  3. I didn’t know what to make of this kind of scar, nor did I know how to justify why the hell a cloaked man would just come out at me like that. It was a perfectly open position to where anyone could see him, but he chose to wait until everyone at the house was gone. Was he watching over me for an extended period of time? Was he still watching over me at this very moment? Questions were flying through my head at ninety miles a minute, but I shook it off quickly. I can’t exactly do anything about it now, so all I could do was go on with my normal day. I went upstairs into my room after I put up the first aid kit, finally relaxing in my rolling computer chair. I grabbed my laptop and opened it up, only to be greeted with the log in screen of MODE. It is true that I closed it on this webpage, but it was the last thing I expected to be open after a day like today. Then again, the day has only been going on for about three hours or so. Eh, what harm could a game do? A whole lot, I assure you. Oh yeah, you’re still living here. What do you want, Dusk? Well, after you completely clobbered that guy, you kinda ruined my nap. I can’t stand the daytime. So you’ll be dealing with me for a while. Sounds like a personal problem, to be honest with you. I’ll make it real personal if you don’t shut the fuck up. Oh, calm down. Can we just move on with the story already? I swear, this fourth wall will be in pieces by Book #4. Shaking off Dusk’s inner commentary, I went ahead and typed up my username and password for MODE. I closed my eyes, letting the virtual reality consume me. This time, I was greeted with a familiar room and a familiar face, but in an unprecedented way. The young Ms. Helen was approaching me as an avatar, not as a face on the wall. For those who need a few more visuals, she was using her in-game body to talk to me this time. 4. Chapter 2 A Delicate Flower I tried to ignore the searing pain in my arm as I went inside my house, moving to mother’s bedroom first. If anybody else was in the house, they would be giving me a very confused look right now. In my family, I’m known to go for laptop first and foremost, no matter what else lied ahead in the day for me. If I had to take out the trash, I opened my computer and had it start up before I did that chore. It was just the kind of guy I am. However, I had something different to tend to that was a bit more important than my laptop. I quickly grabbed the first aid kit from my mother’s bathroom, moving to the kitchen to carry out the deed. Laying the kit down on the right counter, I opened it to let the tools be at my mercy. A few band aids, a special band aid meant to close cuts, a bottle of medicinal alcohol, and some cotton swabs. This looks like a weird cut that burned like hell, so I was going to have to use all of these things. I dampened one of the cotton swabs with a little bit of alcohol, preparing myself for a new world of pain. I grabbed a towel and stuck it in my mouth, biting down hard on it as I dabbed my cut with some of the alcohol. I could feel the sting of the liquids against my cut, but I did my best to endure it while it healed up. I quickly grabbed some of the band aids and patching up my cut, tugging the skin together to make sure it didn’t stay open to infection. In the end, the scar of it just looks damned weird, and it was still glowing with a light blue hue. Chapter 1 WC: 3,094 Chapter 2 WC: 308 Book WC: 3,402
  5. “One punch, eh? Sounds like you’re trying to make this awesome for yourself.” “I’m being honest, Mother. It only took me one punch.” “Huh.. We’ll have to talk about getting you into boxing then. You might have a good arm.” Out of all sports, I had a soft spot for boxing. I can get to that at another time though, considering we were already home. I hopped out of the van and told my mother that I loved her before making my way to the house. She drove off to work, leaving me outside of the house by myself for the moment. Well, that’s what I thought was happening until a cloaked man appeared beside me. I was shocked because I hadn’t seen anyone like this in our neighborhood before, and since my parents were gone, I had no one to call on for help. I was stranded against this mysterious man, so I merely called upon my first instinct. “Who are you..?” “YOUR PRIDE IS YOUR DOWNFALL.” He suddenly clutched at my bicep, hanging onto it for dear life. A burning sensation rang out from my arm, telling me to get this guy off. Now! I shivered, quickly punching the cloaked man on his head. He sprang back, revealing his face for only a moment. There was some weird tattoo near his eye that actually crept right into his pupil. His skin was a pale white, but his eyes.. were pure black with white irises. He put his cloak back on, quickly disappearing in a self-made shroud of shadows. The only thing I had to remember him by was a teal mark that glowed on my bicep, leaving a tear in my jean jacket. 6. I was in the office for a few hours, discussing things with the principal and bringing in my friends as eye witnesses. Unfortunately for Antario, he had no friends to call upon, so all of the evidence was against him (as the truth should be). He was dismissed with a suspension and the principal had a private meeting with me. “Zeke Free, you do realize I could have you suspended for this,” she said with a monotone voice. “I do understand that very well. I was only trying to protect my friends and I am prepared for the consequences.” She stood up from her chair and paced around behind her desk for a few seconds. It is true that me and the principal of this school are on good terms, but nothing could have prepared either of us to be faced with this kind of scenario. All I could hope for at this point was a miracle. She sat back down and stared me down, ready with an ultimatum in her arsenal. “I won’t suspend you and this fight won’t go on your student records, but you have to give something up in return, Zeke.” “What could be so big that I would get this covered up?” “You won’t be allowed to go to Prom next Friday.” “Oh, that’s fine. It’s not like I had anybody to take to that thing anyway.” “Odd, most kids your age would kill to get into that kind of dance with all your friends,” she said while tilting her head slightly. “I have better things to do than dance and get drunk. Consider it done.” We took care of most of the paperwork and she dismissed from the office, only to be greeted with my mother outside. It was still early in the morning, about 9 A.M. She seemed a bit happy about the situation though, and I wasn’t exactly about to question it. I hopped in her van and we took off from school, letting me get ready for a nice, relaxing day. “So, you finally stood up to Antario, honey?” My mother asked as she drove us home. “Yeah, I finally nailed him. It only took me one punch to lay him out flat!” Chapter 1 WC ~ 373 / 2,809 Book WC ~ 2,809
  7. All Antario could do was laugh at me, considering I was using a battle stance that wasn’t well known in the real world. To those outside of the game, it probably looked really idiotic. It was time to show those watching that they couldn’t be any more wrong. The large jock rushed toward me, readying a final blow for my nose. His arm cocked forward, slamming into me. And by me, I meant the open palm that I threw up, stopping his fist entirely. Antario was shocked by his attack being stopped, and using that to my advantage, I quickly brought my right hand up and curled it into a fist. My teeth clenched as I shifted my hips, my upper body doing the same as I threw all of my weight into that right straight. It collided with his nose and gave me a sense of satisfaction I would never be able to duplicate. The bulky athlete’s head flew back from the blow, only to let his body fall down limply afterward. There was no doubt about the fact that I had won this fight, considering he was knocked out. I lifted my hand up in victory before turning around to the coach, who was now looking mighty pissed. I walked over to him with my hands out, ready to be taken away to the office. “Would you mind escorting me? I’d rather not be tackled down today.” “Yes, Zeke Free.” Oh boy, using my full name meant I was in deep. He took me by the wrists and basically dragged me to the office, my gaze meeting up with a very special person in my life. Aya was staring me down, a bit shocked that such a thing happened to me. To be honest, I probably wouldn’t have believed it if I heard it coming from a future self of mine. Chapter 1 WC ~ 313 / 2,436 Book WC ~ 2,436
  8. “If you and your friends want to make it through first block, you’ll give me those steroids you used to beat me out,” Antario growled out. “Doesn’t that make your balls shrink, dude? Even if I used them, they wouldn’t have any effect on you.” “You’re right, my muscles are pretty big as it is.” “No, I meant your balls are small. Stop trying to give yourself credit.” Oh yeah, that comment definitely pissed him off. He brought his hand up to try and punch me, but for some reason, I was seeing in slow motion. It looked a lot like when I was fighting against some of the sins. There’s no way I was able to gain my powers in the real world though. I shifted my weight to the left, quickly weaving out of the way of his huge fist. His knuckles slammed against the bleachers, only causing him to yelp out in pain as I put a small amount of distance between the two of us. I didn’t want him to hurt my friends as a crutch, so I made sure to stay close. Of course, he grabbed Phillip by the collar this time, throwing him right at me. He was able to recover by landing on his knees, but that didn’t stop me from running toward my friend to protect him. Antario was already throwing another punch, but this time, it was aimed right for Phillip. I dove in the way, pushing him before taking a solid fist to my cheek. Shocks of pain flew through my body as I fell backward, my back hitting the ground as I clenched at my cheek. Funny.. I thought it’d hurt a lot more than that. Don’t get me wrong, it hurt like hell, but I thought a punch from someone like Antario would at least cause a little bleeding on the inside of my mouth. I slowly got up, wiping at my lips to see that only a little saliva escaped from that impact. Now I was just pissed off at him. “Enough fooling around. I’m serious now,” I said before getting into my Wind Stance, a special form I used when I fought Brainwave. Chapter 1 WC ~ 367 / 2,123 Book WC ~ 2,123
