show would go on for another few hours yet, but Oko was content he had gotten enough for the night. He laid his head down, and was swiftly asleep.

Pretty much everything looks great, the only problem is that the 'Rank' your character has won't work with the system. Almost all of the battle/levelling system rules hinge on the gennin/chuunin/etc. rankings, and since your character isn't technically a ninja and doesn't have any of these ranks it's not going to work out. The only suggestion I can make if you want to use that rank is to come up with a simple clan that has equivalents to the current acceptable ranks, or make him a gennin as well as being a part of this group in the past.

edited in a clause under rank. This character is kinda crucial to the formation of the joybringers within Konoha.

Before I stamp an approval; if you are considering him "Gennin", bear in mind that as of now there is no level-cap for Rank. Until you make a clan and have it approved, your character will not be able to advance past the rank of Pick-Pocket (Gennin) until other methods are established (i.e. the "Clan" is made and approved).

I would MUCH rather see the latter come first, even if it's just outlining how/when a character advances Rank, because as now the only way you can become a higher rank [e.g. Chuunin] is for the character to be appointed by the Kage (which your character won't be if you're not considering them a ninja).
