Jin.thumb.jpg.b944095405216f203afc1452074d76bf.jpg
Jin two years after graduating from the Academy

Height: 5'11”
Weight: 155 lbs.

Hair: Dark black. Half swept back, half side swept with long bangs surrounding the face on right side.

Eyes: Nara dark brown with black pupils.
Skin: Almond light-brown

Clothing: Jin tends to limit himself to three outfits: one for comfort, one for travel or light work, and one for missions.

Comfort: Jin wears his comfortable clothes at his home outside the Nara clan forest or when making trips into Konoha proper. He wears wooden geta with red straps on his feet with loose black drawstring pants, ankle-length. On top he wears an oversized white baseball tee with dark sleeves and the Nara clan logo on the back.

Travel/Light Work: While traveling or working at home, Jin wears clothes more suitable for active wear. Black sandals extend ¾ of the way to the knee. Light gray pants are comfortable and breathable. A black pouch is worn tied to Jin’s upper thigh and is used to carry traveling tools. A pale bluish undershirt is worn and a black hitai-ate used as a belt with the protector to the side so as to blend in more easily during travel. A long grayish coat with a semi-high collar is worn and a black sling is thrown across the body in order to hold additional travel gear/materials. A small Nara clan logo appears on the right shoulder of the coat.

Battle: In battle, Jin wears white wrap around the whole leg. Black sandals are worn with black pants dropping down to knee height. A light gray, almost tan-ish, long sleeve shirt with tied closures is worn tucked into the pants and a gray sash is worn around the waist concealing a pouch used to hide ninja tools. Light wrist protectors are worn outside the shirt. A cape is worn which wraps around the shoulders and upper chest and is colored black with a deep, reddish-brown on the underside. A hitai-ate with white straps is worn in proper placement on the forehead.

Physical Description:

Jin has an average looking face with a few distinct features. He rarely shows emotion on his face and as such his skin is clear with very little signs of wear. He has light birthmarks on both upper cheekbones which are symmetrical and form 2 parallel crescents (scooped towards the eyes). As Jin is getting older, straight dark facial hair is beginning to grow on his chin and cheeks, but as yet there is no sign of a mustache. Jin also wears the customary earring on the right side that represents the ino-shika-cho bond. Additional earrings on the earlobe and cartilage are worn by Jin to represent his general enmity towards authority and his openness to boding with people of all sorts of clans and countries.

Jin has an average build for his height and appears somewhat lanky. His body is built for speed and endurance rather than strength. He utilizes a classic Nara thinking pose while concentrated. The pose involves holding the hands upright in a prayer like state with the palms pressed together except the left hand has the fingers curled in making a fist. The hands are held in this position whether the arms are pointed upward or are held down, either may be used. In battle, the closed left hand may be holding a weapon such as a kunai or poison-laced needles at the ready during the thinking pose to allow quick action. The hands are asymmetric deliberately and represents the dual nature of wise decision making; the closed left fist represents intuition and emotion while the upward right hand represents logic and intellect.

Personality:

Jin is an unassuming person. He prefers to blend in in a crowd rather than stand out and, if you aren’t especially observant, you might not even notice he was there. If you point this out to Jin or fail to notice him, however, he feels insulted. Jin doesn’t want to live life unnoticed, but rather—having grown up in the solitude of the Nara Clan forest—is accustomed to life that is quiet and calm. Jin insists he isn’t shy despite coming off that way to others, because he is never anxious in crowds and is always quietly attentive. Very little goes on without him knowing. Jin is also accused of having no sense of humor, for he seldom laughs in front of others, but when he makes a joke, it never fails to bring others to laughter.

Jin takes after his father Shinjiro in that he values fairness and justice above all other values. A highly moral thinker, Jin prefers to think hard about actions before committing to them. This makes him obsessive to a stubborn degree that can get on other people’s nerves who prefer to act quickly or impulsively.

Because of his sense of morality and the loss of his father, Jin has become a very loyal young man. Once he makes a promise to a close friend, or even to a stranger, he will not allow that promise to be broken. Deep inside of him, of course, each promise he breaks reminds him of his father’s broken promise and failure to return home.

