Clan Progenitor

Nankan Ōgimachi

Clan Head:

• Nankan DaikiYuuseike | 優性家 ) & Nankan Nihame ( Resseike | 劣性家 )

Clan Status:

Prominent & Respected: The Nankan are a prominent force with Kumogakure no Sato, having been with the village nearly since its beginning. The Yuuseike and its members have many seats on councils and committees high up in the politics of the village and nation. Their power is felt in their influence and wisdom that has helped the village prosper over countless generations. The Resseike on the other hand is both feared and awed by their great abilities and power in battle. Often a strong contingent in the Kumogakure forces, the Nankan have long been a strength on the front line of Kumogakure conflicts.

Clan Age:

Old: The Nankan Clan has its roots in the time of wars before the creation of ninja villages. The clan at the time was a collection of family that was broken into two divisions; Yuuseike and Resseike. The combat abilities of the Resseike gave the clan much power while the political savvy of the Yuuseike allowed them to forge allies and connections that allowed their lands to prosper. When they were approached to join into the alliance that would become Kumogakure they did so with the aim of taking control. While their aspirations for power did not work out, the amount of strength they did gain with their new allies was enough to allow them to cement their place in the village.

Clan Structure:

Yuuseike | 優性家: The Yuuseike (lit. Dominant Family) of the Nankan is made up of those of the clan who were not born with their bloodline. As a means of controlling those of their clan that were volatile and dangerous the clan created a structure in which only those without their bloodline could hold positions of leadership within the clan. As time went on this translated into a power relationship that meant only members of the clan that came from the Yuuseike were permitted to run for office, join councils, or progress into political power in the hidden village.

Resseike | 劣性家: The Resseike (lit. Recessive Family) is made up of those who were unlucky enough to be born with Ken'aku Chakra. Held out of power by the Yuuseike, it is not unusual for the members of the Resseike to feel resentment towards the Yuuseike. However, the culture of shame around their bloodline and uncontrollable abilities along with the seals placed on them at birth allow the Yuuseike to maintain control over them.

Clan Vernacular:

• Ken'aku Chakra | 険悪チャクラ: The Ken'aku Chakra (lit. Volatile Chakra) is what the Nankan use to refer to the chakra that the members of the Resseike are born with. It is a violent chakra that when mastered is a great force, but until it is poses a danger to the holder and all of those around them. This is why the chakra is sealed after birth.

Yokusei Fuin | 抑制封印: The Yokusei Fuin (lit. Control Seal) is a seal placed at birth on those of the Nankan Clan who possess the Ken'aku Chakra. The seal has two intentions. The first is the protection of the infant, as the volatile power of the Nankan can cause the Tenketsu to flare and explode, permanently damaging the body and chakra circulatory system. The second is as a means of control as only the Yokusei can release the final seal that if activated will permanently seal off the person's chakra. Originally meant as a fail safe to be used only if the Nankan's life was in danger from their own bloodline, it later became a threatening tool to keep the Resseike in line.

• Toppajo Fuin | 突破徐封印: The Toppajo Fuin (lit. Breaking the Seal Gradually) is the process by which a Nankan of the Resseike comes to master their Ken'aku Chakra. The seal that is placed on them at birth has 361 locks, one for each of their Tenketsu. As they progress in their control the seals are removed one by one, allowing more and more access to the Ken'aku Chakra. Most Nankan never reach the final seals, but those who do are well known throughout the clan and are often highly sought after assets by the village.

QhrHCpD.png Clan History:

In the times before ninja village, clans warred for control of land and power. In the mountainous areas of the north, the areas that would eventually come to be known as Rai no Kuni, a man named Ōgimachi was born. Ōgimachi family was growing, a group of nomadic people who tried to settle multiple times only to be displaced by clans at war. Ōgimachi had a younger brother, Takayori, whom was plagued by a strange sickness that was common within his family. He would collapse without warning, break out into cold sweats for no reason, and something the supernatural would surround him unexpectedly. As they grew, Ōgimachi grew frustrated with his world, and under the guise to find a cure for his brother's sickness he left his family and traveled far. For three years he traveled, crossing the mountains and joining the warring clans that sought power for of their own. It was during this time that Ōgimachi learned of chakra and those that could wield it and realized that his family's illness was not what it seemed.

