All Hallow's Eve was Croak's favorite day of the year, and today he had smelled a delicious feast. Roasted meats were fine and good, but the monstrous glutton found himself sniffing the sweet, undefeatable aroma of caramel apples and chocolate covered strawberries. In mere moments what was a happy-go-lucky festival was now the scene of a nightmare. Not that anybody could clearly see the nightmare. It was dark to begin with, and after the initial sound, a thick, rolling mist began to obscure the entire small fair. The splinters of cracking tents and the rise of a mountainous black silhouette was the only hint any of our intrepid heroes would get that were in grave danger. Croak didn't speak human language, but he did know how to laugh, and his was boisterous. Big, bellyful laughs ripped through the air, deep and growling and menacing. And where Croak laughed, the air itself rent the ground asunder. Were it not for his picket of sentries, he may never have realized the depths of madness that had arrived at the festival. As soon as he felt the behemoth intrude upon his territory, he took to the field. He may have been a researcher, but he had pride in his home. He wouldn't let a mere monster intrude on the happiness of his companions, no matter what its reasons. His hives buzzed with uncharacteristic anger, demanding that he eliminate the beast and smash it to paste beneath his armored feet. Fear? Fear was for the fool who had not mastered themselves. Goosebumps on toughened flesh formed on his forearms, and all because of a sound which was not pleasant to hear at all. People started to flee in all directions, except for a few others like him. Yasuke did not know if he as transfixed to his spot, or compelled to see what exactly made that sound, all he knew was when he finally saw the oddity, it made him ill. ‘I knew I should have left early…. The festival’s long benches were overturned and its smorgasbord of seasonal fare lay scattered underfoot. The demonic incursion had been so sudden; the taste of the festival’s just-eaten sweets still lingered in her mouth. Had the situation not been as dire, the medic would have mourned for such waste and her maggots would have been happy to clean up the mess. Instead, her swarm churned wildly beneath her skin in anticipation as her long strides carried them ever closer to the mist-shrouded form of the monstrous demon ravaging the fairgrounds. Amidst the crushing sounds of destruction and the demon’s bellowing laughter, Hounoki managed to locate and intercept her cousin. Her family had a tendency to drag her into such things even if it wasn’t up her aisle. At the very least the kunoichi was lucky that her ‘costume’, her bastard Furousha genes, was seemingly going over well with everyone present. It was a perk of this holiday she supposed. Why would I learn how to swim? I mean, I can walk on water after all right? It's not like I'll ever fall in. Whatever. It's a stupid skill anyways, we were born to walk on land, not flail around pretending we're something we're not. It's unnatural. Effect: Character may not swim in role play. Any attempt to swim results in the character needing to be saved by an outside source. This character is takes triple damage from the status effect 'Choking' when afflicted by way of water. In addition, this character is 'Afraid; 2' of all opponents when the terrain 'Water' is on the battlefield. Cost: +1 Defender Effect: During this character's turn, if a non-clone ally is the target of an unresolved attack that did not target the user as well, this character takes the attack instead. This character may only apply 50% of their total defensive modifiers. Only triggers once per battle per ally. Description: A Defender's past experiences or loving nature will not allow other's to suffer in front of them. A Defender will do anything possible to save their allies from harm, throwing themselves between their allies and enemies to do so even if they know it could kill them. Cost: +2 Compulsive Catch Phrase [Therefore] Effect: The character must say their catch phrase at least once every 50 spoken words or once every 800 written words, whichever comes first. This count is kept between posts. If the character fails to meet this requirement they take a -5% reduction to all of their non-tank stats for the rest of the day, cumulative. Their words were more directed at each other, not himself, but the frog-like monster could not help but notice everyone was getting closer to it. It's eyes narrowed and it heaved in a big breath before issuing that same screech that came out before. This time, instead of just alerting everyone to his presence, Croak's scream seemed to change something in the air. What once was just a thick mist actually seemed soupy. It seemed, somewhat solid. A large pane of force seemed erected in front of Croak, separating him from the ninja who were gathering. That ought to buy him enough time to chomp down on the tasty, tasty, caramel. Following the ANBU known as Sasori's initiative, the blonde Aburame began preparations of her own. Her amber eyes studied the miasmic fog that coagulated before the vaguely amphibian-like creature. He was not sure where the monster came from, but knew that he needed to act against it. He was not sure why he felt some form of connection with at least two of the ninjas standing near him, but felt a tingle in the back of his head when the other male started to use some type of insect jutsu. In