Despite his tendency to intellectualize and his logic mindedness, Jin is actually a highly emotional person. Although you will not often see him acting from his emotions first, he is highly aware of their presence inside of him and goes to great lengths to hide them from others. While younger, Jin was more free with his emotions, as many young children are. But since his father's death, Jin has become much more closed off with his emotions. This has become especially true as he has experienced more and more pressure from his clan to repress the I'll feelings towards his dad.  He, at the same time, strives towards the Nara clan’s stereotypical dispassionate logic, and resents his or any clan’s insistence on repressing feelings. When the bottling up fails, Jin can outburst in sadness or anger. This often surprises the people around Jin,  for who they typically know as the quiet boy in the back of the scene bursts forth in offense to some injustice or in intense sadness and sensitivity.

Relationships

Nara Shinjirō (father, deceased): Jin’s father, shinjirou, was a formal but loving shinobi. He died honorably fighting in Konohagakure’s failed resistance to the Empire in 2109. Jin, who was 8 years old at the time, was on somewhat bad terms with his father at the time. Shinjirou was known as the most stubborn member of the family and they had been fighting about Jin’s entrance into the academy the last time they had seen each other. Jin and his mother did not know the true nature of Shinjirou’s mission until his comrades returned, as they had been sent as spies to the Empire. He sacrificed himself in battle in order to save his teammates and ensure their return home. Using the Nara clan’s famous kageshibari no jutsu, Shinjirou held a large group of Kumo-nin in place after luring them into a building nearing collapse from the wear of battle. He held the shinobi in place and, using a final burst of chakra, brought the building down on top of them. Jin, of course, is proud of his father’s honorable end—but he hides the anger he feels at his father for failing to return home.

While still alive, Shinjirou was a quiet man with a great sense of fortitude. Once Shinjirou made a decision about something, he scarcely allowed any other path to be taken. While intelligent to an intimidating degree, Shinjirou tended to act first from his values, and second from logic. In this way, he often gave the impression of thinking from wisdom rather than pragmatism. His dedication to his clan and his country were unwavering and, to Jin’s unending frustration, oftentimes came before family. Shinjirou never allowed Jin to be angry about his father’s absences, instead expressing that his love for Jin was shown through his protection of the clan. Although Jin never questioned his father’s love and dedication, even despite his quiet nature, he has harbored resentment at his father which has only grown in depth and intensity since his passing in battle.

Nara Chinami (mother, alive): Chinami, consistent with her warm and loving nature, affectionately calls Jin “Jini.” Having had to raise Jin mostly by herself (and entirely by herself after the death of her husband), Chinami is overworked and constantly exhausted. Even so, she refused to let anyone see her out of stamina, and the warmth she is able to express in the few minutes each morning reverberates throughout the day and night. But do not mistake Chinami as passive, for the dull embers of her natural warmth ignite to a torrential flame at any signs of danger to her clan or her son. In fact, it is from his mother’s quiet fierceness that Jin gets his loyal, protective nature.

After the death of her husband, things changed for Chinami just as they did for Jin. Even though she knew it would be a time Jin needed her most, unfortunately she was forced to work even longer and harder. While she had already been a deer herder who specialized in the safe extraction of the deer’s medicinal antlers—no small or unexciting task—she took an additional job as a secretary in the Nara clan estate embassy in Konohagakure no Sato.

Hyuuga Yugi (older brother figure, alive): Hyuuga Yugi is a Hyuuga/Konoha representative who was sent by Hokage Hyuuga Yatako after the fall of the Empire in order to build relations with the Nara clan. Not much older than Jin, Yugi weathered the storm of the NCIA and the Konoha resistance with strength and grace. Jin was asked by the Nara elders to take Yugi through the remaining resistance encampment in the Nara Clan forest as a part of his visit. Upon seeing his level-headedness in a location that brought Jin fear and resentment, Jin began to look very highly upon Yugi and began calling him Yugi-senpai. Jin looked forward greatly to the visits Yugi made to the Nara Clan. He began to look up to Yugi in a way he had not of someone sense his father died. Though Yugi may not know, he is responsible for helping to reignite Jin’s love for Konohagakure and Hi no Kuni.

