Overview

The Dorobou can be effectively described as thieves. Most of them kleptomaniacs by nature, there is nothing that is safe from their quick hands. They have honed their craft over many generations, incorporating the shinobi jutsu, but have not been around long enough to develop or discover their own specific bloodline traits.

History

The roots of the Dorobou clan are found within several small semi-nomadic families that once roamed the roads. They were scattered and divided until the great visionary Dorobou Kona began unifying many of them through treatises and, later, marriages between the families. In the time of just one generation, Kona had created an alliance between families that, though fragile at the time, would last many years after him. Once brought together, the Dorobou developed the one skill that they all had in common. They had become a clan, not of ninjas, but of thieves.

Over generations, the clan became more unified as they came to share a common history and blood ties became stronger. It eventually grew large enough where the clan could no longer sustain its nomadic ways and was forced to settle in Sunagakure. They lived among the village, but kept much of the culture they had developed while road-bound. They adopted shinobi techniques into their way of life as newer generations trickled through the local Ninja Academy. It was an easy transition, as the secretive ways of the shinobi fit well with the shadowy nature of the thief.

The Dorobou had already been on uneasy terms with surrounding clans to begin with, because of their shady origins. All it took was the sudden disappearance of several powerful forbidden scrolls and they became villains in the public eye. It didn’t take long before the entire clan was run out of the village. What remained of the clan fled the wind country and survived along the roads once more. They eventually found themselves in Otogakure where they have since settled down. Because of this history and the losses from the war against Kumogakure, they are a small clan, but just as skilled as they have always been.

Social Structure

The Dorobou clan is unified by the common history and ancestry like most other clans. Their divisive past has long since been forgotten, and they all carry the same family name. At the same time, they are quite diverse when it comes to politics and other such personal beliefs. Any outsider would be hard-pressed to find a pair of Dorobou who share the same viewpoint on life. As such, it is rather difficult to effectively lead the clan in any single direction, as the current clan head, Kurai, has learned well.

There is also a strange duality that exists when it comes to the idea of ownership within the clan. This is, perhaps, a result of the lifestyle that they live. Either way, no single member sees anything as theirs, or even the clan’s. Anything that comes into a Dorobou’s possession is free for anybody else to take. Of course, that doesn’t mean that material goods aren’t valued.

In fact, it is expected that every clan member have a hidden collection of personal valuables. The locations of these stashes are kept secret even between child and parent. Even these, however, are not ‘owned’ in the same sense as most think, because if another person finds the stash, they are free to take what they want without fear of overarching consequences. It is the person that is being stolen from that is to blame for not keeping their stash well-hidden.

Division of Labor/Skill

Young Dorobou learn the basics of thievery and jutsu in parallel. The less experienced one is, the more generalized one is. But, as the young Dorobou ages, it specializes in one of two main ways.

Those who are physically skilled steal treasures, scrolls items and jewels. These are your more traditional thieves. Well, as traditional as thieves that are also shinobe can be, anyway. These shinobi excel at missions in which they are expected to discretely acquire items of value.

Those who are more skilled in the ways of the mind can be even more dangerous. They don’t learn to steal gold and jewels. They use their Genjutsu to take that which is most guarded: secrets.
