Cellar Door Posted July 9, 2013 Posted July 9, 2013 (edited) Okay, these are a new innovation courtesy of me. Essentially, it's a small skill, I mean, for a Practice Skill to work, you have to look at it and go "Yeah, I wouldn't pay -1 for this." and that's because you get it for free. Before anyone yells, think about this really fast. We have been able to quest for extremely powerful items on NA for a long time. It reduces the cost of an item to 5 bucks. That's basically nothing. 5 bucks, and words for some powerful, and permanent effects. These are in essence, the fringe benefits of doing training under a sensei. I'm going to throw down some of the rules and guidelines that would coincide with these, and if it helps, don't think of them as skills at all, but something entirely new. I got an idea for something like this a long time ago, when Eechi posted the newest version of the Rasengan, and it's little training segments. Rei and I were discussing them, and it seems like they'd be a fun little way for GM's to spice up training sessions. Practice Skill Rules: - Practice skills must be trained for. - Practice skills may not be trained for by oneself. - At any time that a character is training for a practice skill, they may also gain Experience. - The benefits afforded by practice skills stack with other benefits of their kind. - The benefits afforded by practice skills must be small. (i.e. may not equal a regular skill in power.) - Practice skills may only be paid for with Jonin-Taught SP. - Practice skills must have an in-character learning time. Tree Climbing Practice Description: The idea behind climbing vertical surfaces to improve one’s chakra control is not new. Many shinobi traditions have taught it for years under different names. The exact details of the training vary, but the concept is simple, to climb a vertical surface one must focus chakra at the soles of their feet. If too little chakra is applied, one simply falls. If too much chakra is used, they will repel themselves from the surface. The key is applying just the right amount, a trick which has many applications in the world of the shinobi. Training: Characters attempting to complete this Practice must complete a 10-Post training in which they learn to effectively climb vertical surfaces using only their feet, while under the supervision of a Jonin. (or alternatively; a character who has completed this Practice) The in-character time to complete this Practice is based on Death Bonus, as follows; Average- 7 Days; Gifted- 5 Days; Genius- 3 Days; Prodigy- 1 Day; Legendary- ½ Day. Effect: Characters who have successfully completed Tree Climbing Practice have the Chakra costs of all techniques reduced by 2.5%. This reduction stacks with all other forms of cost reduction. Cost: -.5 [Jonin-Taught SP] Water Surface Walking Practice Description: Standing on the surface of a body of water is no easy feat. As a fluid, water is constantly at motion, and a person who wishes to balance on the surface must be able to constantly adjust the amount of the chakra being focused on their feet or else find himself or herself dunked. This training traces its origins to Kirigakure, where water is a constant to the landscape. In many nations it has gained fame as a training tool, often aiding in the art of summoning by allowing a more refined control of the chakra being used to summon. Training: Characters attempting to complete this Practice must complete a 15-Post training according to the training guidelines, while under the supervision of a Jonin. (or alternatively; a character who has completed this Practice) The in-character time to complete this Practice is based on Death Bonus, as follows; Average- 10 Days; Gifted- 8 Days; Genius- 6 Days; Prodigy- 4 Days; Legendary- 2 Days. Effect: Characters who have successfully completed Water Surface Walking Practice increase all summoning rolls by +10. This effect stacks with all other abilities that effect the outcome of summoning rolls. Cost: -.5 [Jonin-Taught SP] Edited July 9, 2013 by Cellar Door
Rei Posted July 9, 2013 Posted July 9, 2013 You and I disused this on Skype and I have no issue with the zero cost as the 15 post training requirement compsenastes for the minor effects. However, I'll wait for a second opnion before casting my approval. Some are still weary of 'free' skills.
Rhap Sodos Posted July 9, 2013 Posted July 9, 2013 (edited) Not sure what your arguments with Rei were, but these are my concerns: We have been able to quest for extremely powerful items on NA for a long time. It reduces the cost of an item to 5 bucks. That's basically nothing. 5 bucks, and words for some powerful, and permanent effects. True, but it's a fancy replacement effect - instead of spending money [an infinite resource on NA] on an item, you're "grinding" words [another infinite resource]. It's more so the flavor of questing and finding an item that chances are, aren't displayed on some shop window. Instead of spending your words on missions to obtain money, you're doing it to find the weapon. Skill points are a much more finite and valuable resource. Unless you 1. have a DB or 2. are max level, there is really no way to "gain" additional Skill Points. Additionally, while items can be very powerful, there are also inherent risks in using them - namely, weapons can be destroyed. Even "indestructible" items can be rendered unusable for the battle. "Yeah, I wouldn't pay -1 for this." ... Second, I would argue that a -2.5% Chakra to all techniques that stacks with other skills is worth paying -1 SP for. If I actually got off my ass and finished my summons, +10 to a roll is also a pretty solid bonus. If we're even toying with the idea of 0 Cost Skills, it would have to be something much more limited/specific [e.g. -2.5% to a all techniques that use your primary elemental specialty, +5 Gennin Rank Modifier for Summons, etc.] Edited July 9, 2013 by Rhap Sodos Wording
Hardcore Skittlez Posted February 16, 2014 Posted February 16, 2014 Reviving this a little bit! First one I'll 2nd, but... I feel the water-walking training should give some kind of terrain-oriented effect rather than a summoning bonus.
cntrstrk14 Posted February 27, 2014 Posted February 27, 2014 I agree with Megan's point, your logic about legendary weapons is deeply flawed. Words can be turned into money infinitely, quested items just skip the middle man. Skill points are a finite resource. However, for -1 SP for both of these together I can approve them.
Cellar Door Posted February 27, 2014 Author Posted February 27, 2014 Yeah, Megan's post was from when I was trying to get away with -0 for them. Same with the mission statement at the beginning. The current costs and such come from discussions in Staff on the skype I think. Anyway, 1 more approval?