Aburame Soji (friend/teammate): Soji, like Jin, was one of those kids always at the back of the class. Except while for Jin it was his unassuming nature that left him excluded, for Soji it was the other kids' fear of his poisonous bugs. Jin was never scared of Soji though, he was smart enough to recognize that if they were careful he wouldn't be harmed. Jin also knew what it was like to be teased by the other academy students, since he was so tall and lanky as a kid, so Jin had a soft spot for the ones like him and Soji. And as it turns out, the two boys had many common interests, both having spent much of their childhood secluded in the Konoha forests. They spent many days after the invasion calmed exploring the forests together. Jin with his eyes up and out, watching the deer run and the falcons sweep across the horizon, Soji with his eyes on the ground looking for some obscure kind of insect. Often sparring and practicing jutsu together while students, Jin and Soji will likely make good teammates in the future.

Yamanaka Fu (friend/teammate): Fu has brought Jin out of his shell a bit as they've gotten to know each other. By far the most brash and impulsive of their team, Fu has taught Jin how to have enough confidence to think on his feet.

History

Jin enjoyed a happy childhood, growing up with loving parents and the support of his clan. As an only child, Jin both longed for someone to spend his time with and learned to enjoy solitude. While young, Jin loved to explore the Nara clan forests and he showed a natural affinity for the deer who protect the forest’s secrets. When they had the time, Jin’s parents used to take him out to the Nara forest to watch the deer graze and to teach him how to harvest the antlers. From this he learned how to control the Yin energy within him which would eventually be used to make the classic Nara kagemane. Jin learned from this a love for the deer and the forest and he developed a longing to discover what other natural havens exist outside in the world. While loving the oasis of the Nara Clan forest, Jin ached to travel to other cities, other countries, and to discover other habitats and environments. If the Nara harbor such peace and beauty in their home, what other natural sanctuaries could other clans out there be hiding? Jin made it his goal to find out. But for now, as a young child, Jin’s explorations would go no further than the forests edge with his parents. A small three-person team of their own, they affectionately called themselves “Shin-Jin-Chin” and Jin felt safe, protected, and happy.

Still at the same time, life in the Nara clan was not as perfectly idyllic as their little family made it seem. Shinjiro, having been just old enough to remember Cenarus’s infamous summoning of Koudaikou the great deer, has strong feelings about the clan’s recent controversies. Jin had been brought up to prefer the old ways of the clan, in line with his father (who himself was attached to even the pre-Shikamaru days of the Nara), but to be outwardly supportive of the uniting of the clan’s two ways. This caused tension even within Jin’s family. Chinami, Jin’s mother, had always been a fervent supporter of the current clan head, Nara Hiei. The conflict was always minor at worst however, and Jin was lucky enough to be born into a time of peace an unification within in the Nara clan.

But peace within did not—could not—beget peace without. When Jin was a mere 6 years old, Konoha and much of the world over were overtaken by the Kumogakure Imperial forces and subjected to the tyrannical reign of the NCIA. As a clan, the Nara were in conflict about how to manage the crisis. For the first time in his life, Jin saw not only the carnage of battle, but signs of division within his clan. The Nara could not come to agreement about how best to handle the increasing NCIA presence. Should they retreat further into isolation to protect their clan and It’s sacred forest? Or should they increase their presence in Konoha to assist in the growing resistance? During the increasingly turbulent times, Jin’s family tried its best to maintain some semblance of normalcy. Shin and Chin tried to take Jin into their forest trips as much as possible. Shin began to prepare Jin for life in the Ninja Academy, although Jin resisted. He was becoming scared by the NCIA and wanted to stay in the safety of the forest. But Shinjirou insisted and, while more understanding of Jin’s fear, Chinami agreed. The night after what would (unbeknownst to Jin and his mother) become one final argument, Shinjirou left to be a spy assisting in Konoha failed first freedom attempt. Jin never saw his father again. No only this, but he saw his sacred forest invaded as resistance Fighters disbursed by the failed freedom attempt in Konoha looked for places of sanctuary. Jin had lost his father and the sanctity of to him what was the most important location in the world.

