The chunin exams that could have been! Senju Hiragi and Nakayama Madoka swept up the ranks of the exams, one using effortless swordplay and the power of sound to confound and outclass her foes, while the other her prodigious healing talents and a level of brute strength that sent many of her opponents to the medical tents. The final round has come, a clash between the newest generation of titans amid a throng of cheering spectators. Konohagakure vs Iwagakure.

Cherry blossoms rained down upon the arena as Nakayama Madoka entered, avidly waving and blowing kisses to her legions of adoring fans. She could see more than a few banners held high above heads, and made sure to pose coquettishly for them as a reward for their effort. She grinned, feeling her spirits lifted by the roar of the crowd to new heights. Loved or hated, it was all exhilarating. Like actors on a stage, or two teams on one field. The drama, she couldn't get enough of it. She didn't even flinch when a pair of panties was thrown to the stands, just smiling and raising an approving eyebrow in the direction of the throw.

 

The only thing more exhilarating than the crowd was the thought of the fight to come. She’d seen the strength the spindly leaf medic brought to her matches; it was a joke how strong she was. An April fool’s joke. No matter how much chakra you had, it shouldn’t let you punch that hard. Not that it mattered to her; she didn’t intend on getting hit. She bounced on the balls of her feet, punching one gloved hand into her palm. The beat of her heart was like the beat of a drum, and without really considering it she started to sing in time, grinning fiercely. “Welcome to the bloodbath, jump into the tub. Fist-fight, death-match, come and join the club. Kick-start your face with a metal-clad boot, you should give up now your retaliation's moot…”

"Thunder is good, thunder is impressive; but it is lightning that does the work."

Description: It's unknown how the sturdy, metal plates that make up this set of leg-armor has existed, though they appear to predate the founding of the Hidden Villages, and are remniscent of the style of the Warring States Era. Some place the leg armor back to even earlier points in history, but what is known is that the armor has always seemed to embue its wearer with unnatural quickness, almost as if they had lightning coursing through their veins. Those who wear the Lightning Greaves are often able to move faster, and with more agility than even the quickest foe.

Special Abilities:

Resonance

Description: One of Kyoshinken's unique properties it is incredible resilience, especially under the aegis of a properly trained wielder. The blade is so durable that in the throes of battle its intense vibration can provide a kind of sonic barrier, protecting it from crippling damage.

Effect: When Kyoshinken would be destroyed by a 'Destroy Weapon' effect and its wielder has three or more Thunder Charges, the user may choose to negate the effect. If they choose to negate the effect, they are reduced to zero Thunder Charges.

High-Frequency Cuts

Description: One of the unique capabilities of Kyoshinken is it's tendency to vibrate while in use, especially when used in concert with certain techniques. This high frequency vibration turns any hit into a series of dozens of individual cuts, compromising any armour the target might be wearing and hammering through with comparatively little effort.

Effect: When this is weapon is used as part of a [Sound] attack, the target only applies 30% of defensive bonuses granted by items.

Description: An oversized katana commissioned by Nakayama Madoka upon her promotion to Genin and arrival in Iwagakure, Kyōshinken is a solid, durable blade made of the finest steel Iwagakure can mine. While its great weight and length demands that it be wielded in two hands, its single edge means that the bearer can rest the blade's back against their shoulder for ease of carrying. Honed to the finest edge possible and tempered to be virtually indestructible, Kyōshinken cost almost the entirety of Madoka's savings from her activities in Metropolis. It also incorporates a chain-link coil inside the weapon's grip, allowing the blade to be detached and attack from range and retract at the wielder's command.

Effect: Characters with this skill must train for an additional 2 posts, when training for techniques, jutsu points, or skills

Description: Some ninja don’t do well when left to their own devices. No matter how skilled they are, they don’t have the motivation to train as hard as they could if they had somebody there to psyche them up. In groups though, these ninja are able to perform just like any other shinobi.

Defender

Description: A Defender's past experiences or loving nature will not allow other's to suffer in front of them. A Defender will do anything possible to save their allies from harm, throwing themselves between their allies and enemies to do so even if they know it could kill them.

Effect: During this character's turn, if a non-clone ally is the target of an unresolved attack that did not target the user as well, this character takes the attack instead. This character may only apply 50% of their total defensive modifiers. Only triggers once per battle per ally.

Bisexuality

Description: Physical attraction, although typically gender-oriented, remains a subtle facet of the human psyche, and as such, some people are less restrictive of what appeals to their tastes, allowing them to grow attentive of either gender non-specifically

Effect: Any and all effects that specifically target gender now apply to this character, regardless of the intended target audience

Chakra Burn

Effect: For every 25 chakra used in a technique, the user takes 5 damage

Description: Your chakra has a corrosive nature to it, burning you whenever you use it. You can ignore the pain at times, but if you use too much it becomes overwhelming.

Advancement Seal [Genjutsu]

Effect: You are considered to have 80% of the base stat points in the chosen stat, rounded up. May only be taken once per stat.

Description: Ever since you were a youngster just learning how to be a ninja, you've been just piss poor at this one area. No matter how hard you work, you just have some inability to learn this effectively. You may be tender about the situation.

