Village Hidden in the North Pole [Ikiryo Uta* vs Yoshino Hayate]

Village Hidden in the North Pole

Nanukazuki-kumi | Round 2

In the cozy cottage of the Village Hidden in the North Pole, the site of every good cheer and happiness that only appeared once a year, it was time to give out gifts. Uta was feeling a little nervous today, as he had never recovered his eyes and instead interacted with the world through percise sonar.  He had picked out an exotic hair styling set for his friend Hayate.  Uta had done careful research on the product and was so good at hearing, he could detect letters based on the way ink was etched on paper.  Unfortunatley, due to bad translation from Oni no Kuni, "Hair that you'll never have to worry about again!" meant going bald.  Hayate returned from the bathroom sporting a cool chrome dome and livid as all hell.

Hayate is going to love this. I just know it! Uta patted himself on the pack in a congratulatory gesture, so certain was he of his perfect choice that the very idea that something could go wrong never even flashed past his mind. Uta reminisced to the sound of cold, arctic winds blowing through Hayate's hair, the divine resonance echoing through his senses. They'd never talked about it, but Uta could tell Hayate treated his hair with the same care and respect he treated his weapons. The soft and well tended nature of the hair caused it to vibrate differently to less well tended hair, and given his exception senses Uta was one of the few people in the world gifted enough to appreciate it.

That said, Uta had never been one for giving gifts before, his vibrosenses were good, but a sudden blizzard could disorient him beyond recovery, so he was unable to make the trip to Santagakure alone. His penchant for staying in the hospital meant that it was rare he had what anyone else his age would call friends, and so every year when the festive time rolled around it was Uta's curse to remain behind. But this year he had found a kindred spirit, and over the past few months they had bonded, forging a friendship unlike any Uta had known before. When the offer came for Uta to accompany Hayate to the hidden village for the festival season, Uta was elated. Their journey had been jovial, and when Uta had stole away to get Hayate's present, he was sure Hayate was doing the same. The two were just that in sync.

Uta couldn't wait to feel the look on Hayate's face when he emerged from the bathroom, already he was picturing it in his mind's eye. Today was going to be a day to remember for the rest of Uta's life.

"UTAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!! YOU BLIND JACKASS!!!"

30b3d78a8dd45cbd6a481669281744c1e1f58a83

That just about summed up Hayate's feelings. The bald youth kicked open the bathroom of the cottage as though he were the ANBU black ops, prepped to take down a perp. The sheer rage that coursed violently through his lithe figure gruesomely transformed his face to match it, from shadowy twitching eyes to exaggeratedly sharpened teeth he bared in Uta's direction. The shimmery gleam of light that reflected off the top of his smooth cranium would lessen the tension faster than it built up for most onlookers. Baldness did no justice for the Konohagakure native, possessing little to none of the sort of rugged masculinity that could pull off such a style. He was too pretty and young for that nonsense.

"M-My precious hair...!!! What kind of basic bimbo is supposed to take me serious with this shit?!" Exclaimed Hayate as he pitifully pointed towards his hairless crown. His priorities were a little screwy, but that was honestly just classic Hayate behavior. While the two shinobi managed to maintain some semblance of a friendship, the weapon specialist would often revert to thinking about himself, especially when it came to money and material possessions. The gift-giving festivities that took place around this time in the Village Hidden in the North Pole always left a sour taste in Hayate's mouth. Of course, the greedy bastard was always down for taking some free shit off someone's hands, but giving to somebody else? He succumbed to violent allergic reactions out of his sheer cheapass ways.

During the time it took Uta to vanish, likely acquiring the hair styling kit in that window of time, Hayate came upon a merchant stand selling some rather fashionable pair of sunglasses. He lacked a pair after being slapped by some uptight wench who just so happened to dislike being groped. How the fuck was he supposed to know? In the exchange, his previous shades broke and simply remained on the lookout for a replacement since then. And there they were, pristine and beautiful, capturing his eye from a distance. Unfortunately, the Konoha-nin's pesky conscience rode his ass since the day started about buying his good friend Uta a gift and it persisted even more so while he ogled the bitchin' shades. Soon, an idea struck as dickish as it may have been. He purchased the sunglasses for Uta, who obviously - in Hayate's mind - wouldn't take the glasses given his inability to even use them. Thankfully, his rather crappy conscience quieted down with the half-assed attempt at appeasing it and with that, Hayate was well on his way to receiving two gifts for the price of one! ...So much for that.

