The Ōshiro Syndicate are a curious and elusive clan born of the Jashinist Religion. Though associated with the murderous cult, the clan is made up of the notorious and wealthy Ōshiro family who prefer to deal in matters of money rather than extremism. They maintain an outwardly peaceful existence on the outskirts of the Hidden Sound, privately amassing large fortunes through shockingly criminal means.

Though they may be known as Jashinists, the clan has made it clear that their only real interest is crime of a more civilian nature, namely underground gambling, tax evasion and human trafficking. They are the Kings and Queens of Denchi no Kuni’s vile underbelly and the prosperous clan even owns and operates several brothels within the country and even the hidden village. Unlike other wealthy clans and businesses, the Ōshiro do not take any particular interest in any sort of politics, nor do they offer parlay with local politicians beyond the scope of their… unique businesses. When policies change, the clan simply buries any newly-illegal enterprise in the shadow of their treasury.

Young as it is, the Ōshiro Syndicate still has a colorful history. They were born of a Jashinist family who found their preoccupation with crime and cash flow to be a more fruitful experience than the cultish habits of their brethren. Jaded by the doomsday attitude and gruesome crimes of the religion, a wealthy family of politicians, businessmen and landowners broke away from the other Jashinists. They had found the association with the vile cult to be damaging to their reputation. Finding clients and voters had become problematic, to say the least.

The Ōshiro and their love of money met with the questionable nature of Denchi no Kuni to form the clan as it is today: a reclusive group of gangsters who, despite their reputation and origins, have very little to do with the Jashinists and their beliefs. The collective money of their family unit was pooled together and invested in a small collection of businesses. Most were legal, but all were morally questionable in some way. Many of these businesses are now known as fronts for money laundering, prostitution and contract killings but the bountiful coffers of the Syndicate keeps them safe from the prying eyes of local law enforcement.

During the NCIA occupation the Ōshiro were able to escape persecution through the use of their vast influence and deep pockets. They essentially bought their way through the international conflict, and members were not known to suffer under the Agency’s boot. The clan head and founder, Anazeru, ensured that any officials who came knocking experience a manner of luxury and care that was sure to send them away with a smile. This custom continues today, as the clan continues to butt heads with local law enforcement, though their continued spats still seem to result in satisfaction for both parties.

Customs

Much like the loosely-structured Namikaze with whom they share their village, the Ōshiro are not a clan in a typical sense. Though related by blood through the somewhat notorious Ōshiro family, the members do not function as a single entity unless it is seen to be profitable or advantageous (such as during the NCIA occupation.)  Those who wish to join the syndicate are welcomed into the family and most change their name to reflect their adopted “Ōshiro” heritage.

A sprawling compound, situated on the outskirts of Otogakure no Sato, is owned by the clan and living within is luxurious walls is encouraged. Though the core group of buildings is generally reserved for the core members of the Ōshiro family, all who find themselves in the Ōshiro fold are able to come and go as they please.

Though its members (especially the more wealthy and old) are not Shinobi by rule, the small clan is known to produce hunters and secret keepers of the highest calibre. Their dealings with Denchi’s underbelly have provided them the ear of the country’s toughest criminals and most accomplished politicians. Ōshiro Syndicate members who become Shinobi typically become hunters and assassins, their aptitude for killing and ability to keep secrets even under duress being unmatched.

During the rare times when formal attire is needed, the Ōshiro wear luxurious clothes of deep hues, high collars and lush velvet. The customary garb is often topped with flowing cloaks and scarves. A common motif of eyes, following the influence of their official clan emblem, runs through each piece of clothing.

Bloodline

The clan does not possess a bloodline in the true sense of the word, though are known for their remarkable ability to withstand pain and ability to perform as assassins.