Cost: +1

 

Uninterested Combatant

Description: Some people have no interest in fighting those who are obviously weaker than them. These shinobi will turn down a fight with weaker individuals regardless of the situation and will engage only if assaulted.

Effect: When fighting an opponent 5 levels lower than yourself, skip your turn(s) until the opponent has a turn.

Restrictions: Cannot be taken with "Self-Defence".

This was it! Hiragi could barely contain her excitement. After many battles, she had fought her way up to the finals. The young woman was sure that the Hokage would notice her after this, and grant her an advancement to Chuunin rank. But, though her chest swelled with pride, she was not excited for her self. This promotion would mean that she was one step closer to finding a cure for her brother's ailment... one step closer to having her family back in one piece. As she stepped into the arena, heralded by the thunder in the stands, these thoughts of her brother were the only thing that gave the young woman the courage to go on. Though there had been some crowds at her previous battles, this was unlike anything she had seen before.

 

In a futile effort to distract herself from all of the attention, Hiragi tried to size up her opponent. Madoka was rumored to be both brutally strong and quick - able to dodge attacks effectively. Hiragi knew she'd have to push herself in order to keep up with this new foe. Breathing deeply, attempting to calm herself and become more in tune with her chakra flow, the young woman lowered herself into a defensive stance with her fists up. There was no point in engaging in drawn out pleasantries. The Senju was sure she would puke if she tried to talk.

She’d seen the replays of Hiragi’s fight, even say in and watched the semi firsthand from Iwa’s reserved box. That had been to see the girl’s fighting prowess, but now that they were on the field and the referee was counting down, all she could see was how cute the little leaf was. Really, how was she supposed to not put the chibi Senju in her pocket and take her home? Maybe if she won she could get that as her prize. She snuffed a laugh, shaking her head at the connections her mind made. She rolled her neck to the sound a few satisfying cracks, crossing her arms as her form blurred and shifted, three copies of her appearing and mirroring her stance perfectly. “Looks like the joke’s on us both.” She chuckled. Whatever magic had made Hiragi hit like a truck had made her Gates even more powerful.

 

Kaimon opened, blowing loose dust and gravel away from her in a circle of power. She grinned. “Nice to meet you, Hi-chan. Let’s have some fun.”

Clones... Hiragi had seen the technique used before, but her forays into ninjutsu were based solely on medicine. Perhaps when she went home she'd ask someone to tutor her in the art of the Shadow Clone. Until then, though, she had nothing to offer. Instead of focusing on her shortcomings, and the growing aura that surrounded her foe, Hiragi turned her attention inward. She could feel her chakra gathering beneath her skin, and pushed it into her hands, which curled into fists.

 

She was ready.

At a nod from Madoka, one of her clones stepped forward, cracking its knuckles. It was significantly weaker than she was, but the mob bosses always threw the cannon fodder into the fray first, right? This was just her playing the part. For the entertainment of the crowd, obviously. She smirked and kept her arms crossed, watching as her doppelganger dashed towards the medic and feinted high, dropping into a crouch and throwing a powerful low sweeping kick at the younger girl’s knees. Not strictly tournament legal, but this was the Chuunin Exams. There were no rules. God, she wished she had a fedora and a pinstripe suit. That would sell this whole thing so much better.

As she watched, the Iwa kunoichi’s foot began to tap impatiently. Her breathing began to speed up and she found herself rocking back and forth on the balls of her feet in anticipation. She’d planned to let Hiragi handle her clone before she really got started, but now? There was a glint of manic excitement in her eye, and the moment the adrenaline really started flowing the thought of following the plan was off the table. A single moment was all it took for Madoka to reach her top speed, literally blurring into action as her blade found its way into her hand. In a fraction of a second she made three slashes: a tearing pass along Hiragi’s leg, spinning to gain momentum and extending her arm to its limits to catch her twice across the forehead as well. “I’m depending on you to show me a good fight, Hi-chan! Everyone who I fought earlier was a pussy!”

Kyumon // Second Gate

Description: The Second Gate is the other gate located within the brain. This gate limits the production of endorphins and keeps the heart-rate in check. Releasing this gate floods the body with endorphins, relieving feelings of pain and fatigue, despite the continual breakdown of the muscles. An increased heart-rate allows oxygen to reach the muscles more quickly, preventing oxygen debt and keeping lactic acid from building up within the muscle tissue.

Effect: After activating, the user gains the ability to recover 3x Health Points and Stamina as a free action during their setup phase at any point during the battle while this gate is open. The user's level being equivalent to x. This increase may not exceed the user's maximum in either stat pool, and this ability may only be used once per battle. This skill may only be taken by ninja of level 20 or higher.