"You do this to me after I went out of my way to get these shades for you?! I'mma fucking throttle you!!!" Roared the bald ninja as he flashed through a number of hand seals and conjured forth a rather basic Ninjutsu, announcing its name as he did so. "Bunshin no Jutsu!"

Cost: 5x Chakra
Effect: This technique may be used in the Setup Phase or Main Phase. When determining the cost of this technique 'x' is considered to be the number of 'Clones' created by the user and may never be greater than 4. 'Clones' have 1 Health and 1% of the user's other statistics. 'Clones' are not physical, and may not use items, techniques or attack during their turn. The user of this technique gains +20 Evasion or +20 Accuracy for every 'Clone' on the battlefield. The effects of 'Clones' may be ignored by any character with heightened senses (i.e; Byakugan, Path of the Sensor, Inuzuka Smell Tracker, etc). This technique may be used in the Setup Phase 1 time per battle.
Description: A technique that most students are required to be proficient in before they can graduate from the academy, the Bunshin no Jutsu is the most basic of the myriad of clone techniques that exist in the world. By properly molding their chakra, the user is capable of creating near perfect replicas of themselves. Unlike most bunshin jutsu, the basic clone technique does not produce physical clones but creates something more akin to a projected image, which is a real image that has no form. The Clone Technique is considered an E-Ranked jutsu, and is not very powerful, but with practice and ingenuity many shinobi have come to use it in masterful ways. Most often stalling by hiding out among their clones, or setting themselves up for a strong offensive.

Uta was taken aback. When Hayate had emerged, no longer did the soft, pulsing tones of his magnificent mane echo throughout his senses, but instead it was a dull, empty pang. Uta had felt this a few times before, and it could mean only one thing. True hairlessness. Not a close shave, not a steadily growing bald patch, the dome was now chrome. Uta, perhaps blinded (ha) by his good intentions, had cost his friend one of his greatest treasures. To make matters worse, Hayate had been kind enough to bring a gift to Uta, glasses to hide the pits where his eyes once were. It was a thoughtful gift, that touched on one of his deepest insecurities, and showed the level to which Hayate had come to understand him, and the level to which Uta had failed his friend.

Unexpectedly though was his reaction, perhaps embaldened by this most unfortunate of events, Hayate threw up a wall of clones, as if taking a battle stance. Uta didn't quite know how to respond. Surely, he believed, Hayate knew that his senses were heightened beyond that of normal humans, and such a technique would do nothing to deter or distract Uta. Perhaps his friend was just making a scene, trying to vent a little rightly warranted stress. With that thought in mind, Uta knew that he had best calm his friend down, throw a little sound his way and just give him a good shake. Maybe that would help balance things out, and they could sit down like buddies again and talk over this unfortunate accident, and come to an amicable solution. Uta's hand shot to his wrist, adjusting the settings on the device implanted in his arm. "Hayate, I can see that you are stressed, and indeed a little angry. I have no intention of hurting you, I just need you to snap out of it, get your head back together and we'll get through this together!"

With a pained expression painted across his face, Uta readied himself to face whatever was coming his way, hoping his initial salvo would be enough to dissuade his friend from continuing down this path.

Though Hayate summoned forth the horde of bald dopplegangers, which further agitated the adolescent, he wasn't prepared for the heavy strike made against him. The sound that reverberated throughout his body was much more potent than he could've ever imagined, having noted examples of Uta's use of Sound Ninjutsu. It always seemed fairly weak, given its lack of visual intimidation, despite clear demonstrations of its potential destructiveness. Nevertheless, the weapon specialist hadn't bothered to acknowledge its might nor that Uta had the gall to use it against him.

As he gradually recovered from the aftermath of the blow, which unfortunately left a majority of his body numb to any sensation, he squared himself up against his friend turned enemy and pulled out two kunai, point one in his direction. "And then you grow the balls to steal on me too Uta? All right then, bring the war!" Roared Hayate as he quickly closed what little distance there was between himself and Uta, circling around the Oto-nin as he did so. With his kunai at the ready, the monochrome dome spun around his target, flailing his kunai strategically in hopes to inflict some nasty wounds. Unfortunately, the numbness throughout his body wouldn't allow him to forget the affliction, his kunai slipping through his fingertips like butter and dropping to the cottage floorboarding. Such a setback was hardly a concern for the weapon user, utilizing his great speed and dexterity to whip out a second pair of kunai knives for a second attempt at slashing his opponent.

