"I see your eyes. I can see how they glance over me and throw away any chance of me being great or even being able to defend myself. I may not be a noble warrior, I may not be some prince. But if you don't get those eyes fixed your nose is going to be as tender as a mince.”

-A tune Chouka toyed With after getting into a fight with a wealthy merchant's son

Appearance

Height: 5'9”

Weight: 160 lbs

Hair: The wandering son of an Innkeeper has allowed his hair to grow out over the last five years and his rebuilding of Kinomi no Toshi. While still kept tidy, it is no longer short, the red-brown hair which was just tufts before now having grown into a regular mane of hair, puffing out in small spikes in the ponytail he regularly keeps it in. As it's grown in length, the reddish brown has only grown richer, and now it looks akin to the color of a red mountain's soil.

Eyes:. Chouka's eyes are best described as 'most of the time a tint somewhere between steel and blue green' this is because the boy's eye color often changes very quickly and visibly with his emotions, from a light joyous blue to a dark color bordering a storm brewed sea, in the furthest extremes. Because the young man is constantly looking around himself, it's not easy short of holding him still, to see the azure orbs, however.

Clothing: Chouka normally wears a pair of fairly long, wide, almost Hakama like shorts, of a disturbingly bright orange color. Both sides of the shorts have pockets akin to cargo pockets right around where they ride his hips. A plain black t-shirt is worn along side of this, most of the time. He also happens to wear a short dark blue padded vest at times.

A not very tight belt, along with a pair of traveling boots, top off his typical clothing, at least at the moment. The vest he wears also happens to have the kanji for 'Amegumo' stitched in orange on the back, very clearly, but even in the time he's had it, he's never realized this.

Topping off his self designed 'uniform' is a Forest Green bandanna which rolled up in a way to make it be wearable as a headband, with the word 'Kou' stitched in thick orange threads. In the past years though, it's been used more as a mouth cover when he's needed to have one.

Physical Description: His life something in between time spent in a monastery reading all the time and doing nearly every chore his father needed assistance with doing, Chouka's got a sizable stature, and is not too skinny, but not too muscular, either. His skin is average colored, neither tan or pale, and his shoulders are at least the only thing about him really 'manly', as they're as broad as they should be for someone his age and height.

Because he's neither too fat, skinny, or muscular, and he's got broad shoulders, Chouka's build is sometimes considered to be 'lanky', and he moves like someone who is, quite often. His posture is either standing up straight, or slouching in a 'I'm slouching because I'm cooler than you!' sort of way, never anything in between.

His face is slightly round, though not so much that it'd be noticeable without his dimples, which are sizable enough to make him often squint when he smiles widely. His nose, likewise, is sort of round, though is slightly 'uneven', as if it's been broken before.

Despite being fairly lanky, his body leans towards being 'stocky', as if his genetics demanded he hold up something like a mountain would. He's lucky he hasn't gotten any scars from all his misadventures, yet.

---

Despite being 'average' before his departure from Ame no Kuni, in the days he has spent rebuilding Kinomi no Toshi, Chouka has gained considerably more muscle tone, now the boy has a build something akin to a runner, despite having wide shoulders.

Beyond that not much has chaned on the boy's build, aside from a few scars from accidents while rebuilding the town or tending crops.

"Stories are important, because without them we can't have knowledge. Without knowledge, we can't have any stability against the flow of time, and without that stability, we can't have hope, we can only be swallowed by the monsoon of infinity. That's why I'm doing what I do, that's why I plan to become a great novelist, and a great chronicler. I will find the great tales of our generation, and I will see a few of them with my own eyes.”

Personality:

Chouka is a dreamer, a hoper. His entire life's work so far has been built on one big, ridiculous dream. He wants to become a legendary novelist and chronicler, he wants to be touched by the world and to touch it. He wants to become something which he is not now, and he will fight tooth, nail, elbow, and knee for it.

He's generally happy enjoying his surroundings and the sounds about him, but as was mentioned before, he is extremely prone to hope for new things, and this lends to an unnerving determination. The same determination which lead Chouka to teach himself Ninjutsu by mere trickery and stealth, the same determination which lead him to rebuild the destroyed town of Kinomi no Toshi, and replant it's fields. It is this dreamer's heart that makes him a good prospect as a leader, but it is also the reason he doesn't want to be and hasn't moved to be. I makes him irrate to notice the bad things in life, and he is more than happy to be grumpy and complain or be sarcastic when he sees bad thing.

He's quick of wit and quick of tongue, but he also stumbles over himself at times, when he's caught unawares of when he sees a girl whom he finds gorgeous [which often happens]. He's also fiercely protective of those whom he has made friends with in Kinomi no Toshi, even though he's slowly feeling the need to leave, because the older people in the village are starting to push against his nerves. Chouka doesn't respond well to authority.

Likes:

Chouka enjoys stories of all sorts, along with histories of all sorts, as he sees them both apart of the same thing.

He also enjoys learning about different aspects of Nindo, as well as practicing it in new ways.

Likewise, he enjoys learning almost anything new, and eating new foods.

He loves playing his Shamisen, along with hearing new types of music, the epics, and the ballads of tradition.

He's quite likely to dig his head into a new book which he runs into that seems like it might be good, or seems mysterious, and he's also quite happy to have read a few of 'The Great Jiraiya-sama's writings!'

He enjoys playing pranks, and imagining things, though he does not often show it.

Likewise, as any young man who called Jiraiya a mentor, he enjoys girls quite a bit, though he is often too shy to do anything other than peek, even when confronted by a pretty girl who thinks he's attractive too.

He is devoted to his father and his family's inn, but feels that he would do better in the long run for his father and himself if he made himself a famous author, because then readers of his works would travel to his family's inn and make them a sizable amount of money.

Having lived in the region he was born in for the past seventeen years, he of course also loves the rain.

Dislikes:

Chores are things which Chouka doesn't particularly like, but over the years he has halted his hate for them, making them simply a dislike.

He has a dislike for unnecessary arguing, to the point that he has been known to simply walk off when people are arguing around him.

Edicts as if he should be told to follow them just because someone else said that's the rules.

Creepy older women. Especially ones who grab his dimples.

People who dislike the Shamisen.

People who don't like to share knowledge, or tell him he talks too much.

Uptight people, especially ninja who think they're better than him just because they're officially ninja.

"Teach me what you will, Inari-sama. I'm tired of being afraid, I want to protect those I love, and what I love. To be able to tell the story of those who would be lost in the masses of time otherwise...”

- Nagauta Chouka, Age 17, To Nara Inari.

Prologue

The wind blows in change. In many people's lives, it's a statement which is used solely as a metaphor, but in the life of the innkeeper of Ame no Kuni's 'Amekaze Inn', it was a verifiable fact. One day, eighteen years ago, a then single and young heir to his family's inn, Nagauta Ontou was gifted by a change in his life via the wind. The rains that so often existed over his homeland once again continued, and he sat in his inn, alone, his eyes alternating from watching the nearby fire in his fireplace, and the door of the inn, which had not been opened at all that day by anyone other than himself.

Then, as the winds razed the village so much that the sound of it whirling forcefully against objects could be heard even over the crackling of his fire, a stunning young woman stumbled in. A young woman with ebony locks like he had never even seen, kept in a peculiar way, long with a bit in braids, which made it shine even more in the firelight from the soaked state it was in.

He tilted his head, asking her if she was okay, and she simply smiled up at him with reddened cheeks, before stumbling into his arms, the young innkeeper having already stood up to help her. After catching her, he tended to her, looking at the beautiful eyes she had, and falling in love instantly.

Time passed, and the young woman who had stumbled into his inn had become a regular resident, living there in happiness off the kindness of Ontou, even going so far to abuse his kindness at times. She toyed with the young innkeeper, and stayed there quite a long while without paying a single ryo.

As time continued to march on, she grew greedy of finding a richer benefactor within the village, or preferably in some other village. She yearned to travel, just as much as her surname, Samayou, would imply.

She would have left then, right then and there, if it had not been for the fact that she collapsed as she was halfway out of the village. The village's medi-nin tested her, and realized two things which would change the nature of the two lovebirds relationship. The first was that she was likely a ninja by trade, her high levels of chakra proved it, as did the fact that she demanded to know what jutsu they were using on her when she awoke from her slumber.

The second was something far more interesting to the innkeeper. The wandering woman was with child, likely four months pregnant, and from the chakra levels within the child, it was likely her's and his, because it had a different and far less potent chakra pattern than her's, and had traces of the same crippling chakra pattern which existed within every member of Onsou's family for at least the past four generations, and was the reason they had went into the innkeeping business.

It took two weeks of hospital time for Samayou Maji to fully recover from the attempt at traveling in such a condition. When that time was over, Onsou whisked her off to the inn, and he took care of her every need, actually going so far as to try to make her an 'honest woman', by asking her to marry him.

She simply smiled at him, realizing as he took care of her that he really did love her, and that she should try to be happy with the fact that he did. She calmed her urges and spent time with him, loving him the best she could, until the child which they together had created was born.

A child given the name 'Nagauta Chouka', by his father, and deemed with a slight bit of irritation 'Nagauta Amagumo', by his mother. Both disagreed on the other's name, and in the end both parents called the child both names, using the name they had picked more often than not, and through a stroke of miracle, or more likely their new born child's natural intelligence, he responded to both names.

The child, known by members of the village as 'Nagauta Amagumo Chouka', quick to learn things, interacting with the patrons of the inn even as a child, being spoiled by many of the kunouchi of his native village because they found the child's naivety and precocious curiosity very cute, along side his looks, which favored both his parents, who were both thought by many of the villagers to be 'attractive.'

In some children, being spoiled by the patrons of such a place, brought presents and sweets from time to time, would ruin them, but in Chouka, it simply balanced out things. His mother, after naming him Chouka, and nursing him until he could eat solid food, had as little to do with her son as possible, truly deeming him a rain cloud on her life, because he was the reason she was forced to stay here, obliged to live with his father and he, simply because his father loved her so and Chouka was her offspring.

His intelligence had him learning to speak by the age of three, had him reading, writing, and playing the Shamisen (his family's favored instrument, especially as it was a favorite of the customers), by the age of four. He often inquired about the world even then, and when he asked about what shinobi-nin were, he was told frankly, without his father restricting him from knowing.

His intelligence was his downfall, over ever. If he had not understood and been able to communicate so at such an early age, he would not have been exposed to his mother and father, and their arguments. Chouka's mother Majis complaints and screams about how Chouka and Onsou were both blights on her life, and how she would rather be traveling the world. How horribly she hated them and how stupid she thought their way of life to be. Onsou, likewise, speaking of how their son was a blessing, and the only blight on their family was her instability and dislike for her own child, on top of her lust for material possessions and attention from rich men, whom she lusted after even in front of Onsou.

Either from his inability to understand, or out of some natural personality quirk, Chouka fled from their arguments, crying in a corner of the inn's lobby quite often when it happened. It was rare at first, but as the years went by, it started to happen more and more, and the insults came more and more, Maji even saying that Onsou should kiss her feet and beg her for forgiveness whenever he disobeyed her whims, because she was more than him as he could never become a shinobi-nin.

By the time Chouka was six years old, he would simply walk away from the home, hiding in whatever quiet place he could find within the village. This inevitably led him to the village's library, where he met his first friends; books.

He would check out three or four at a time, and though he would spend time with patrons and his father when ever things were normal, whenever the fights between his father and mother began again, he would stick his nose in a book. He began to read about all sorts of things, the histories of the nations of the world and its peoples, the adventures of legendary people, and eventually, the story of 'Naruto' (the first story written by the Sannin Jiraiya).

He fell involve with books, and quickly with the stories of 'Jiraiya' which he could get his hands on. It made him wonder even more about ninja, and as he continued to read stories like the 'Naruto' story, and that one itself, he gained interest in learning to become a ninja. He even began to try to write his own novels, failing drastically because he could not think of a thing. His brain seemed to be wired to prevent him from creating fictional accounts.

He was around the age of seven when he asked this of his father, and the answer was simple.

"No, Chouka, it is too dangerous for you to become a shinobi-nin.” The real motive behind his father's thoughts were only partially about his safety, and the young man could realize this even then so he came to the decision that in front of his father, he would act as if his only interests were to just be a mundane innkeeper, just like his father.

When his father was busy with business or dealing with suppliers, however, it was a total different story. Chouka practiced with manipulating his chakra after checking out a few books and scrolls from the library, along with listening in on classes at the shinobi academy of Amegakure no Sato. As he gained more skill with his chakra manipulation, and his physical abilities grew in part from his chores and his secret training, he began to follow the genin teams as they talked to one another, and even listen in on the lectures their jounin gave him. Slowly, over a couple of years, he began to learn quite a bit about the art of the ninja.

He practiced with patience, and never got greedy with the knowledge he gained, so that his secret was kept fairly hidden. As he grew older, and the kunouchi of his native village continued to frequent his family's inn, as many shinobi-nin had since its inception many years ago, he began using his looks to influence them into getting intoxicated on Sake enough to make a bit of money for his inn, and get something he valued even more, free information on the art of shinobi-nin.

Years continued to pass, making Chouka become a favorite of some of the girls in his village, though never anything more than to flirt with, what with him being a non-ninja. He continued to work diligently at his double life, practicing his caligraphy and his skill with the Shamisen publicly, because his father saw nothing wrong with either skill.

It was about the time he turned fourteen when the invasion of the civilized Shinobi Countries happened, the Country of Lightning's forces overwhelming the might of every nation in its path. Ame no Kuni was no different, and within the week, those shinobi-nin that survived almost all turned into members of the NCIA, or joined the small resistance within their region. Fights broke out, as happened in every other nation, but things went on for Chouka. The influx ninja from other countries only excited him, especially with the fact that his family's inn was a favorite of the village.

Slowly, and carefully, he continued to gain information and skill in the arts he practiced, and because he did not wish to wish his life for someone else's gain, he continued to hide his training, and only gain information with extreme caution, just as he had throughout the last ten years, because he couldn't seem to lie.

The years passed without him making any real friends, and growing to dislike arrogant ninja, but by the time he was seventeen, he decided it was time to begin his adventures. He hasn't left his home yet, or told his father that he planned to, but he is ready.