Jin then had to adapt to life after the dual traumas of surviving the NCIA and losing his father. The result if this was that Jin became highly questioning and critical of authority. This extended naturally after the fall of the Empire for many, but it was Shinjirou’s death that had the larger impact on Jin; how can you trust someone to have authority and power if they could end up failing you? All of this occurred at a time in which Jin was beginning at the Academy. Though he did not want to attend the academy in Konoha, still harboring feelings of anger towards for its failed resistance that led to his father’s death and the occupation of his clans forest, Jin held back his anger and went. He felt guilty that his last interaction with his father was an argument about the academy, and so he went begrudgingly in order to honor his father’s final wishes. He ended up loving the education, and appreciating the time it took him away from the Nara forest which was still full of foreign resistance shinobi at the time. Jin took to a study of ninjutsu, Shinobi history, and foreign locations. He finally got to learn about other countries, other climates, and made his plans for where he would one day travel. Gradually the pain of his father’s death faded, the safety and solitude of the Nara Clan forest was restored as resistance Shinobi returned to their homes, and Jin’s life with his mother regained some stability.

Jin graduated the academy without issue and was excited to become a Genin. Though he is not sure what his immediate future holds, he knows he can’t wait to become strong and smart enough to travel the Shinobi world as he always wanted. He hopes to make enough money as a Shinobi to relieve the burden on his mother so she never has to work again. Inspired by the great Nara Arashi, Jin wants to use the wisdom gained in travel to become an advisor to the hokage, specializing in Gaikoku relations. Driven strongly by his goals, Jin came out of the academy with few acquaintances and even fewer friends. He is focused and motivated, but his mother worries that he is becoming increasingly isolated and lonely. Constantly on the move but not in one place or with one person for too long, Jin seems to be avoiding attaching himself to anything strongly as he once did to his sacred forest and his family life. Will Jin find what he is looking for in his goals, in some distant land? Or will he forgive his father, his clan, and himself for losing the things he held so dear?

Description: The invention of the series of jutsu known by the more common version, Kage Nui, were a work in progress for some time. First the control was very simple, and extended only to creating a single "thread” of shadow, sharpened to a razor sharp point. The shadow was mentally launched across a battlefield. These shadow threads could extend almost three times as far as a normal shadow, and the incredible razor point of the technique could easily rip through defensive barriers, walls, and even armor that would hold most other jutsu at bay.

Kage Zashi No Jutsu | Shadow Stabbing Technique | 影刺しの術

Spoiler

Type: Ninjutsu [ Void | Hijutsu; Nara ]
Rank: Genin
Cost: 70 Chakra
Damage: 50
Effect: This technique may performed while the user is under the effects of the technique 'Kagemane No Jutsu'. This technique has a +20% chance to deal Critical damage to its target.
Description: The ability of the Nara clan to manipulate their own shadows is not an easy skill to master. Many young Nara struggle with just moving their shadow along flat surfaces, let alone moving their shadow in three dimensions. As a method of practice, the Shadow Stabbing Technique was devised. The jutsu is performed by utilizing chakra to create tendrils of shadow that shoot out toward a target. Less experienced users can often create only a single tendril, while masters of the Nara shadow arts are able to create many. Regardless of the number of shadowy needles, all are very sharp and when accurately aimed can be deadly.