A direct hit!  Uta hoped that would prove to be enough, the attack was far from his most dangerous, but the aftershocks it sent through the body had caused foes to second guess their foe on more than one previous occasion. Hayate showed the grit for which Uta admired him though, and even though from the distance they were at Uta could effortlessly sense the vibrations travelling through his friend's body, he still drew his weapons and charged. Uta was dismayed, he had hoped a big lingering display would be enough, and he was emphatically proven wrong. Hayate had declared war. This must be how the heroes of old felt, the cycle of friendship, betrayal and inevitable conflict. Perhaps Uta and Hayate would be one of the lucky few who broke the cycle? Uta could only hope.

Hayate's speed, as the Otogakure gennin was all too aware, monstrously outclassed his own. With barely more than a blink, the gap was closed and Hayate was at his throat, a swirling mass of kunai. Uta staggered back, even with his senses as keenly focused as they were, an attack of this speed was nigh impossible to predict. However, Hayate's shot went wide as a shiver went through his body, the kunai that had only a fraction of a moment earlier spun towards Uta now clattered uselessly off the ground. The distraction was only momentary, with a flash Hayate was armed again and dove forth to unleash the same spinning strike. Uta was smarter than that though, and the air pressure device installed in his arm provided ample protection against vicious attacks. Uta stepped back and threw his implanted arm up, the kunai striking the metal rings that dotted his right arm, causing a lot of pain but only minor lacerations along the arm. At this stage, it looked like speed aside Uta held the upper hand here, and he ducked down with his arm still extended, the palm aiming directly for Hayate's neck. This was a killing technique, but only if it was maintained. Uta only planned on using it as a scare tactic, to convince his foe to back off and let calm minds resume dialogue to reach an agreement.

"I'm sorry Hayate...Resonance Cascade!" A violent burst of supersonic energy erupted from Uta's arm, the rings installed hissing as they vented air to generate the insane pitch required for the technique. Inside, part of Uta hoped this would miss, that Hayate would be safe. But at the back of his mind, another voice spoke up. Hayate was from Konoha, Uta from Oto. Their villages held a historic rivalry. Perhaps this was destiny. Perhaps one of them would have to die here for fate to be appeased. The dark voice in Uta knew which of them that had to be.

OOC: Jesus, Numb is a nightmare on rolls for weapon attacks :glare:. Also its somewhat confusing given the interaction with small weapons, but I'm going with the worst case scenario with them for the time being. Note, rolls were made in reference to the small weapons, but I'd re-read Numb's effect in which all weapons 'equipped' are dropped and not just the one that failed.

"Shit!" Hayate exclaimed at the result of his attack. Though the Konoha-nin was eager to draw some serious blood, given the unforgivable actions of his former friend, his assault was diminished thanks to the device strapped to the Oto-nin's arm. He was vaguely aware of its employment in the execution of the Sound Ninjutsu Uta utilized, but he hadn't known it was sturdy enough to be used as a shield. That was foolish, Hayate scowled himself. It was difficult to not underestimate the peerless young man before him, regardless of his ability to see shit through vibrations or whatever mumbo jumbo Uta had prattled on about. Still, he knew the boy succeeded in becoming a ninja in the first place for a reason, so he had no choice but to acknowledge that he was indeed a threat. Who else but a menace to society would defile a man's hair in such a way?!

Amidst his rampant thoughts, Hayate had little time to effectively react to the traitor's secondary assault despite his superior speed. As much as he shuffled his feet accordingly to dash away from the oncoming hand that previously rendered his body completely numb, contact was made. Skidding away a second too late, Hayate ceased after sufficient distance was placed between them. He placed the kunai into the holster at his hip, as if doing so mechanically, and reached towards the back of his neck without taking an eye off his assailant. That was strange. It didn't appear as though anything happened. Had I escaped? No, I'm sure I felt contact. Either it didn't take because contact needed to be maintained or there's some other fuckery going on... I'd bet my sweet ass on the latter.

