Weight: 130 lbs
Skin: Light Brown
Description: Kogen is unassuming looking often wearing muted colors like brown and grey. His hair is almost always covering his face when he isn’t in battle or training. Although he is tall, he tends to slouch as he feels uncomfortable when he stands out. He doesn’t carry himself with confidence unless he is controlling his puppets or working on them. For everyday attire he tends to wear dark blue pants and a shirt of muted colors that is a size too big. His clothes are often covered in grime and dirt from working on his puppets although he keeps his face and hair clean. When he is sent on missions, however, he wears a fitting one piece black jumpsuit with a backpack to carry his puppets. One the chest of his jumpsuit is the Japanese character for control in bright red.

Personality

Overview: Driven, Quiet, Angry
Likes: Practicing Puppetry, Making Puppets, Listening to the sound of birds
Dislikes: Feeling weak, Hot summer days

Personality: Kogen is a quiet and socially awkward individual. He can be quirky at times and often says the wrong thing at the wrong time. This leads to people thinking that he is a strange brooding person. He is driven by his need to make Joji proud by gaining power through control. He tends to sit back and observe people in social situations so he can best manipulate them. When he is alone, however, he is a kind soul. He often enjoys getting up early to listen to the birds call. The presence of other individuals tends to cause him stress as he feels the need to disappear into the background and avoid everyone’s attention. Once he decides to let people in, he relaxes but doesn’t completely let his guard down as people are just one more thing that he needs to control. The awkward, quiet persona isn’t intentionally cultivated and he often feels like a failure when he isn’t acting charismatic enough to make close connections.

Relationships

Shibizu Botan: Kogen’s father and main tormentor, Botan has largely made his meager living as a poor fisherman. Although fishing is a major export for the Kirigakure, Botan spent most of his earnings on alcohol and gambling. After the death of his wife during the birth of Kogen, Botan fell into a spiral of depression and alcoholism. All of the hate, fear, and anxiety from that tragedy was taken out on Kogen through neglect and beatings. Botan has always blamed others for his mistakes. His relationship with Kogen is one of violence with no love between them.

Takahashi Joji: Kogen’s mentor, is often kind towards Kogen and tends to look at him more as a legacy than a child of his own. Being the first person to go out of their way to show him kindness, Kogen holds him in very high esteem and looks up to him as a father. Although Joji is kind, he is also strict and pushes Kogen to the edge of his limits often.

Tanaka Kado: As his main bully, Kado and Kogen share a relationship much like the one between Kogen and Botan. Lots of hate both ways and plenty of violence from Kado. The key difference here is that Kogen views Kado as a challenging obstacle to overcome. Though Kado couldn’t care if Kogen lives or dies, Kogen has gotten most of his drive during training from trying to best Kado and one day control him.

Backstory

Much like the village in which he was born, Kogen’s story is one of pain, violence, and blood. It started on the cold autumn night that he came into this world…

After hours of rough labor in which the doctors were unsure if he was going to make it or not, Kogen. Unfortunately, however, it cost his mother her life. Kogen’s father, Botan, put all of the blame for the loss of his wife on Kogen. As the years went by, Botan treated his son with increasing dislike until his feelings turned into hate. The hate turned Botan to drinking, and when the drinking started, so did the beatings.

When Kogen started studying at the ninja academy, he had finally found his escape. He threw everything into his studies in hope that it would help him make a better life as a shinobi. His escape from the violence was short lived, however, as his scrawny build and awkward nature tended to attract bullies. The worst of which was Tanaka Kado. Bruises, bloodied noses, broken bones, and lacerations were just some of the things that Kado brought to the table. Unable to escape from the violence at home or at school, Kogen was beginning to think that the pain would never end. Until one day…

An excerpt from Kogen’s memories:

Gotta keep running…If they catch me I’m dead…Why did I think I could stop him just by landing one good punch? *You hear panting and frantic footsteps* I’m too exhausted…Can’t keep running…Need to find a place to hide *more heavy panting* Looks like there is a building up ahead…Maybe somebody can help. *You hear a door slam open* HEEEEEeeeeelllppp… *the cry dies off as you see a feeble old man sitting at a workbench* It’s too late *you see the room spin as the door comes back into view and 3 much larger boys step through*  “You shouldn’t have done that Kogen. Now I’m gonna make you suffer even more” * you hear a rustling of clothes from behind* “Sit down old man or you’re next!” *You see two forms blur forward, hear the crack of wood on skulls, and watch as all three fall to the ground with thuds* “Young people these days think that power is all about using brute force to make others bend to your will.” *You see the wooden forms before you slowly turn their heads revealing vacant stares and gaping puppet mouths* “In reality, true power comes from control.” The scene goes black as Kogen passes out.

For the next 6 years, Kogen spent all of his free time at old man Takahashi Joji’s workshop. Joji taught Kogen about crafting and controlling puppets. Most importantly of all he taught Kogen the philosophies that he lived by. Control. To have control over yourself is to have control over your life. To have control over your life is to have balance. When you are balanced, you can influence the things and people around you. With influence over others comes control over them. And control over others is true power. These philosophies spoke to Kogen on a primal level. He was tired of being controlled by others through force. He was tired of being weak. He swore we would get control over everyone because that is the true power.
