The last injured soldier was released from the med-bay in the morning, which acted as a catalyst to begin the Ethereal Device's use. The rest of the men and women would visit the memorial to pay their respects to the fallen while The Volunteer would equip their new psi-armor and prepare for their ascendance.

.:OPERATION AVENGER (Part 1):.

The Entrance; We were able to fly into the ship with relative ease, which was rather strange. They didn't hit us with any turrets or attack us upon entry. It was almost as though they just let us in.

March

Voices; Upon entry, The Volunteer begin to hear strange voices in his head that began to call out to him. These voices reached no one else, and they sounded alien in nature.

Recon

Revelations; The voice continued to speak, painting a picture as to why this invasion had to happen. Humanity was being tested for some reason. The aliens desired to take a species that was not only capable of psionic powers, but also incredible martial powers. Every other alien we had fought up until this point was a failure in the eyes of their leader, and this ship would act as our test to see if we could accomplish whatever it is they wanted us for.

We took our fair share of beatings

But we came prepared

We used every trick we had up our sleeves

And we had plenty of close calls

(Some closer than others)

And despite the injuries we continued to fight a conglomeration of all the foes we had fought since

With a little help from the weapons and armor of the fallen

Even going so far as to use our enemies against one another

But then we made it to the final room...

Where the king of all Ethereals dwelled.

.:OPERATION AVENGER (Part 2):.

Destruction of the Ranks; The Ethereal King wasted no time completely destroying any strategy we had set up when we entered the room. Using his mind-control abilities, he quickly wormed his way into PMM's mind and forced him to fight for the aliens. Wolfnin was out of medpacks at this point, leaving us completely at the mercy of the aliens.

The Royal Guard; A King is nothing without his court, and this one proved that he too had his own servants. Spawning a group of ethereals and elite mutons out of nowhere, it all looked rather hopeless until The Volunteer unleashed the power of the Ethereal Device...the Rift

The Team Opens Fire; Not to be outdone, and refusing to let the aliens simply take PMM, the rest of the team opens fire together against the mutons and ethereals. Though many attacks got through, they weren't able to down any of them. Not only that, the last shot by Azure was reflected back at him, dealing some crippling damage.

Sensing Weakness; The Ethereals picked up on Azure's suffering, and wasted no time retaliating with a psionic blast of their own that would hit him so hard that he'd fall unconscious and begin bleeding out. With PMM being mind-controlled, things began looking bad.

Two For One; The Mutons began to join in on the beat-down, aiming for Leon now that Azure had dropped and left him wide open. Though he too only fell unconscious, the situation was quickly going south now that half the team was either on the ground or mind-controlled.

CD the Rocketeer; Deciding to try and even the odds, CD pulls out his famous rocket launcher and decides to aim at the motherfuckers down below, hitting them so hard that one of the Mutons actually went flying through the air.

Smoked; Unable to fire on PMM, Wolfnin instead throws down a smoke grenade in an attempt to hide the team from the attackers. This action, however, left him open to PMM, who was forced to attack him due to the King still remaining in complete control.

The Will of the Ethereals; Despite being empowered by the Ethereal Device, The Volunteer was still unable to breach the mind of the enemy in an attempt to turn him against his king. Things just continued to look bleaker and bleaker.

The Standoff; With the Ethereals beginning to retreat, they decided to cover their tracks by sending PMM barreling down at the team. Instinctively raising his gun, The Volunteer stood against PMM in a showdown as he ran forward, threatening the man with a buckshot to the brain if he continued to approach. Luckily enough, the smoke grenade began to dissipate at this exact moment, causing him to miss his shot. The sound and flash of the gun in front of his face was enough to snap PMM out of his mind control...but it was too late.

The Sadistic Choice; PMM's mind-control went on for far too long, and despite having two more medpacks on him, both Azure and Leon only had a single turn left to survive before they both bled out. With the Ethereals hiding behind the fog of war, the team was forced to quickly decide who to revive and who to let die. Though the decision was absolutely heartbreaking, the team needed covering fire from the top of the room as they pursued the Ethereal King. With solemn hands, PMM picked Leon back up and began to heal him, leaving Azure to die a woeful death. PMM would take this incredibly hard, immediately breaking down and beginning to panic.

Gaining Ground; After losing yet another soldier to the damned aliens, the team pushed forward, attempting to corner the aliens as they moved into better cover, all the while Leon would begin to scale the catwalks to prepare for a kill shot, refusing to let Azure's sacrifice be in vain.