Whatever the case may have been, there were no apparent effects from the offset, prompting Hayate to simply press the attack once again before whatever Uta had done to him took. While he was outpacing the Sound shinobi by a fair margin, it was time for Hayate to knock thing's up a notch. With dazzling speed, Hayate turned towards Uta's exposed backside and dipped both hands in the ninja pouch along his thigh and pulled out a series of weapons, totaling four. Perhaps known mostly by those well versed in weapon use or with plenty of experience, they would be recognized as weapons originating from other countries. From Kirigakure no Sato were the Pronged Kunai, an atypical knife with inward curve that would prove sufficient to drawing even more blood from his opponent. From Sunagakure no Sato were the Ring Shuriken, a somewhat unusual and circular weapon designed in such a way that it has a chance of returning to its wielder upon being thrown. For a weapon user like Hayate, unique weapons like these were a necessity, willingly demonstrating their usefulness as he made an attempt to throw the four weapons. Unfortunately, the numbness Uta afflicted upon Hayate still rearing its ugly head causing each of the held small weapons to slide out of his hands, their metallic steel nature clinging upon striking the ground. However, not unlike before, he maintained his momentum, perhaps even further increasing it as he blinked behind Uta in a moment's notice.

Reaching into the pouch upon his leg, Konoha's Rising Star pulled out a compact windmill shuriken, a weapon hailing from his village. Only a single snap of his wrist was needed to unfold the folded weapon and off it went soaring towards the Ikiryo. Hopefully, unbeknownst to his target, Hayate had actually withdrawn two compact windmill shuriken and utilized the classic Shadow Shuriken Technique, hiding the second shuriken in the first's shadow. But that wasn't all folks! The ninja clad in black-and-white reached once again to the pouch strapped to his leg, pulling out two shuriken once more. However, they were different than the previous two, one less so. One, a standard Windmill Shuriken, which Hayate unfolded with a single hand not unlike those before it, while the other a larger-than-average shuriken. The manner in which he would toss these two great sized weapons would differ with his prior attack, flinging the two in such a manner that they would take on a much more curved trajectory, trailing significantly slower behind the shuriken before it. The icing on the cake came immediately after throwing the large weapons; a third that practically doubled even their size, which the weapon specialist retrieved from the pack strapped to his back. It, too, was folded, but still held a considerable size even so. The Kite Shuriken, whose tremendous height and length rivaled those of Hayate's own body, was grasped by the inner ring in its center and similarly heaved Uta's way, catching up with the two dissimilar shuriken. The shinobi strove to complete this task a second time, but he could only fight through the numbness for so long.

Performing Body Flicker Technique:

Spoiler

Shunshin No Jutsu | Body Flicker Technique | 瞬身の術 I
Type: Ninjutsu [Void]
Rank: Genin
Cost: 50 Chakra
Effect: This technique may be performed in the Response Phase or the Setup Phase;

Response: This technique may be performed in the Response Phase as a Free Action. The user of this technique increases their Evasion statistic by +50 during the turn that this technique is used. (Dodge rolls made during this turn must mention this technique.) This technique has a 5x% chance to fail, with 'x' being equivalent to the number of unresolved attacks targeting the user. This technique may be performed 2 times per battle in the Response Phase.

Setup: The user of this technique increases their Accuracy statistic by +50 during the turn that this technique is used. The user of this technique may not perform another technique in the Setup Phase for 2 turns. This technique may be performed 2 times per battle in the Setup Phase.

Role Play Effect: The user of this technique may reduce the required post-length when Traveling by 10% when performing this technique outside of battle.
Description: One of the basic techniques taught to most students during their time at the academy. The Body Flicker Technique is considered an extremely versatile ability, and is one of the most widely used general shinobi skills. The jutsu itself is a high-speed movement ability that uses chakra to temporarily vitalize the body, allowing movement that is nearly untraceable to the naked eye. The user often disappears from the field of their opponent’s vision in a puff of smoke, as a means to further distract their path of escape. Though Shunshin has many applications, its most common use is in evading hazardous attacks.