The clever Ōgimachi convinced a wielder of chakra named Ietoshi to travel with him back to his family, pleading with him to help his brother. When they arrived, Ietoshi was able to place a seal on Takayori, preventing his volatile chakra from harming him any more. With his new found understanding, Ōgimachi united his family and formed the Nankan clan and banner. Using the knowledge from Ietoshi, Ōgimachi was able to help is clansmen hardness their abilities for war. Ietoshi, seeing what Ōgimachi was doing, fled back to his own clan and warned his clan leader of their strength. Ietoshi's clan set on the newly formed Nankan, but were defeated by Takayori at the command of Ōgimachi in the Battle of the Crying Sky.

Over the next decade Ōgimachi expanded the Nankan's sphere of influence, using the power of his brother and clansmen to bring them power. At the same time though, Ōgimachi began to fear the power that he did not have. To prevent his brother from ever gaining power over him, Ōgimachi modified his brother's seal to allow him to destroy his Tenketsu if the need ever arose. This modification was passed through the other clansmen and thus the Yuuseike and Resseike were born.

Ōgimachi continued to conquer for many years, dying at an old age and passing the clan on to his eldest son. The clan continued to prosper until the formation of Kumogakure no Sato where they joined with other clans to form an alliance that could not be broken by the similar alliances being formed in the south. The Nankan tried to take control of the village and overthrow the Shodai Raikage, but were unable to gain enough support to do so. Since then they have continued to maintain a large amount of power within the village while supporting it as much as they can.

QhrHCpD.png Cultural Information:

The Nankan are an ancient and spiritual people. While from the outside their structure may seem archaic and barbarian, the members of the clan take great pride in their way of life. Those of the Yuuseike and believe that their birth is that of divine providence for the clan and that it is their duty to maintain their family and help keep harnessed the dangers our their brethren. To them, their acts and control of the Resseike is a duty that must be upheld for civilization, and to them their devotion to the Resseike's care is similar to others care of their elderly. It is what one does as a Nankan and that's all there is to it. On the other hand, the Resseike believe that it is their place to be harnessed, understanding from an early age just how dangerous their chakra can be and what it can do if uncontrolled. They see the Yuuseike as kind caretakers, allowing them to live normal lives that would have been impossible without the Yokusei Fuin.

Clan Traits:

• The Nankan traditionally have dark hair and green or dark eyes. Due to the clan being very large it often marries within itself, keeping the same traits with little variation. The clan members themselves though come in many shapes and sizes, though generally males are a bit taller than average and wide of shoulder and females a bit shorter than average and slight in build.

Clan Outlook:

• The Nankan clan is one of deep tradition and beliefs. They see themselves as the core of the village and do everything they can to support the needs of the village. The clan also sees themselves as pieces of a larger whole and often find outlooks that focus on the individual and not the society as a whole disgusting. Each Nankan member has their role to play in the world and to strive for another's role is the ultimate taboo.

Clan Marriage:

• The Nankan arrange marriages for their clan members, with the Yuuseike Head and Resseike Head having final say in all relationships. It is uncommon for a Nankan to get approval to marry outside of the clan, but it does happen a few times each generation to allow genetic diversity and often to secure new influence or power. It is forbidden to marry without permission in the clan and it is a crime punishable by execution by the clan.

Clan Families:

• Because of the nature of the Yuuseike and Resseike, family structures are more communal than nuclear. While in the last few generations parents have been allowed to raise their children despite the structure they are born into, at the age of twelve all children are moved into their appropriate clan housing for permanent residence. Visitations are always allowed, but the clan does not allow the Yuuseike and Resseike to reside under the same roof after the age of twelve. The only exception is in marriage, in which members of the Yuuseike and Resseike who do marry may live together in a single home. However, marriage between members of the Yuuseike and Resseike is a minority occurrence, most arranged marriages being between two Yuuseike or two Resseike.

Clan Professions:

• Members of the Nankan clan are able to partake in any profession. While it is incredible uncommon for a member of the Yuuseike to become a shinobi, it is not forbidden. In an average generation, one in ten Nankan who take up the profession of shinobi will be from the Yuuseike. Aside shinobi, the Nankan clan has business in trade and politics and many members find themselves naturally suited for roles within those two professions.

Clan Estates:

• While the average clan member may live a normal life within or outside the profession of shinobi, very few live outside of the hidden village and the vast majority live within the sprawling clan estates that takes up its own residential block within the village walls. The Yuuseike and Resseike live in separate homes within the estates, but often will mingle throughout a normal day.

Kumogakure no Sato Relationship:

• The Nankan clan has a strong relationship with the village, its members finding roles in all of its faculties from shinobi to trade. As a founding clan of the village their roots are also strong, having ties to the other clans that often go back generations. The village sees the Nankan as strong patriots and allies, and can always rely on them when there is a need.