  9. That kind of passion in a class that you can pass just by jogging a little and dressing out is a bit unnecessary, but I had to give him credit for his persistence. As much as I wanted to give them some kind of answer to the question, I don’t know about it myself. I woke up with this kind of feeling inside of me that I was just a bit stronger than I was yesterday. The energy I had surging through my veins was something I had never experienced before. I never felt this way before I played MODE. “I drank plenty of juice this morning. Orange juice gets the blood flowing somehow,” I said sarcastically. They just frowned at me, huffing in such a humorous way that I knew couldn’t be serious. We just went on with our little jog before the jocks played basketball, our group taking shelter in our usually bleacher corner. I was just about ready to hear one of Phillip’s anime stories, but we had an unwanted guest on the horizon. It was the jock that tripped me during suicides. To give a bit of backstory, his name is Antario. He was always one to pick on me for my size (despite being larger than me in the belly aspect) and tends to use his muscle mass as a means of picking on others. Although I didn’t like to admit it, he was one of the best football players I’ve seen, and he has a mean tackle that would easily knock the breath right out of me. Antario and I were always at each other’s throats, but he had moved on to picking on some other poor victims. Why he chose today to mess with me, when I was feeling so high on this new strength? Most likely jealousy from having his thunder stolen. Antario came up to us, taking Anthony by the collar and lifting him up from the ground. If his goal was to piss me off, he’d get the first A in his damned life. I jumped off of the bleachers, grabbing the jock’s wrist. Our gazes met, mine being just a bit more serious than his. He let go of my friend for the moment, focusing all of his meaty attention onto me. Chapter 1 WC ~ 383 / 1,756 Book WC ~ 1,756
  10. “I don’t know what you did out there, Zeke, but I want to see you do it again and again! What would you say to joining Track and Field for our school?” The coach said with a gleam in his eye. “I can’t say sports are my forte. I just don’t have the time with such a busy schedule on my hands.” “What could you be doing that’s more important than your physical prowess, boy?!” “Vidya games, of course.” His cheeks went beet red after that comment. This guy obviously takes his job a little too seriously, but I told him nothing but the truth. No matter what was developing inside of me, I just didn’t find any enjoyment in sports. If he even tried to force me onto a team, I’d just purposely do bad. Not like he would even notice the abrupt change, considering my history in this class. “Well, that’s a shame. I hope you reconsider, Zeke.” The coach turned away from me, blowing his whistle once again to get everyone’s attention. I really wish that he wouldn’t do that so much. It’s just plain irritating after a while. “Alright, now that suicides are done, you can all give me one lap before basketball. On the double!” The coach barked out before blowing his whistle once again. I sighed out, moving to a brisk jog. I wasn’t really tired from all of our suicides like I usually was, but I didn’t want to leave behind my friends either. Watching them catch up with my idle pace, they finally decided to say something for once instead of looking slack-jawed. “You’re definitely going to have to tell us how you did that,” Anthony demanded. “I didn’t really do anything. It just kinda happened.” “Don’t hold out on us, man. If there’s some kind of secret to getting nerds like us to beat out even the jockiest of jocks, we’re going to take every risk necessary!” Chapter 1 WC ~ 326 / 1,373 Book WC ~ 1,373