Performing Shadow Shuriken Technique w/ Compact Windmill Shuriken:

Spoiler

Shadow Shuriken Technique | Kage Shuriken No Jutsu
Type: Taijutsu
Rank: Gennin
Cost: 20 Stamina
Damage: 2x
Effect: When calculating the Damage of this technique 'x' is equivalent to the damage dealt by 1 Small Weapon. This technique deals 2 strikes and both strikes must target the same target. The second strike of this attack is considered a Dynamic Trap with its conditions already met. 2 Small Weapons of the same type must be used to perform this technique. When applying statistical modifiers, this technique is treated as a 'Ranged Weapon' attack. This technique may be used 1 time per battle.
Description: The Kage Shuriken Jutsu has been taught to young ninja for years, both as a practice to enhance one's timing when attacking and as a method for attacking with subterfuge. To perform this attack, the user must throw two fuma shuriken shuriken, the first toss being overt and obvious, and the second being almost imperceptible. To perform this attack successfully, the user hides their second shuriken within the shadow of the first, leaving the target open to the attack, even if the first shuriken is deflected.

OOC: Just a note, the air pressure device is implanted inside Uta's arm, not on the outside, it just has exhaust ports that are metal rings I often block with. :)

Uta could tell fairly easily there was two shuriken coming, it was a simple trick, one that relied on an opponent only seeing one and thus only dodging the first. Unfortunately for Hayate, Uta didn't need to see, so such simple tricks would have no effect on him. Unfortunately for Uta, that still didn't help his body move anywhere near as fast as Hayate's did, and this attack was no exception. The first shuriken slammed through Uta's shoulder, the second catching him in the side as he spun from the impact of the first. They were not pleasant attacks to be hit with, that much was certain. The metallic stars bit through his robes and tore flesh, causing lingering pain that was going to bother Uta for some time. Furthermore, it appears the effort of trying to avoid the incoming attacks had aggravated the wounds he had sustained earlier, as they now bled moderately. It was nothing like the bleeding he could inflict on a foe, but if the leaking blood got inside his favoured weapon that could cause further problems down the track. Not to mention the lost vitality would surely take it's toll on him soon, he knew all to well that defences were useless against attacks which left the foe bleeding. Hayate too would soon feel this, as his body was still reeling from Uta's previous attack and struggling to keep hold of the weapons, the bleeding in his throat was due to start any second now.

Uta was unwilling to go easy at this stage, someone would stem the bleeding but Uta had to strike hard and fast, incapacitate his companion before he took too much damage himself. Although Hayate's attacks individually were little more than an annoyance when they struck, the sheer volume with which he was outputting them was leaving an increasingly deadly toll on Uta's body. Uta had a risky technique, one that would almost certainly reduce Hayate's attacks to almost nothing, but it lacked the surety of his other moves. It was a gamble he had to take though, a number of shuriken that Hayate had thrown were still in the air, curving towards him. Uta wasn't confident he could dodge them, his previous attempts had show how ineffective he was facing Hayate's ranged attacks, but what he could do was help guide Hayate into not going all out with them.

Sighing, Uta switched his implanted device to it's secret function, and began to play a chakra laced melody of soft, calming notes. In it he wove ideas of friendship, of camaraderie, of good memories and the importance of staying together. It was his first foray into genjutsu, the Resonance Charm technique. Uta's skill with it was lacking, for he had only recently developed it, but on the off chance Hayate didn't block his ears in time, this was going to be a game changer.

Hayate only had a moment to celebrate his success in striking the nefarious, hair stealer before a sensation began to well up inside Hayate's throat. A hand reflexively smacked against his mouth, feeling the liquid pooling into his mouth forcing him to throw up. Instead of the familiar stream of vomit expelling from his gullet, it was blood. The crimson fluid trickled out of the opening spaces around his enclosed palm, only for Hayate to remove the hand to allow the blood to expunge from his mouth as it desired considering it was obstructing his windpipe. After a fit of coughing, followed by wiping any lingering blood from his mouth, Hayate would undergo another round of sound-based dirty tricks at the hands of his former comrade. The rhythmic melody composed by the Sound shinobi would tug at the young man's heart strings, forcibly engulfing him in feelings of companionship and togetherness that the two shared over the past couple of months. Hayate could not deny that they shared something great, but the rage locked within the Konoha youth could not be quelled. While certainly entranced by the sweet sounds of Ikiryo Uta, Hayate still strove to bash his face in with a flurry of punches, albeit while pulling said punches.