fact, he felt like screaming because of it due to the number which were on the field. The same went to what seemed to be the insect user’s blonde friend. He looked at the remaining kunoichi as she simply prepared for the worst… And then the monster roared. A mist descended around them, making Yasuke’s vision miniscule, well, only to the part which he no longer can see the physique of the monstrosity. The air tasted as foul as it smelled. Yasuke was not sure what was coming after that, so he simply sought to prepare himself He formed the hand seals and as he finished with the appropriate amount of chakra, he felt his skin starting to harden and become stronger due to its reinforcement. If the creature hits, he wanted to be as strong as steel, or at least the approximation what steel would be. His brown skin started to dull as it hardened while the complexion became pale. Stretching while taking the kink out of his neck, he looked at the last position to where the creature was currently and stated ‘Well… those roasted frog legs don’t roast themselves’ .:]Response Phase[:. Traps, numerical superiority and advantageous positioning all required foresight, planning. In an event such as this, he did not have the time to prepare as he would have liked. Fortunately, chakra could in some cases be used as a substitute for time. His insects gushed forth from his body, spreading throughout the field in random patters as they awaited their master’s orders. Ignoring the waves of black chitin streaming from beneath his skin, the masked ninja took advantage of the minor injuries caused by the swarm’s escape, smearing blood across his palm and slamming his hand into the ground. “Assist us, Sokoren,” he commanded. Smoke issued from ink that existed for the briefest of moments, revealing a large bipedal rhinoceros beetle that stood before Sasori, mouth gaping as it took in the monstrous demon. “Wooow, that’s nasty-looking,” the young summon commented, blinking rapidly. Then it smiled, lowering its horn. “But I looks like it’s a good fighter, too! Thanks, Shiina!” It took off at a run, cheerfully engaging the monster as swiftly as it could. Shiina sighed and shook his head, wondering if the energetic little beetle would ever grow up. His head swung around at the trace of chakra on his arm, gaze softening as he saw Hou finishing her medical technique. His usual method of operation was at as great a distance as possible, but with his cousin’s support he could perhaps act safely with more risk. They didn't have any plan. But he did. He'd chomp them all to dust. But first he had to soften them up. So Croak inhaled a deep breath and then exhaled a mighty screech. Through the shield wall it wasn't very powerful, but it didn't need to be. The effect of the sound waves was to knock everyone ass over teakettle, leaving them open to an attack from Croak's second mouth. The ground trembled again, though not so much in the magnitude that the aberration's footsteps wrought the earth. From smoke and runes, a massive horned beetle took the field under Shiina's contract. Even in these trying times, Hounoki couldn't help but admire her cousin's dedication to his studies. It certainly proved that both Aburame chuunin pursued their specialized crafts with great zeal. Hounoki's vigilant gaze scanned the battleground for their two remaining allies- one was a young man whose face she had no name to. There was something else about him- a feeling? A sense? Her maggots felt it too as they roiled under her skin in the battle's heat. It stirred a memory of anguish, of loss... it was the story of how Hounoki came to be as she stood today, twisted and cursed. Her amber eyes softened and the medic looked away, lest her will falter. It was so poignant. The other shinobi was a young woman who asked a rather open-ended question that the Leaf medic had no answer to. The creature was cocooned in some crystallization of its own miasma, after all. Well, there was only one way to find out. "Let's see what it's made of." From her right palm, the stark white of a bone-forged blade broke through skin as the girl's ulna and tibia extended. It needed more time to hone though as Hounoki continued to learn how to craft with her... gifts. With a lunge followed by resolute strides, she advanced on the vaguely amphibious gargantuan. She made no attempt to shoulder the blow as the creature let loose another wail, which took the form of a buffeting shockwave. Staggered but undeterred, Hounoki took the impact in stride and returned fire. And lots of it. Her whole person ignited in a wreath of flame as Hounoki fed her own flesh as kindling. Was it time to use the demon already? No. That was.. Pushing it. She would wait it out. She wanted to see how this creature responded to the exchanges that the four combatants would push out at this stage. They were all just getting a feeling for the creature now as it were. She doubted that any of her other-village ‘comrades’ were going full bore from the start either. Still, she seemed to be the only one thus far willing to make to get close to it. At least, temporarily. She was being shown up by the leaf brat. She couldn’t very well let that go. Smirking to herself she pushed off from where she was still recovering from the shockwave before. Her body wreathed in sparks to contrast the raging inferno on the other young woman. The monster’s wall of force blew past him, sending him back half a pace, reverberating painfully through