Chapter 1: Departure

Roughly at the same time the siege of Nigiyakashufu was occurring, Chouka was finishing the last moments of his preparations. He believed in his heart of hearts that the NCIA was on borrowed time, and as such the biggest determent to his travels were gone. While it would be harder to get access to individual countries he might travel to now, he knew there'd be less ability to track him with any skill.

So he waited, gathering information and tending his father's store. From a trio of girls which frequented his family's inn, he found out that his forecasts had come true. His father was gone on business, but would return the next day, so Chouka did what he had been steeling himself to do for months, and wrote his father a letter, packing his stuff, and slipping off in the dead of night over the walls of Amegakure. He didn't know when he'd return to his hometown, for days or months or years, but he didn't feel afraid. His body trembled with excitement as he traveled through Ame no Kuni, and in no time he found himself picking up some food in a village, and picking up something entirely unplanned. A man known as Inari, whom Chouka noticed stealing from a merchant. A man who -forced- friendship onto Chouka, and whom Chouka had a bubbling irritation for mixed in with respect for.

They ate, and then went to a co-ed public bath, where Chouka had an accidental launch when he was trying to step into the pool. He ended up in the breasts of a young lady, and after discussion and her cooing over the boy, he and Inari found out that she and her friends were Amegakuran Shinobi-nin, and were moving to protect the country, scouting it and setting up boundaries to stop incoming refugees or worse.

And so Chouka made some of his first friends, before the quint retired to an inn, and Chouka slept hardily. The next morning the left the village and Ame no Kuni entirely, accompanied by the girls. They headed towards Hi no Kuni, where Chouka marveled at the forest green about and the surroundings, where he marveled at the lack of rain every few hours.

Eventually they came upon the ruins of a place Inari had known and loved in days before, Kinomi no Toshi. Inari, having expected a town there, quickly reformed his idea and told Chouka to gather materials so they could begin to train there and they could camp out.

Chouka did, but also began to stumble upon the story of the place, and slowly resolved to help heal the wounds of war, and bring back life to this place which had been devastated so.

Chapter 2: From Skeletons, Flesh

Chouka stuck with his want, his twinge of a dream, and rebuilt Kinomi no Toshi brick by brick, seed by seed. After two years of working nearly every day and training nearly every day, there was a good harvest, and after a travel or two to merchants, settlers from other places in Hi no Kuni, and even refugees from other countries, began to settle into the village with Chouka's blessing, helping rebuild what was lost, and helping bring in the crops.

Three years of this work has passed, and the town is restored, Chouka feels content in heart, but the twinges of wanderlust abrush on his being. He knows the town is living once again, and while honored by the new settlers, he does not know if he can stay there for much longer, why run from the life of an innkeeper for the life of a farmer and trader?

The time and the focus on rebuilding has stunted Chouka's growth in nindo, but he has learned many other things. He has become more complete, even if he does not yet know how to defend himself and the things he loves as much yet.

Annendum 6: Character Connections

The Earth; Family

Nagauta Ontou [Father] - Nagauta Ontou tried to do the best for his son as he could, but he was too grounded in the present and rooted in the past to notice the dreams of the future. While he generally loved his only son, the stress of his business and the often-times heart break given to him on the part of his 'wife', Samayou Maji, made him harder on Chouka than he meant to be.

Ontou has absolutely no skill in any battle arts, though he is famously good at making Kake Sboa, and is also an innkeeper, chef, and musician of proficient skill.

Samayou Maji [Mother] - Chouka never knew his mother well, and that's the way he'd rather it be. From the time he was in her womb waiting to be birthed, she called him a burden, a raincloud on her life. She was a free spirit, a wind brushing across the mountains, and it was not her way to stay in the same place for a long amount of time, even if she came back to visit.

She regularly treated both Chouka and Ontou like crap during Chouka's childhood, and the fights she started between herself and Ontou are the reason Chouka retreated into books. While he can't bear to say it, part of Chouka hates his mother with all the venom of a cobra.

The Sky & Sunshine; Friends, Comrades, & Lovers

Nara Inari [sensei] - Inari was the first Sensei Chouka has had, and truly the only one to this point. While the two have a lot of similar traits, the often clash because of the two of them's individual hang-ups from their pasts. Even now, Chouka doesn't know Inari's past, but he knows that he feels Inari as a sort of foster-uncle, and he would wound a person without hesitation if they threatened Inari.

Nami [Crush] - Nami was a girl whom Chouka met in the strangest of ways, by catapulting into her breasts by slipping. A generally content and happy girl, the two clicked quickly, and something about Chouka seemed to make her particularly attracted to him, though it might just be his skill with a Shamisen.

He considers her two teammates friends as well, but he can't rightly remember their names.