He had dreaded it, and with good reason. Though he could in theory predict the path of the oncoming projectiles, Hayate moved to close the gap between them, perhaps unperturbed by Uta's genjutsu. He would either have to take the shurikens head on and hold his ground against the melee strikes or plan to avoid the shurikens but leave himself open to a melee barrage. Speed once again went against Uta, and it turned out neither of those options were on the table with the time he wasted considering them. The three shuriken, all wildly different from one another, slashed across the boy's chest and arms, leaving painful red trails in his clothes. Then, before Uta had time to ready himself, Hayate was upon him. The strikes were soft, clearly the spell had worked and Hayate was holding back, but even holding back those punches still added up to a fair few bruises. Eventually Uta found his tempo and brought his hand up to catch Hayate's, blocking his foe's strike before throwing himself backwards and with grace that astounded even himself, Uta avoided the final blow.

He was bloodied though, Uta could see. His technique had worked and Hayate was beginning to choke on the blood welling up inside of him. However, this was the kind of strike one could recover from if the pressure wasn't applied with force, and Uta's own reserves of strength were not infinite. One of them would fall sooner or later, and the bleeding along Uta's own arm hadn't ceased, causing him to worry about how much longer he could hold out. "Hayate, it doesn't have to be this way. We can end this before it goes too far!" Uta's words were sincere, but even blind though he was he could sense the unmistakable rage boiling off his friend. There was no room for diplomacy. His final bid to win his friend over had failed, even entranced Hayate's fury burned through the music, crashing into Uta like a hurricane. If Uta still retained tear ducts, he would surely be crying as he re-adjusted his air pressure device once again. "I am so sorry..."

With a remorseful sigh, Uta fired another point-blank burst of supersonic energy at Hayate's throat. It was a cruel technique, and one that burned Uta inside to use. But what choices did he have left? The gennin could find no answers to that question, though it haunted him greatly.

Though Hayate managed to deliver his barrage of attacks, with most connecting successfully thanks to his superior speed, but the collection of blood in his throat continued to grow. Amid the series of violent gagging and coughing noises, the weapon user eventually expelled the blood from his mouth, regaining the ability to breathe again before it was all over for him. Uta certainly wasn't pulling any of his own punches, despite his half-assed claims at being apologetic. Even as the bald youth barely clung to life with his airway constricted by blood at the hands of Uta's Ninjutsu technique, the Sound-nin repeated the formidable attack once again while Hayate's guard was down. It didn't matter how fast the Rising Star was if he was preoccupied with not dying, his feeble attempt at dodging going up in smoke. Once again, the burst of soundwaves into his throat had no notable effect from the start of its execution, but Hayate knew what was coming. It would almost surely be the end of him if he bleed anymore.

There was little choice for the Konoha shinobi except to resume his relentless assault against the traitorous Uta, retrieving a large volume of small weapons from the holsters and pouches that held his arsenal. Hayate's speed remained considerable despite his mounting injuries, running literal circles around the eyeless fiend as he tossed shuriken, kunai and senbon from all sides. After the volley of thrown weapons, Hayate retreated rearward, completing the series of attacks with two balls that, when thrown, would explode into a hailstorm of blades and shrapnel and fury. Certainly, the vengeful ninja couldn't muster the full strength both he and Uta knew existed within his lithe figure, due to the lingering effects of the Ikiryo's crappy musical number, but he would go down swinging, even with death on the prospect.

Description: This weapon is an unconventional one often deployed by the Iwagakure Explosive Corps. It is a small ball filled with tightly-packed explosive powder with several blades protruding from it. When thrown, the Dagger Ball detonates and shoots its blades and shrapnel in many directions. Given its relatively small size, the ball is often used in clusters. While the tool was made famous by Iwagakure, it has since been seen outside of the Tsuchi no Kuni's borders.

Oh...

That was the sum total of thought Uta could compose before the first barrage struck him. Three more shuriken slashed his torso, and then a kunai plunged itself into Uta's left leg. Uta's senses kept him aware of what Hayate was doing while he reeled from this first attack, but the gap between their speed felt like it was growing wider, and before he could mount a counterattack a second wave of attacks struck. Two explosives detonated around him, but thankfully he he escaped the worst of the blast. That did nothing to protect him from the cloud of razor sharp shrapnel that peppered him from both sides, leaving rows of metal spikes jutting out from his flanks, legs and arms. Then, to add insult to injury two long, fine needles struck him in the neck, and Uta could barely bring himself to stay upright. Hayate may have been charmed, but these weapons did the bulk of the work themselves, it mattered little how much heart was put into them. Then, Uta noticed that the barely recovered wounds along his implanted arm sprung to life with blood once more, either a final lingering effect of the blow he was struck earlier or aggravation from the immense volume of metal that had found its way into his body.