Restriction: Level 20

Thundering Auroch Style

Requirements: Kaimon, Mountain Ox Style, Nakayama Madoka

Effect: While active, all of the user's Ox Charges are converted to Thunder Charges. As long as the style remains active, all Taijutsu and Weapon Attacks are [Sound] element in addition to their other effects. The user cannot apply Wind or Lightning's effects to attacks through this effect. Thunder Charges are gained after a Thundering Auroch attack is used not if it hits. At the end of a turn where the user did not use a Thundering Auroch Technique, the user loses one Thunder Charge. For each consecutive turn where a Thundering Auroch Technique is not used, the user loses an additional Thunder Charge. Should the Eight Gates be deactivated, Thundering Auroch Style is immediately deactivated as well and all Thunder Charges revert to Ox Charges. Thundering Auroch Style is considered Mountain Ox Style for all purposes and Thunder Charges may be used instead of Ox Charges to activate effects or techniques, but may not pay for both Mountain Ox and Thundering Auroch abilities in the same turn. The user also gains the following effects depending on their number of charges:

Hiragi was surprised by Madoka's speed, and was easily caught off guard by the Iwa Shinobi's strikes. The young woman backpedaled a bit and was able to jump out of the way of the clone's assault, but the woman herself was a different beast entirely. She seemed to come out of nowhere, and Hiragi was barely able to get out of the way before the blade came at her legs. Unfortunately, the resonating sound within the Odachi lengthened its blade, and ripped into the . The young woman cried out in paid, distracted momentarily but unwilling to give up just yet. She thrust her palms forwards and, from them, erupted a dazzling gleam that deflected the incoming slashes at her face. The last thing Hiragi wanted to do was risk her eyesight for the tournament title.

 

As the bright pink barrier began to fade, the young woman  grabbed at a pouch on her hip and then shoved a small pill into her mouth. Even before she had finished chewing, the bleeding on her leg had began to subside somewhat. The wound, however, was still incredibly painful. As for the goading... Hiragi had nothing. She glared at Madoka with clenched teeth, unwilling to allow her words to cut as deep as the blade she wielded.

“Ara?” Madoka grinned, her rush having taken her a handful of paces past Hiragi. Her sword was humming nicely now from all the energy she’d poured into it, but despite her and her clone’s attacks the leaf medic was unharmed. “Not bad at all, Hi-chan. You’re just as good as I hoped you were!” The smile on her face was genuine, as was her earlier wish for a challenge. She knew how she came across, but she didn’t really care. She was here for a good fight and for her greatness to be recognised by the world, and she loved every moment of it. “I wonder, how long can you keep that shield up? Can I break it?” She scratched her chin in contemplation, resting her blade on her shoulder again. The air rippled as the Third Gate opened inside her body, and power flooded her limbs. Her skin turned a vibrant red, a shade darker than her hair. In a blur of speed far surpassing her previous dash, she engaged Hiragi again. “Let’s find out!”

Kaimon // First Gate

Description: The First Gate is a fail-safe that limits the output of the muscular system. By opening this gate, located in the brain, a person is able to nearly quintuple their physical performance in almost every aspect. These extreme results are not perfect, and much like all of the Eight Gates, cause wear and tear on the body. Slight breakdown and tearing has been noted in muscle tissue after having been effected by the Gate of Opening, and fatigue has been shown to set in quickly.

Effect: When activated, the user's Taijutsu, Speed, and Evasion stats are increased by 2x. The user's level being equivalent to x. The statistical bonus granted by this skill may never be less than +20 at any time. As an upkeep cost, the user must pay 5% of their total Stamina Points every turn. This skill may only be taken by ninja of level 10 or higher.

Seimon // Third Gate

Description: Located in the spine, the Third Gate presides over the flow of information within the body. By releasing neural inhibitors, the body is able to correlate its motions flawlessly, each part of the body moving in perfect unison. The undammed highways of the nervous system cause damage to the body though, as the electrical impulses from the brain are magnified to a greater extent. At this gate, the coloration of the skin changes to a deep crimson, revealing the enhanced blood/oxygen levels within the body.

Effect: When activated, the user's Taijutsu, Speed, and Evasion stats are increased by 2x. The user's level being equivalent to x. The statistical bonus granted by this skill may never be less than +90 at any time. As an upkeep cost, the user must pay 3% of their total Health Points every turn. After a battle in which the user opens Seimon, a full day (RL) and no less 3 days (IC) must be spent in hospitalization and a recovery training of 1000 words must be fulfilled. This skill may only be taken by ninja of level 30 or higher.

Thundering Auroch Style

Requirements: Kaimon, Mountain Ox Style, Nakayama Madoka

Effect: While active, all of the user's Ox Charges are converted to Thunder Charges. As long as the style remains active, all Taijutsu and Weapon Attacks are [Sound] element in addition to their other effects. The user cannot apply Wind or Lightning's effects to attacks through this effect. Thunder Charges are gained after a Thundering Auroch attack is used not if it hits. At the end of a turn where the user did not use a Thundering Auroch Technique, the user loses one Thunder Charge. For each consecutive turn where a Thundering Auroch Technique is not used, the user loses an additional Thunder Charge. Should the Eight Gates be deactivated, Thundering Auroch Style is immediately deactivated as well and all Thunder Charges revert to Ox Charges. Thundering Auroch Style is considered Mountain Ox Style for all purposes and Thunder Charges may be used instead of Ox Charges to activate effects or techniques, but may not pay for both Mountain Ox and Thundering Auroch abilities in the same turn. The user also gains the following effects depending on their number of charges:
