D Rank Mission: Cipher Translation

N31HtTM.gif

Hello everyone! With the recent efforts to brush up our massive inventory of Main Site techniques we've decided to open up a new D Rank Mission! A number of our Main Site technique have valid english names, but they don't have a cool romanji counterpart! So we're opening up the floor for members and staff (not me) to jump in and help with the efforts to polish our game and really give it a finished feel. Hopefully this turns out to be fun!

Cipher Translation

A ninja's life is highlighted by the memorable combats and the lives that they save. However, some of the most important and overlooked roles that ninja fulfill is daily life is that of information trafficking. Correspondence are sent to and from hidden villages every day in a variety of forms. There is good work to be done in the field of decoding and encoding classified messages, and the Kage are always looking for those that are sharp of mind in their ranks to help out from time to time.

Requirement: Provide one (1) romanji translation for a Main Site technique that does not already have a romanji translation. Provided romanji must be accompanied by information that explains how you came to the translation as to prove that it is correct. A single character may only complete this mission 10 times.

Reward: 50 EXP and $25

Official Ranking: D

How do you go about completing this mission? Great question! I've included a list of helpful information below that will get you on your way. Once you have finished a romanji, you simply need to post it in this thread following the format below. Cntrstrk14 will post approvals in this thread when he adds the romanji to the Main Site. If multiple people provide a translation for the same technique the best one will be given credit, with the one that was posted first being favored. Once approved you can add the completed mission to your character sheet, linking to this post in your logs.

How do I begin?

Excellent question! To start you will need to go to the Main Site and find some techniques that you want to translate. Start your journey at this link [ http://ninja-academy-online.com/techs/ ]. You will see right away from the list of jutsu names that many do not have romanji! You can tell if a technique has a romanji right in the name itself! (Earth Release; Inner Decapitation Skill | Doton; Shinjuu Zanshu no Jutsu) The blue part in this technique is the english name and the red part is the romanji. So this technique already has a romanji! You want to look for jutsu that are just english names with no secondary japanese name.

Resources & Tips

Some of our members have experience (academic and self taught) with the japanese language. Two of them have been kind enough to share some of their knowledge with you! Check out these helpful links.

• Tools For Puzzling Out Japanese! — Cellar Door

• [Guide] Making 'Ninja Magic' — Rhap Sodos

• Translating Names in Manga is a Strange Thing — Rhap Sodos

Aside useful guides, here is a list of tips in no particular order that I've personally learned over the years to help you out!

• Always, always, always read the romanji you find out loud to yourself before posting it. You will be surprised how often translation sites will give you a romanji that is just an english word with a Japanese accent. "Toripuru" is just "Triple" much to the Uchiha's bane for 10 years on Ninja Academy. You can find these on the Main Site, but any that are submitted here will be denied and no reward given. Don't be the person who submits "Touch and Go | Tachi Kyou Go".

• You can be a bit liberal with your word choice. For instance, if your english name is "Rib Splitter" you might end up finding Japanese words for chest, rib cage, or other near words that are not exact but end up working better. This is okay, translation (especially of names) is not a precise art. Don't be afraid to stray a bit as long as you could translate your romanji back to english and be somewhere in the right ballpark.

• If the name is longer or is a string of words, brush up on sentence structuring of Japanese. It is not too difficult to puzzle things out, but don't just slam words next to each other and call it a day.

• If you are translating something with a 'Release' at the front, try and use ones already used on the website or an official translation if you can find one.

English Name: Bulldozer

Romanji Name: Burudōzā

Explanation: Looked all over an actual kanji translation, but these were invented pretty recently in regards to Japanese as a language. It’s going to have to be a katakana name.

Explanation: Google translated and cross-referenced with canon stuff to make it sound legit. It’s Clash + Horn.

Explanation: Google translate. If you were to translate literally it would be Impact Plate.

Character Rewarded: Uzumaki Kazuto

Character Rewarded: Uzumaki Kazuto

English Name: Earth Release; Stone Goliath

Explanation: Ishi is stone. Goliath is a Christian word with no kanji. So its katakana is Goriate

Romanji Name: Kirigakure-Ryū; Hoshokusha Shibari No Jutsu

Character Rewarded: Hozuki Zangetsu

English Name: Sea Sickness

Romanji Name: Fune-Yoi

Explanation: Google Translate pitched this one to me, and it seemed to be the only kanji related to being sea-sick, so I just went with it.

Character Rewarded: Hozuki Zangetsu

English Name: Water Release; Arctic Wind

Romanji Name: Suiton; Hoppōfū

Explanation: And here we have Water Release; Northern Wind. I personally think this would sound better with a “No Jutsu” at the end, but who am I to judge?

Character Rewarded: Hozuki Zangetsu

English Name: Water Release; Tidal Burst

Romanji Name: Suiton; Shioha

Explanation: This is more closely translated to Tidal Breaker/Tidal Wave, but it gets the point across.

Romanji Name: Suiton; Zetsubō No Uzu

Explanation: Weirdly, I just knew this one.

English Name: Sound Release; Echoes of Reason

Had to do a few fixes, specifically for Sound Release = Onton as well as Brown Note being off from what the actual translation is based on context. That said I just docked a bit of EXP for making me do some work.

English Name: Ball Lightning

Romanji Name: Tama Kaminari

Explanation: Simple translations for ‘ball’ and ‘lightning’ but Tama in this case can also mean shot or bullet, which I think fits the flavour.

Character Rewarded: Nakayama Madoka

English Name: Blossoming Flow

Romanji Name: Hana Ryūdō

Explanation: Literally ‘Flower/Blossom Flow’. Ryūdō has been used in other media with an undertone of ‘transferance’, which seems to git the genjutsu’s description.

Character Rewarded: Nakayama Madoka

English Name: Cloud Arc Strike

Romanji Name: Enkei no Kumo Kōgeki

Explanation: Enkei means ‘Circular’, and I used it mostly because whenever I went looking for ‘Arc’ I found architecture arcs and mathematical arcs. Apart from that it’s a direct translation.

Character Rewarded: Nakayama Madoka

Explanation: Direct translation, tested back and forth.

Character Rewarded: Nakayama Madoka

NA English Name: Feathery Sleep (incorrect name, corrected here)

English Name: Stinger and Single Claw

Romanji Name: Sasu Oyobi Tsume

Explanation: Comes out literally to being “Sting and Nails” as far as I can tell, but this is an awkward name for a technique even before translating it. I’d suggest changing this to “Sasori Rendan(Scorpion Combo)”.

Character Rewarded: Aragane Shun

English Name: Sandstorm Volley

Romanji Name: Sunaarashi-dan

Explanation: Sandstorm is just “Sunaarashi” which… is literally sand and storm mashed together. I don’t think Japan has standstorms, so they don’t have an unique word for it. Rather than “volley”, I’ve decided to go with “-dan” here, as -dan is like “bullet”. So this would be like “Sandstorm Bullet”, which is a more popular attack naming convention.

Character Rewarded: Aragane Shun

English Name: Sand Slide

Romanji Name: Sabaku Shōhen

Explanation: Translated “Sand Slide” as “Desert Crumbling”. Sounded cooler than “Sand Slide” in my head.

Character Rewarded: Aragane Shun

English Name: Sand Release; Changing Sands

Romanji Name: Santon: Suna Henka

Explanation: “Sand Release: Sand Change” is what it is literally. This is awkward because “Sand Release” isn’t a thing-- it’s technically all magnet release. But Sand and Magnet are different here because we didn’t know back then!

Character Rewarded: Aragane Shun

English Name: Sand Release: Sand Erupt

Romanji Name: Santon: Suna Funka

Explanation: “Sand Release: Sand Eruption”

Character Rewarded: Aragane Shun

English Name: Sand Release: Sand Tornado

Romanji Name: Santon: Suna Tatsumaki

Explanation: Literal translation.

Character Rewarded: Aragane Shun

English Name: Aerial Thunder Combo

Romanji Name: Sora Shōgeki Rendan

Explanation: “Sky Crash Combo” was what I was shooting for.

Character Rewarded: Aragane Shun

English Name: Dance of the Vines

Romanji Name: Tsuta no Mai

Explanation: “Dance of the Ivy”, since “Ivy” and “Vine” are roughly the same.

Character Rewarded: Aragane Shun

English Name: Direct Sonic

Romanji Name: Shūchū-on

Explanation: “Concentrated Sound” literal translation.

Character Rewarded: Aragane Shun

English Name: Earth Release: Minor Tremor

Romanji Name: Doton: Bimyōna Shinsen

Explanation: “Earth Release: Subtle Tremor” literal translation.

Character Rewarded: Aragane Shun

Romanji Name: Katon: Kasai o Kabā

Explanation: Literal translation.

Character Rewarded: Otsutsuki Kuzume

Romanji Name: Katon: Yoku Hi

Explanation: “Fire Release: Bathing Fire”

Character Rewarded: Otsutuski Kuzume

Romanji Name: Katon: Bakuchikuken

Explanation: Literal translation.

Character Rewarded: Otsutsuki Kuzume

English Name: High Rise Tidal

Romanji Name: Michishio

Explanation: “High Tide” literal translation.

Character Rewarded: Otsutsuki Kuzume

English Name: Induced Cardiac Arrest

Romanji Name: Nise Josaidōki

Explanation: “False Defibrillator”

Character Rewarded: Otsutsuki Kuzume

English Name: Invisible Lightning

Romanji Name: Mei Raiko

Explanation: “Dark Lightning” literal translation.

Character Rewarded: Otsutsuki Kuzume

English Name: Lurking Beasts

Romanji Name: Tōkamono

Explanation: “Hidden Beast” literal translation.

Character Rewarded: Otsutsuki Kuzume

English Name: Mimosa

Romanji Name: Ojigisō

Explanation: 含羞草 is the kanji for a Mimosa/touch-me-not and is pronounced Ojigiso from what I can see.

Character Rewarded: Otsutsuki Kuzume

English Name: Ox’s Spear

Romanji Name: Ushiyari

Explanation: Literal translation… also “Boiling Spear”.

Character Rewarded: Otsutsuki Kuzume

English Name: Ore Combo

Romanji Name: Ore Rendan

Explanation: Don’t know what “Ore” is supposed to mean here, but I suggest just changing the name to something like “Oni Gekido”//”Oni’s Wrath”.

Explanation: I figured this was named Kusa Release on purpose, so I preserved the Kusa in the romaji. Shizen = nature and Toushi = fighter or "champion of"
Character Rewarded: Nara Jin