Shaking with pain and anger, Uta shook the last vestiges of doubt from his mind. The next stage of his earlier technique was about to kick in, the fear. Uta knew that fear could stop a man dead in his tracks, and to combine that was the uncontrollable shaking and numbness of his Impact Stutter, hopefully Hayate would be left unable to mount a counter while his throat filled with blood. It wasn't the most honourable victory, but honour was rarely pride of place in the fighting styles of Otogakure natives. Uta quickly checked to ensure no errant metal spines had damaged his implant, then shifted the settings and dived forward. He swung himself sideways at the last second, hoping that a quick feint would help his attack land. He hadn't had much trouble striking Hayate until now, but Uta knew that he was running out of strength to fight, and hoped the same applied to Hayate. Whatever happened over the next few seconds would no doubt decide the fate of this encounter. As he passed by his former companion's left side, Uta spun in the air and fired the rapidly alternating blasts of sound that would hopefully be familiar to Hayate after his earlier demonstration. The dark sensation in Uta grew stronger, he wasn't fighting to restore his friendship now. He was fighting to win, and if winning meant only Uta survived, then so be it.

The success of his metallic weapons impaling the young Uta filled the wrathful Hayate with final bouts of glee. He knew it was over for him. Having only a moment's respite from choking to death, the effects of Uta's previous Ninjutsu promptly manifested itself once again. Blood violently filled his windpipe, taking away what little air he could seize within the few seconds granted to him by his assault. If only it had lasted longer. Not that it would matter. What tidbit of conscious the monochrome youth retained noted the approaching Uta, flailing around the implanted limb that dealt so much devastation to the weapon specialist. It was his fault for underestimating the eyeless Sound-nin in the first place, even with fury reigning in over his psyche. Even as the blast of sound waves wreaked havoc upon his already unmoving form, numbness be damned, Hayate continued to spite the hellish Ikiryo, showering his former friend with a myriad of death glares despite his inability to perceive them. It was all the declining Konoha-nin could do as he gradually feel rearward, slamming into the hard, cold, wooden floor of the cottage they clashed within. He held onto that contempt until his breathlessness was much more permanent, briefly recalling an earlier memory upon arriving to the Village Hidden in the North Pole that 'justified' his red rage.

Shit man... I just wanted more hoes than the Santakage...

The red mist wiped clean from his mind, the full reality of the situation dawned on Uta. His senses allowed him to pick up even the faintest of sounds, including a human heartbeat. That made it all the more obvious to the sound gennin when one of the two racing heartbeats in his perception slowed and died out as Hayata crashed backwards onto the floor. "No! Hayate!" Uta shouted out and dashed forward, lifting the head of his companion in his lap and desperately trying to clear the pooling blood out of Hayate's mouth. He had gone too far, he should have known better. Hayata was a strong and proud warrior, but the fear was due to set in, Uta could have left it to do its job. But no, he had to push, to fight on even when logic told him that wasn't needed. "Someone, anyone, help him damn it!" Uta screamed to a crowd that had long since dispersed to make room for the clashing friends, and there was no one left who could help.

Uta's tortured eye sockets lacked tear ducts and thus no tears fell when he cried, but cry he did. With rage and loss burning in his heart Uta slammed his fists down on Hayate's chest, knocking loose an object from his departed mate's equipment. Uta for a brief moment feared another explosive attack like the heinous bombardment he had only narrowly escaped intact, but when it hit the ground the object become all too clear for the boy. The glasses...

Reaching down, Uta took up the glasses Hayate had bought for him, the gift that was to solidify their friendship. How had such a simple mistake gone so wrong? Was this the fate of all ninja? To fight and die over such pointless things as this? Uta gave a weak smile to himself and placed the glasses over Hayate's eyes. "My gift was a bit of a dud man, I don't deserve these. They probably look better on you anyway. With them, I'm sure you have all the bitches the next life has to offer. Farewell, Hayate." A feeble laugh was all Uta could manage, as he stood up from the body of Hayate. He gave a slow bow, a final sign of respect for his friend, then started to make his way back home. No doubt someone had gone to summon ninja to the scene, and Uta had no intention of dying here. He had to live. He carried not only his own will, but the will of Hayate now. He would have to be twice the ninja he was before to make up for the great loss that had afflicted the world.
