Terrick Sukrai Posted November 1, 2008 Posted November 1, 2008 (edited) Always keep in mind what it means to be samurai! Never lie! Never deceive! Observe the true purpose of the samurai code with dedication! Talking too much with comrades is uncivil. Keep the mouth shut and adhere to the old customs! Upon meeting those who do not know nise, leave immediately once your business is over. Never stay and linger! Everything that relates to the samurai principles comes first. Being a loyal and dutiful son makes the best nise, never swerve from these aforecited precepts! If by any chance, these precepts are not observed, one cannot call onself nise! You will be forgotten by Marici the War God and forsaken by the Great Bodhisattva of Hachiman, and your fortune in war will turn black! Skill Name: Nise Education Bloodline: Shimazu clan only Description: The nise educational system of the Shimazu clan was an interesting one... to put it politely. It meant unswerving duty and loyalty, resolve and dedication to what was perceived to be the ultimate expression of samurai conduct, but in truth it too had its flaws. Held too rigidly, it could mean that the person would be unable to interact with others socially, resulting in a sort of retardedness in behaviour as well as very skewed ideas as to how others thought. Held too loosely however, and you wound up with an arrogant prick who thought he was part of some social clique that made him better than the others. The Satsuma samurai found both of these to be unfavorable outcomes and so taught their children these precepts and their meanings from their most tender years, allowing the children to learn how to interact with each other without overstepping the bounds but also without isolating them completely, as children are terribly social and cannot stand being by themselves for long. To date, noone who has gone through the nise education has ever rebelled against their rulers or has been swayed by the temptations of other nations. And the Shimazu clan aim to keep it this way... Effect: The skill Tactics: Ambush is prohibited, as is mercantile conduct (Killing only for money). Also prohibited is killing without the permission of a superior, regardless of circumstances, except in the fulfillment of duty or in defense of oneself and one's immediate home and family. Also prohibited are the skills Poison Creator, Path of the Assassin, Poison Master, Expert Poison Creator, Poison Handler, Poison Handling Master, Path of the Puppeteer, and Puppet control. Cost: +1 skill points Edited November 13, 2008 by Terrick Sukrai
Eechi-go Posted November 1, 2008 Posted November 1, 2008 This would mean that this character could not preform B-Rank missions or higher, more often then not, since MANY of them require you to kill targets for a certain sum of cash. I mean, there are alot of negatives to this, I'd give you 2 SP to 3 SP at the least.
Terrick Sukrai Posted November 1, 2008 Author Posted November 1, 2008 (edited) If it were blatant private assassination maybe... but for other things? Perhaps not... and there are other types of missions to go on after all. Still, since this would be a mandatory skill for the Shimazu... Are you sure? Besides, Samurai don't do assassination, they are Honorable! They might take bodyguard jobs for clients with known bounties on their heads or are known to have assassins coming after them... that would be a B-rank at least... Eechi-go Posted November 1, 2008 Posted November 1, 2008 I'm not saying you couldn't do B-rank missions, just that alot have to do with killing targets, ESPECIALLY in the A and S rank missions. But of course, this all relies on logic, so no real worries, you could just get alternative missions.
Terrick Sukrai Posted November 2, 2008 Author Posted November 2, 2008 Alright then... And that makes this the last mandatory skill I can give the Shimazu clan... Poverty already gives them +2, so this maxes what characters can get, thank you!
Warr Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 +1 at most. Those are -optional- abilities, so going 'lolol I can't take them' shouldn't give that much of a bonus. Only being able to kill without the permission of their superior isn't much of a big thing, and the only thing this really does is prevent from people doing B ranks and above, and even that can be got around.
Rei Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 In truth, you're only preventing a character from taking optional abilities suited to the shinobi lifestyle (or general hindrances). This shouldn't cost grant more than 1 point. As for Eechi's statement, he could easily neutralize (not kill) a target. Or peruse espionage, diplomacy/goodwill or protection, the other fixtures of the B/A mission.
Warr Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 How would Pervert/Feeble Minded/Frail, Damage prone, or Poor Stamina manipulation, psychological and natural traits? Those are traits a Nise Education, and a code of conduct, would not make you not have, perhaps hide, but not not have. Pervert Samurai existed, even in Japanese lore.
Terrick Sukrai Posted November 13, 2008 Author Posted November 13, 2008 Granted... guess I got carried away. Usually though those ones would be thrown out of the school
Warr Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 If caught. And would not the Nise Education be much stronger if it taught it's students with such hindrances to resist those urges, and to strive to become strong and overcome their weakness?
Terrick Sukrai Posted November 13, 2008 Author Posted November 13, 2008 *shrugs* At which point it would remove them entirely, right? Ah well, it's been changed. Can I get an approval?
Warr Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 You really don't need the 'prohibited' skills in the skills effect, just include a thing about what the Nise Education teaches or something. *shrugs* At which point it would remove them entirely, right? Ah well, it's been changed. Can I get an approval? Not necessarily. To struggle to overcome and struggle to resist and actually doing it are different things.
Terrick Sukrai Posted November 13, 2008 Author Posted November 13, 2008 True enough. Alright, I removed the skills you mentioned, but I'm keeping the others, as to learn such 'unforgivable' skills like poisons and assassination and such would, at least amongst the Shimazu, earn a death penalty since it could only be used for dishonorable means.