Moving in for the Kill; With Leon in position, Wolfnin charged the King's opposite flank in an attempt to get close to his bodyguard. In order to cover him, The Volunteer would form another psionic rift at their location, while CD would provide covering fire.

Will the team survive? FIND OUT IN PART 3! (Because this part took way too much time to put together as is!)

.:OPERATION AVENGER (FINALE):.

The Plan Falls Apart;   Seeing our plan before we were able to pull it off, the Ethereal King caught a glimpse of Leon sneaking on the catwalks. Dooming him to the same fate as PMM and Major, the King extended his mind forcibly into Leon's, putting him in the same unfortunate position that Major was many months prior. The team had to move in order to end this as soon as possible.

Movin' At The Speed of Death; Using a good deal of stealth, Wolfnin managed to quickly rush the bodyguard to make it easier to get to the King. Thankfully he caught the thing completely off-guard and was able to take him out with a swift plasma bolt to the skull.

Nothing Can Go Wrong; Rushing the Ethereal King now that he was vulnerable and unguarded, The Volunteer risked his life by going toe to toe with the psionic beast. Raising his shotgun and cocking it in preparation to the the war in one final attack, he pulled the trigger and blasted a decisive bolt of plasma directly at the creature's mask...

Everything Has Gone Wrong; ...yet even while cornered and outgunned, the Ethereal King managed to catch the shotgun blast point-blank with his psionics and send them careening back at The Volunteer, injuring him further.

The Shit Keeps On Coming; Not wasting it's chance to snuff us out, the Ethereal King assumed direct control of Leon's mind. From his sniper's perch, the poor bastard was able to fire at everyone from behind. He took sights on Wolfnin, reared his sniper back, and shot a hyper-accurate plasma bolt directly at the the man's head, landing a perfectly clean headshot. Yet despite taking a completely unguarded shot to the head, Wolfnin only fell unconscious from the shot, showing how tough as nails he truly was.

Rocking the Double Tap; Being as skilled as his mentor, Major, Leon was able to pull off a second sniper shot immediately after the first. Thankfully, the shot was sloppy, and it just narrowly missed The Volunteer's head at the last second.

Wrath of True Psionics; With The Volunteer right where he wanted him, the King Ethereal unleashed an immense torrent of psionic energies directly at him. The blast hit him dead on, sending him reeling in pain and leaving him with very little health at all. As the psionic energy crackled around him, it became painfully apparent that if this battle didn't end right here and now, this war was going to end, and so was the earth.

Sacrificial Distraction; Knowing that another shot at the Ethereal King would merely be reflected without a proper distraction, and without any ammo left in their guns, CD and PMM hunkered down and lobbed a plasma grenade at the monster. Just as predicted, the King reflected the grenade back at the two and engulfing them in a terrible explosion, but leaving it wide open to an assault from The Volunteer.

Checkmate; Not willing to waste CD and PMM's sacrifice, The Volunteer quickly readied his weapon and unloaded a powerful plasma bolt into the creature's face, searing straight through it's helmet and causing the creature to explode. It looked as though the war was over, after many, many months...

Long Way To Go; The death of the Ethereal King would trigger something in the Ethereal Device that it possessed. Apparently the device was not only controlling the entire ship, but it was connected to the King's life support. With its death, strange power fluctuations would begin to appear around the ship....

The Great Escape; After re-grouping, the team would notice the energy from the device growing more and more unstable. It looked like the ship was going to blow at any second, and they'd need to high-tail it out of there if they didn't want to get blown to bits.  Yet on the way out, The Volunteer was stopped rather suddenly, suffering from an onslaught of migraines.

Here At The End Of All Things; The Ethereal Device began to show The Volunteer visions yet again, but this time their intentions were clear. The mothership wasn't just going to explode, it was behaving like a dying star and would collapse in on itself to create a black hole. With such close proximity to the earth, all things would be sucked into the black hole and lost forever. If this came to pass, it didn't matter how triumphant their victory was, the team would have damned all of mankind. With such limited options, The Volunteer had to make a choice.

I Go Alone; The team would quickly catch wind of something going terribly wrong, stopping in their tracks as they made a beeline for the exit. Though they would not leave without him, The Volunteer understood what had to be done, forcing them through the door with a psionic wave and closing it behind them so they were forced to escape.

Just A Little More Time;  Approaching the device cautiously, the Volunteer would attempt to interact with it the same way he had in the Gallop Chamber before the mission began. Gaining control of the ship with the device, it became clear that he could not stop the ship from exploding, but at the very least he could hold it off until the team managed to make it off.

To Pierce The Heavens; Using all the psionic mastery he had attained thus far, The Volunteer began to lift the entire mothership up away from the earth, up, up, up until it escaped the atmosphere. Finally, now that it was safely away from any human life, The Volunteer let the the Ethereal Device explode, using his psionics to contain the black hole so only he was left to suffer that fate.

JANUARY 1ST, 2016

Though the world would never truly understand the sacrifices made to ensure it's longevity, they would undoubtedly enjoy the sight of shooting stars filling the sky as their freedom was reclaimed from the hands of these alien invaders. For those who knew the truth, this victory could ring hollow while knowing that there was still something lingering out there in the darkest reaches of space that made this invasion a necessity in the eyes of the aliens. For now, Earth could rest easy knowing that, although they had lost too many brave heroes in this war, they still had many more prepared to watch over them when the time came.

.:One Year and Three Months Later:.

A great deal of time has passed since the battle on the alien mothership.

The Volunteer sacrificed himself to prevent the Earth's collapse into a black hole upon the ship's destruction, but he was not the only victim. Half of the boarding party was killed, if not maimed terribly during the final firefight. Even those who survived without catastrophic damage to their bodies would be kept awake at night by the haunting memories of being forced to turn against their squad-mates. Indeed, the boarding party would never be the same again.

KC inherited the title of 'Commander' upon the Volunteer's death, with Pandamattmatt acting as his second in command. However, the sacrificial grenade used to assist in the death of the Ethereal King took it's toll on the Commander's body, tearing it apart and damaging his muscles to the point where he could no longer wield his plasma caster. Of the six that went in, only PMM and Leon were capable of doing fieldwork for a good long while. Both KC and Wolfnin were forced to spend most of their days in medical tanks, recovering from their grievous wounds.

The rest of the squad continued to fight the alien menace, as the destruction of the mothership did little to slow down the forces that were already terrorizing earth. Though the XCOM squad managed to rack up a good deal of kills, the world governments grew suspicious and paranoid about the level of technology the team possessed. They feared that their exceedingly advanced technology would threaten the rest of the Earth once the invasion finally ended. The team relinquish their advanced weapons and armor to put the governments at ease, as the XCOM project continued to fight the alien invasion with a significantly lower edge against their opponents.

Though XCOM had given up their tech, they were not completely defenseless. The destruction of the mothership resulted in a great deal of alien material crashing into earth. This material had been jettisoned all across the world, actively being harvested by the team in hopes of figuring out uses for it. This 'material' was actually mechanical cells that were capable of allowing machine and flesh to live in a symbiotic relationship...possibly even granting life after it had been snuffed out.

The first subject to undergo the tests was KC. They were a great success. Now the Commander could finally lead his men.

They said it couldn't be done.

They said it would be an abomination under the guise of life. But some heroes deserve a second chance.

Enter Tony, the Iron Man.

Yet he would not be the only one to be brought back from the grave. In order of their deaths, the XCOM project began treating the broken bodies of the soldiers lost in the past. After infusing the deadened legs with the mysterious 'Meld' substance, Megan would be brought back to life by the regenerative properties given to her. As the old recovered corpses began gestating in their tubes, the team began to finally get back together again in order to retaliate against the remaining alien menace.

Chapter 2 Begins.

One by one the crew would be put back together.

Both Azure and Major would have undergone enough reconstructive surgery to breathe life into their once deceased bodies. Even Wolfnin himself wasn't too far behind, though the damage to his brain from Leon's bolt to the skull resulted in more careful surgery being required. Though the Volunteer's body could never be required, the rest of the team would be able to thrive thanks to his sacrifice. The XCOM team even managed to garner enough support to begin recruiting new members, such as 1Q.

But something was amiss.

Though XCOM had their superior weapons and armor confiscated, their improved numbers and morale should have been laying waste to the remaining pockets of alien resistance. And yet despite the dozens of missions with zero casualties, not only were more and more aliens cropping up out of the woodwork, but some were beginning to appear that the team had never even seen before in their lives. Was this war truly getting any better?

Was the Volunteer's sacrifice in vain?

Yet, suddenly, there was a single voice over the XCOM HQ intercom, and the main screen quickly changed,

"Commander."

.:THe EXALT War:.

EXALT struck almost instantaneously.

As soon as the Council cut out, XCOM lost almost half it's funds from the opposing organization, as if they knew exactly when and where to hit them. Thankfully they left behind a trail- one that could be tracked back to South Africa. Enter Rei, our specially picked agent who would be sent deep behind enemy lines to gather information on them. If we were lucky, we'd be able to find their main base of operations and end this war as soon as it began.

After about a month or so of running covert operations within the EXALT cell, Rei would send a signal back to XCOM HQ to let them know that he had recovered the necessary intel and needed an evac immediately.

And so the cavalry had arrived.

Sadly, by the time they had arrived, EXALT had picked up on the evacuation attempt, setting up tech to scramble the intel that Rei had managed to obtain. They had started to attack Rei's lone hacking signal, but Azure was having none of their shit. None of it.

In the meantime, Rei was attempting to maneuver through the field to reach his computer, but more and more EXALT were popping out of the wood work, making the team's job infinitely harder. Though their appearances were difficult to make out in the heat of battle, they all seemed to wear bandannas that covered their faces, and their eyes were pure black. They too had been experimenting with the alien tech, it seemed.

EXALT began attempting to ambush the snipers, but KC was thankfully perceptive enough to nip that shit in the bud rather quickly. This moment of weakness almost lead to the capture of Rei's laptop, but thankfully Major was looking out for everyone from afar. A lone EXALT soldier climbed up the side of the building, and quickly realized the horrible mistake he had just made. Rei wouldn't slack either, quickly putting down anyone who flanked the wrong side of the laptop with his trust pistol. With Leon also keeping an eye out from the side, every EXALT soldier was doomed to walk into a surgical (but not very clean) killzone.

Tony decided it would be fun to play hide-and-seek with a lone EXALT soldier who was likely pissing his pants at the sight of his squad getting butchered. Tapping him on the shoulder with a giant, metal digit, the EXALT soldier's face lost all color as Tony proceeded to punch straight through a wall, sending the poor bastard flying through a couple of bricks.

"Dammit!" He exclaimed, shoving a cigar in his mouth in anger. "Just a couple feet more!"

Attempting to use Tony's distraction as his chance to move, a single EXALT soldier ran towards the laptop to grab it as fast as he could, but Rei managed to put down some covering fire to ensure that he wouldn't get close enough to do so. This, of course, resulted in Tony following the sound of gunfire with his giant, metal fist primed, flying in the direction of the poor soldier and delivering a blow that would hit him so hard that he'd bounce off the nearby wall.

Mission Successful! (And achievement unlocked.)

Intel gathered thus far-

EXALT's HQ is not in North America.

.:Radio Silence:.

Despite the advancements made against EXALT, both France and Mexico were entirely unpleased with how XCOM was dealing with the two-pronged assault by the alien and human menace. Both countries dropped out from the XCOM project at the same time, leaving the team's triumphant victory against EXALT a bit hollow. However, upon closer inspection, it looked as though there was EXALT presence discovered in France after overlooking the data that Rei had recovered from South Africa.  Due to Rei literally just getting a chance to rest, Major was sent in to do recon in his place.

A couple of days would pass, but aside from a few alien skirmishes, the days would be relatively uneventful....until an alien in a fucking mech showed up. Due to him being the cowboy that he is, Tony decided that there wasn't enough room on this planet for the both of them. So he proceeded to beat the ever living shit out of him. Yet even after going all out, Tony was able to fell the giant brute...until Rhapsody swooped in and lolololololkillsteal.

With the alien mech in pieces, the team would recover it's broken body, and after long hours of studying the alien advances, a new breakthrough would be made.

Tony would ascend to his highest form- Colonel Tony, the Iron Tiger.

.:On The Trail:.

Due to the location of the EXALT operation, the XCOM squad had a great deal of difficulty landing in the swarmed country. Thanks to this, Major would be on his outted early and on his own for the first part of the operation. Alone, hunted, and outgunned, Major would manuver his way through the streets to the best of his abilities, trying to shut down a couple of EXALT radars to make it easier for the team to find his location. With the doors locked and with no other way in, Major was forced to break through the nearby window to reach one of the radars, signaling his pursuers to his location.

As the EXALT squad began to surround him, Major did everything he could to hold the line down as they marched at him. Armed with only a pistol, Major's last stand was seemingly coming to an end when the team finally managed to land.

Needless to say they got fucked up.

As the last EXALT soldier attempted to crawl away in order to escape, Rhapsody approached him with an attempt to stun him and bring him back to the base for information. Suddenly, the soldier pulled out a syringe and stabbed himself in the neck, killing himself immediately.

Apparently EXALT has some secrets that they weren't willing to just give away.

.:Bathed In Fire:.

EXALT would not go silently into the night.

As soon as the team returned home from their successful mission, another EXALT operation was detected in Northern Africa. Not giving Rei a chance to rest, the spy was sent out to disrupt operations almost immediately, resulting in a few days of complete radio silence. On the very last day of the week, the XCOM base received a covert message from Rei- EXALT had raided the government warehouse with all of XCOM's old confiscated weaponry and armor, but above all, they had found Cloudnine who was placed in stasis due to her psionic nature.

Knowing that they could not allow the weapons or Cloudnine to fall into enemy hands, XCOM deployed the squad yet again, this time to an EXALT werehouse that they had smuggled the old XCOM tech to. The team would land with a newly rebuilt Wolfnin at their side, adrenaline pumping as they prepared to make a lethal strike against EXALT to recover what they had lost.

EXALT knew they were coming, however.

Tony lead a small squad to raid the inside of the warehouse, while Megan and Major set up a killzone around the evac zone to protect their escape route until Rei was able to hack the scanners to find Cloudnine's stasis chamber. Thankfully it wouldn't take him long to find it, being the expert that he was. That said, Cloudnine had been in stasis for over a year, and was stumbling around in an attempt to get to her feet. As Rei began escorting her back to the evac zone, the two would find that they were being followed, with one of the EXALT soldiers beginning to unload a hail of bullets into the girl.

Cloudnine panicked from her confused and weakened state, attempting respond with a poorly aimed stream of bullets at her attacker, but her accuracy was off. The scream of pain into the com signaled a sudden wave of reinforcements on EXALT's part, pinning down XCOM as the squad attempted to tear through the swarm to free up Rei and Cloudnine's path.

Still, Rei knew that the girl could not hold out against another assault, so he desperately attempted to off their attacker with the only thing he was armed with- a pistol. He managed to catch the soldier out of cover, but the damage was not enough to stop the coming assault. Picking the rocket launcher up off his back, the soldier aimed down his sights and let loose a wild rocket that narrowly burned past Rei's coat, slamming into Cloudnine and engulfing both XCOM soldiers in a fiery blaze that doused both soldiers and detonated the tank behind the girl. She didn't stand a chance.

With an enraged roar, Rei would move to cover and fire down his pistol, offing Cloudnine's killer with blood dripping from just about every pore. By the time Megan reached the two, it was clear that the girl was already lost. Doing her best to heal up Rei, she'd encourage him to run back to the evac zone while he still had a chance to escape. They couldn't lose him too.

In one last act of defiance, the XCOM squad began destroying everything in the warehouse that they couldn't recover, not allowing EXALT to gain anything from this 'victory'.

.:Close Calls:.

Things weren't getting any easier at XCOM

Due to EXALT managing to raid the warehouses to begin with, India, France, and Australia all abandoned the XCOM project, leaving the team with a whopping five countries that had abandoned them. But there was one bright spot to all of this- they were beginning to piece together where EXALT's base was. All they'd need to do is narrow their intel down by two suspected countries and they'd be able to raid the EXALT base and end this final alien rebellion once and for all. And so their next mission lead them to Mexico, which had been swarmed by the alien menace.

With the team beginning to grow, XCOM decided to promote Megan to a Commander as well, for her impressive mastery of the battlefield, her solid kill count, and ability to maneuver enemy-controlled territories without suffering so much as a scratch. The team would need such leadership, as they'd enter the battlefield just as Rei was about to be swarmed by those who outted him.

The team assured him that they would be there shortly, but Rei's voice could be heard calling out over the channel- "Watch out! They have laser weaponsAnd gene mods! Repeat! They have laser- BZZZZZT"

The team split up, with PMM, Wolfnin, and Leon breaking through the glass windows on one side of the building to act as a distraction, while Megan, Tony, and KC moved into position to save Rei on the other side. Tony acted as a tank and soaked up the damage of the EXALT soldiers, taking severe damage in the process to buy Megan some time to get to Rei's body, narrowly dodging a few sniper blasts as she did so. Thankfully the distraction team was able to provide covering fire that ensured Megan was safe as she revived Rei. The spy would spring back to life, helping the fire team keep the approaching soldiers at bay until the intel was successfully downloaded and the team GTFO'd.

One more piece of intel to go.