Cost: 50 Chakra
Damage: 0

Effect: Applies “stunned” for one turn.
Description: While maintaining a snake hand seal, the shinobi begins to gather chakra into their hands.  Kūton: Chakura no Keishō | Void Release: Chakra Glyph | 空遁・チャクラの形象

Spoiler

Type: Ninjutsu [ Void ]
Rank: Genin
Cost: 40 Chakra
Damage: 10
Effect: Area of Effect Jutsu. Causes 10 damage and does not affect allies.
Description: Originally invented in order to assist in the making of ritualistic magic circles by burning marks into the ground with chakra, Shinobi developed this technique to spread damage over the wide area of a battlefield. After making snake followed by boar hand seals, the shinobi gathers a large mass of chakra into their hands. They then shove their palms into the ground, spreading their chakra over the battlefield in a large, circular glyph. This causes damage over a wide area and burns a pattern into the ground. The pattern of the glyph is dependent on the Shinobi’s preference, but allows them to target enemies and avoid allies.
Cost: 2 JP

The shinobi forms hand seals and gathers chakra into a shape resembling a three-pointed shuriken in their hand. This void-energy projectile has its chakra concentrated into its points, imbuing it with a dull bluish hue that stays together as the shinobi shoots it out over the enemy. The points of chakra then individually rain down around the enemy and quickly compress, gaining density until they burst in an explosion of distracting blue light energy is saved until the final burst, which also causes damage.

General Jutsu

Spoiler

Shunshin No Jutsu | Body Flicker Technique | 瞬身の術 I

Spoiler

Type: Ninjutsu [Void]
Rank: Genin
Cost: 50 Chakra
Effect: This technique may be performed in the Response Phase or the Setup Phase;

Response: This technique may be performed in the Response Phase as a Free Action. The user of this technique increases their Evasion statistic by +50 during the turn that this technique is used. (Dodge rolls made during this turn must mention this technique.) This technique has a 5x% chance to fail, with 'x' being equivalent to the number of unresolved attacks targeting the user. This technique may be performed 2 times per battle in the Response Phase.
Setup: The user of this technique increases their Accuracy statistic by +50 during the turn that this technique is used. The user of this technique may not perform another technique in the Setup Phase for 2 turns. This technique may be performed 2 times per battle in the Setup Phase.
Role Play Effect: The user of this technique may reduce the required post-length when Traveling by 10% when performing this technique outside of battle.
Description: One of the basic techniques taught to most students during their time at the academy. The Body Flicker Technique is considered an extremely versatile ability, and is one of the most widely used general shinobi skills. The jutsu itself is a high-speed movement ability that uses chakra to temporarily vitalize the body, allowing movement that is nearly untraceable to the naked eye. The user often disappears from the field of their opponent’s vision in a puff of smoke, as a means to further distract their path of escape. Though Shunshin has many applications, its most common use is in evading hazardous attacks.
Points: 9

Body Replacement Technique | Kawarimi no Jutsu

Spoiler

Type: Ninjutsu

Cost: x Chakra

Effect: This technique may be performed as a Free Action in the Response Phase following a failed dodge roll. When determining the cost of this technique ‘x’ is equivalent to the cost of 1 basic attack or small weapon attack that the user failed to dodge. The damage and effects of that basic attack or small weapon attack are negated. The user may take no action in the Setup Phase or Main Phase on the turn this technique is used. This technique has a 5% chance to fail. This technique may be performed 1 time per battle.

Description: A life-saving technique for most young shinobi, the Body Replacement Jutsu has been a staple in academy learning for many years. By utilizing their ability to manipulate chakra, with quick movement, a skillful shinobi is capable of switching their position with another object to evade damage. By creating a simple optical illusion, the user of the Kawarimi no Jutsu can make it appear as though they were damaged or even killed by the opponent’s attack. Some ninja become extremely adept in the usage of this technique, and have even been known to swap places with hazardous materials to trap their enemies.

