The Unkindness of Nishigari

Species: Ravens

Element: Wind

Family Information

On the peak of the highest mountain in the north most part of Yuki no Kuni, exists a frozen wasteland known as the Frosty Crag. This area is thought by most to be an inhospitable place due to the dangerously high winds and massive amounts of snowfall. At the center of this hellish landscape, however, is the village of the Nishigari. The structures in this village are large and circular with a messy, disheveled look to them. These abodes are made entirely of trees that seemed to have been ripped from the ground and packed tightly. Although each one at a distance looks like a pile of sticks that a child might have heaped together, upon closer inspection, you'll notice that they are airtight to keep the wind and snow out and the heat in. At one end of the village, away from all of the structures, is a large mound of frozen carrion. This mound is the stockpile from which the Nishigari feed themselves. The village does not require much in the way of defenses as the weather and winds keeps almost all who wish to enter out. There is stone obelisk in the middle of the structures that has the name of all summoners who hold contracts with them carved into it.

The Nishigari vary in size depending on their age. The youngest of the Unkindness are about one foot in height and could easily rest in the palm of your hand, though they prefer to perch on one's arm or shoulder. The oldest of them have been known to be the size of human structures. Each has the exact same shade of iridescent black feathers though the chest feathers have white markings on them that are unique to the individuals. Their beaks and talons are dexterous enough to manipulate tools with fine precision while also being strong enough to be powerful weapons.

Myths about the Nishigari have been passed down from generation to generation among the people of Yuki no Kuni to the point that nobody believes they are real. The isolationist nature of these creatures helps perpetuate this believe as encounters with humans are very rare. In these stories, the Nishigari are often spoken of as prophets that can foresee one's death and will seek you out when it is close. This has earned them the nickname of Kaze no Yogen-sha among the locals. The Nishigari are very intelligent and patient and will often sit back and watch situations unfold before acting, even if danger seems imminent. This inaction should not be confused with cowardice though as these birds are viciously fierce. They are solitary creatures and do not wish to interact with the world outside of their family. However, if an individual has proven themselves worthy and resourceful enough to find and make it to the village, they will train with them and most likely sign a summoner's contract. Their word is their bond and once a contract has been signed, they will be loyal to them until the summoner dies.

Family Habitat

The Unkindness of the Nishigari live in the Frosty Crag. The only plant life is short scrubby grass that grows in small patches and only during the summer when the permafrost thaws. At the altitude of the Crag, no fauna outside of the Nishigari can be found. The landscape is comprised of rock and ice and not much else. The winds constantly blow and only ever stop about once a year during the summer for three days. This is typically the day that the Unkindness will hunt. Food has to be found elsewhere on the mountain and brought back to the family stockpile where it is hoarded.