his chest. The cross Hounoki had etched into his arm shone briefly, turning from white to green as it began to release its stored power and restore his body. He retook the half-pace forward, sending a silent message to the monster that he would not be moved. Sokoren had made his charge at the abomination, joining the two kunoichi as they began their head-on assault. His chest swelled with pride as he watched Hounoki’s devastating blazing charge, the intensity and force of the flames incomparable to the sparks she had fought with during the Chuunin Exams. They had both come far and now was the time to show the results of their efforts. The Konoha medic's great infernal burst was enough to demolish the barrier the demon seemingly created from the ungodly screeching it was capable of, and the remnants of her focused will and flame even licked the monster's slimy skin. The other kunoichi soon joined her in the melee with a splitting blow to... one of the parts of the creature that looked kind of face-ish. It was hard to tell. She danced carefully away from where the demon teetered after Sokoren the great beetle slammed into it, and the advance of the large arthropod heralded the familiar hum of Shiina's hives. Even with how massive this monster was, staking out a comfortable spot close-quarters was becoming a quite stuffy. Hounoki followed the flow of her cousin's kikai as they formed living bonds upon the creature's pillars for legs. Keeping Konoha's willful flame at a blazing simmer across her person, she followed her cousin's lead in helping to restrain the beast. While the purpose of the correct fighting technique was to lock her subdue an opponent with bodyweight and some key joint locks, Hounoki had a feeling she'd be left just a flag flying in a storm. With an arm and a leg hooked to the insect chain around one of the creature's front legs, she reached for the monster's lower-most set of teeth with her free arm. If she could just reach, she'd pull and pull with all her might, determined to hold the demon's main head twisted toward its foreleg. - Turn 2RESPONSE Climate is Mist! Response Phase Climate Reduced Accuracy by 10% Set-up Phase Set-up Phase Action - Sky Dancer Jutsu generates [1] additional charge if jutsu hit lands on opponent. Main Phase Electricity was dancing across her skin and flickering to life as she flipped back from the creature’s hulking frame. Putrid smelling blood, or so she hoped, was seemingly springing free from where she had hit. A small smirk exposed itself on her features as she twisted back into a standing position. Her body swaying and flowing as if to a shallow beat in her mind as she kept the ‘dance’ going inside of her. The electricity faintly sparking off of her as she bounded forward once again. If they had any momentum at all it was best that they continued to keep it. If the attack had hit once, why not try it a second time? It only made sense, at least to her, it would expose her to any counters that the creature’s addled brain might be able to think up as she repeated it but.. It was best to work with what she knew had landed once for the time being. She wasn’t intending to give this creature a chance to recover. Demonic as it was if she could leech it’s life-giving source away from it then it would die. That was just how nature, even otherworldly creatures, worked. It was a law of life. So, once again, her frame spun into the air above the creature and came crushing down with a splitting palm hoping to dig ever deeper into it’s exposed flesh and rend that wound into a gush inducing one. Although just rumor and urban legend it was that very legend that spawned the creation of this style. Users of the Sky Dancer style are experts of the usage of Hybrid techniques, primarily Raiton and Unton elements but rare cases have Shinobi using their native affinities instead, and utilize these techniques for all of their actions. When using the style a user’s elemental nature engulfs their body as the excess chakra they bring to the surface is expelled from their pores. The beast’s flesh was formidable, but even monsters could be taken unawares and hampered. His allies whirled into a long, dagger-like spinning auger, lancing straight towards the monster’s ear. Description: Upon birth, members of the Aburame Clan are entered into a contract with the Kikai, or destruction bugs. These bugs feast on the chakra of their host as a parasite, but in return the Kikai are able to be controlled with a simple thought and a surge of chakra. Within the cavities of the body of any Aburame member can be found swarms of the bugs crawling about: forever eating and breeding. The squat little beats thought that by staying perfectly still (a common toad defense mechanism) that he would be able to avoid detection. Unfortunately that doesn't work when you are the size of a railroad car. Unfortunately for our heroes, even their most valiant efforts didn't take him down in time. "GONG! GONG! GONG! GONG! The clock began to toll a booming, rolling gong. The sound echoed forth from seemingly everywhere, but Croak was the only one who knew what it meant. "No! No go back! Stay! Staaaaay!" It seemed like Croak had outstayed his welcome. And sure enough, a brief hint of daylight poked above the hills on the horizon. With the end of All Hallow's Eve, Croak felt himself evaporating, turning back into the mist from whence he came. No evil spirit can stay in our world when the holiday is over...