  11. My foot bounced off of the ground below me, sending me into a frontal rush. My arms thrusted back and forth as I sped toward the first line. I quickly pivoted on the front of my left foot, turning my body around ahead of time as my digits smacked against the first line. To my surprise, the jocks were not that far behind me. Why were they behind me, of all things? I ran to the starting line, tapping it with my pivoting motion before heading off to the second line. That was when things were really starting to get crazy. My speed seemed to increase by the millisecond as it only took me three seconds to tap at the next line. The athletes were at the halfway point, so I felt like I had a chance in this! I sprinted back to the starting line and tapped it, ready to claim my victory. My feet never even began to fail me as I rushed toward the finish line, tapping it within five seconds. Now even the coach had his eyes on my new prowess, but if he were to ever ask me how the hell I did this, I wouldn’t even be able to tell him. I made my way back to the finish line, but before I could, my feet were swept from underneath me. A bulky jock had tripped me in the middle of my sprint toward the starting line, my body going flying. He had a disgusting smirk on his face, like he was going to be able to win because of that dirty trick. I had a different plan in mind as I pressed the palms of my hands into the gym floor, bouncing off and landing on my feet once again. I gave that athlete a thumbs up as I resumed my run, quickly hitting the starting line with my fingers. Even with the unwanted interference, I had won with time to spare. My friends hadn’t even tried to start up their race, jaws obviously affected by gravity as they were wide open. The coach quickly came up to me, cuffing my shoulder and going in to shake my hand rapidly. He was obviously a very proud man for this, but wasn’t this kind of congratulations a little much? 12. I let off a light sigh at the thought, signaling to them that I knew exactly what they were so distraught over. Surprisingly, as much as I hated this exercise as well, I just had to try and show them that we could overcome some of these jocks if we really tried. I always exerted the greatest confidence when we had to do these things, and because of that, it would rub off on my friends as well. Maybe that’s why people like to hang out with me so much. “Alright, guys. Let’s give it everything we’ve got this time, yeah?” I couldn’t help but clench my fist, smiling wide. “Yeah, we got this,” Phillip chimed in, walking over to the starting line before the coach could even say anything. The rest of us went off to join him, hearing the coach’s orders blaring in our ears while we stretched out our legs, getting a little attention from the jocks. You could just tell from their smug expressions that they believed our exercises were pointless. I was prepared to prove every single one of them wrong, even if I was going to lose today. The coach raised his voice a bit, making sure that the entire male side of the gym heard his commands. “Alright, ladies! Today we’re doing suicides! Get to the starting line and wait for my signal.” He barked before getting to his desk, watching over the lot of us as we prepared for the race ahead. I finished up my stretches before placing my hands on the white starting line, trying my best to ignore the disgusting gestures to my left. One could just tell when they were being made fun of, and boy, was I getting that feeling right about now. Yet I felt a little different than before; my body was tensing up in ways unprecedented. My pupils quickly shrunk, showing off my focus as the coach readied his whistle for an ear-wrenching sound. The metallic instrument sounded off and I was already well on my way. 13. Chapter 1 The Catalyst “Yo, earth to Zeke!” My eyes were blurry as all bloody hell. Where even was I? The last thing I remember was talking with Dusk before I finally fell asleep, but even with that, I had no clue where I could be. No, wait, I did manage to catch the bus this morning. I was never one to be so damned drowsy, but anything can happen these days. My heavy lids lifted open to see the bright sun gleaming out of glass doors, pupils quickly scanning around to take in the environment. Yep, I was already in Gym. I guess I was just a bit too tired to think about my actions. It’s a bit sad when I can do things on autopilot, which only means I’m way too used to this routine of mine. I longed for a change. “Nice to see you’re awake,” Anthony said, laughing a little. That explains who gave me the wake up call. The dangerous trio (Colin, Anthony, and Phillip) surrounded me as I woke up from a semi-slumber. I shook my head lightly, getting my energy back as I jumped off the high point of the bleachers I was on, planting my feet on the ground for a ten outta ten score. Today was gonna be damned good, if I do say so myself. I turned on my feet to look over at my three friends, who looked a bit nervous. It only took me a few seconds or so to realize what the mental fuss was about. Today is Tuesday, meaning we had to do suicides. Suicides are when you run to a line of the gym, touch it, then run back to the start line. You have to keep running back to the lines, the distance only getting farther with each round. Me and my group usually made it in last place, no matter how embarrassed we felt about it. Chapter 1 WC ~ 319 Book WC ~ 319