Clone Technique | Bunshin no Jutsu II

Spoiler

Type: Ninjutsu [Void | Evolving; Bunshin No Jutsu I]
Rank: Genin
Cost: 5x Chakra
Effect: This technique may be used in the Setup Phase or Main Phase. When determining the cost of this technique ‘x’ is considered to be the number of ‘Clones’ created by the user and may never be greater than 4. ‘Clones’ have 1 Health and 1% of the user’s other statistics. ‘Clones’ are not physical, and may not use items, techniques or attack during their turn. The user of this technique gains +20 Evasion or +20 Accuracy for every ‘Clone’ on the battlefield. The effects of 'Clones' may be ignored by any character with heightened senses (i.e; Byakugan, Path of the Sensor, Inuzuka Smell Tracker, etc). This technique may be used in the Setup Phase 1 time per battle.
Description: A technique that most students are required to be proficient in before they can graduate from the academy, the Bunshin no Jutsu is the most basic of the myriad of clone techniques that exist in the world. By properly molding their chakra, the user is capable of creating near perfect replicas of themselves. Unlike most bunshinjutsu, the basic clone technique does not produce physical clones but creates something more akin to a projected image, which is a real image that has no form. The Clone Technique is considered an E-Ranked jutsu, and is not very powerful, but with practice and ingenuity many shinobi have come to use it in masterful ways. Most often stalling by hiding out among their clones, or setting themselves up for a strong offensive.
Points: ⁿ/ₐ [Evolving 2; Clone Technique I]

Transformation Technique | Henge no Jutsu

Spoiler

Type: Ninjutsu
Rank: Academy Student
Cost: 10 Chakra

'Visibility Score' reduction caused by this technique may be ignored by any character with heightened senses (i.e; Byakugan, Path of the Sensor, Inuzuka Smell Tracker, etc).
Description: The Transformation Technique is a time-honored staple of nearly every shinobi academy the world over. Its concept and execution are both extremely basic, making it a perfect training technique for young students. By molding chakra around their body, the user of the Transformation Jutsu is able to temporarily take on the physical characteristics of another person. Though the Henge no Jutsu rarely offers a perfect disguise, clever ninja have been using it for hundreds of years to confound their foes.

First off, your sheet looks great. For a first time sheet this is far above what we expect of brand new people. Aesthetics make approving more enjoyable, so thank you. Your personality and background also show a skill in writing, which will also make you a great fit for our game so I'm glad to see it already exists rather than something that will need to grow over time! Everything that is not mechanically on this sheet looks great! Very well done.

• You have 490 total stats on your sheet, you need to add 10 somewhere.
• Your terrain bonus skills that you chose still need the training requirements fulfilled. Your Path of the Scout gives them for free and at half training requirements (1000 words instead of 2000 words), but you still need to do that training. So you have two ways you can go about this. You can either 1.) choose to remove them for now and gain them as you complete training, or 2.) keep them on your sheet but put a [LOCKED] label near their name that indicates that you may not gain the bonuses from these skills until you complete the training requirement. Either is fine, I tend to prefer the version in which you remove them and learn them later, but thats my personal preference.

Have to agree with Cntr, this sheet is insanely good for a first time submission. I read through a lot of it just for the joy of it and because the aesthetics drew me in. I saw a few small things that could be corrected that are all minor so feel free to take with a grain of salt or disregard:

  • Physical description: First paragraph ends mid sentence at “represent”
  • Likes: Inconsistent capitalization for each item (I may bullet them in someway too just for presentation)
  • Personality: Third paragraph, sentence that begins “But after his father’s death” needs revision. I would split into two sentences. The sentence beginning “This often leads to people around Jin to become surprised”, I would consider revising as well.
  • Relationships: Under Nara Shinjiro, second paragraph. “He dedication to his clan” should be His

That is as far as I took notes. The only reason I even bring them up is because the whole sheet is so good that I thought you may want to fix the small things :)

Thank you both for the kind words and comments!

Cntrstrk, I appreciate the clarification about the terrain bonuses from path of the scout. I thought getting it all for free upfront seemed a bit op... For now I'll mark them as locked until training is completed.

Atlas, I appreciate your notes! You were right to assume that I care about the small things, and I'm glad you could tell that from my writing! I was exhausted from working on it all day, I didn't go back and do a copy/edit read through, so your work is actually a big help.

Thanks everyone, I'll work on the updates!

Update: All the above comments have been addressed!
